[Bug 1054282] Re: No obvious way to restrict shopping suggestions from displaying adult products

2012-10-02 Thread Gary Mellor
This is the final nail in Ubuntu's coffin for me. I've been using Ubuntu
since Karmic. I think since Unity came in things have got worse. This is
a great shame. It seems with this 'solution' that no online lens
searches will be possible. How does this fit with Linux being about
choice? Why not have this lens as a PPA (or Synaptic package) so that if
users want the ads and so forth they 'opt in' and pull it down. Some
internet searches are useful but I'll aver the vast majority of Ubuntu's
core users do not want 'sell-out' ads appearing on their desktop. Whilst
I'm sure it's true that users could download the source and remove this
feature if they wished, this is not something that the vast majority of
hobbyists or newbie's will be able to do easily. It seems to me that
Cananical and Ubuntu are fast becoming Linux's equivalent of Microsoft
and Windows: starting to restrict choice and foist what it thinks is
best upon the community. It's sad but I have now switched distros. I'm
now running Linux Mint Debian 64-bit. If you look at Distro Watch Mint
has had the higher page hit ranking for quite some time. Linux Mint
allows me to keep my productivity up while Ubuntu seems to hinder me now
more than when I first started using Karmic and was getting to know this
OS. A newbie coming to Ubuntu now has to figure out how to use the Unity
metaphor and HUD further complicates things in my opinion. Lenses are
not pretty or functional for me - they simply get in the way. I
sincerely hope Ubuntu changes the way it does things and if they fail to
do so then I hope the community votes with their feet and abandon it and
get another distro on their machines. Ubuntu has dropped the ball and
lost its way. It is interesting that in the latest edition of Ubuntu
User their was some feedback on Unity - there wasn't much positive about
it. Come on Ubuntu, please start listening to the community. To say this
isn't going to be fixed is nothing short of disgraceful and I hope this
is a dealbreaker for the community. Ubuntu: you ARE going to lose user
base over this 'feature' - it is ill-thought out and disrespectful to
your users and community to say it won't be fixed. How much more Apple
/MS-like can you get - you are treating your users with contempt. I will
*not* be installing Ubuntu ever again - even in VBox.

[Bug 873495] Re: LightDM fails to start after nvidia-current or nvidia-current-updates are installed (upstart job issue)

2012-07-16 Thread Gary Mellor
I no longer have this issue as a result of some system modifications. I
changed my laptop disk arrangement so that I have two SSDs configured as
RAID0. This has had the sum effect of slightly slowing down boot time
from my previous configuration of just the one SSD. I do not use the
proprietary NVIDIA driver on my system (NVIDIA GeForce G210M ) and I did
a complete reinstall of 12.04. Obviously I'm not saying this is
somethnig everyone should do - I needed this particularly setup and as a
knock-on effect it stopped the low graphics mode error occurring. I am
adding this result here as it *might* indicate something useful to
someone in the know. I suspect my resolution here is as a direct result
of the boot time slow down which would corroborate with the OP's
supposition that this is a race condition.

[Bug 1012796] [NEW] lo-menubar installation causes problems when using File Exit in LibreOffice Calc

2012-06-13 Thread Gary Mellor
Public bug reported:

[SECTION #1]

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Release:12.04

[SECTION #2]

apt-cache policy lo-menubar
lo-menubar:
  Installed: 0.1.0-0ubuntu4
  Candidate: 0.1.0-0ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 0.1.0-0ubuntu4 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

[SECTION #3]

Steps to reproduce are as follows:

1. Open LibreOffice Calc
2. File Exit
3. Open LibreOffice Calc again. You will now see a dialog appear as per my
attachment 'err_01.png' stating that Untitled 1 is not recovered yet
4. As an aside, if LibreOffice Calc is locked to the Launcher it can, when 3
(above) has occurred, it can refuse to re-open (i.e. hang) when clicked. This
is intermittent.
5. In order to stop this occuring:
a. Click 'Start Recovery' in the dialog
b. When it has completed click 'Finish'
c. When LibreOffice Calc opens the recovered document click the close window
(red X) icon
d. Open LibreOffice Calc again and it opens correctly without trying to recover
documents
6. This same behaviour is exhibited if you open an existing file and repeat
steps 2 and 3 except that in step 3 instead of referencing Untitled 1 it will
reference the title of your document

By clicking File Exit I expected LibreOffice Calc to cleanly exit and
not try and recover the document(s) again when I reopen the application.

[SECTION #4]

It appears as though LibreOffice Calc is not exiting cleanly under File
Exit actions. Only by clicking the red X (window close icon) is a
clean exit seemingly achieved. This behaviour is only exhibited when lo-
menubar is installed. At all other times File Exit behaves as I
describe I would expect in SECTION #3, above.

[OTHER]

I have attached the output from SysInfo ('SysInfo.txt')in case there is
anything in this that may be of further help.

Interestingly, I completely reinstalled 11.10 earlier today and then
did the upgrade to 12.04 again and I saw the low graphics mode problem
straight away whereas before this was not a problem.

[Bug 912381] Re: Error ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode directly after installation

2012-05-11 Thread Gary Mellor
As a quick workaround, you could exit the low graphics mode notification
by selecting 'OK' and then selecting one of the options followed by 'OK'
(or just by pressing ESC). Then, login via the command line then enter:

sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm restart

This will then restart the desktop environment. Not ideal, but it will
suffice for me until a fix is made available. Interestingly, I
completely reinstalled 11.10 and then did the upgrade to 12.04 again and
I saw the low graphics mode problem straight away whereas before this
was not a problem.

[Bug 929139] Re: Cannot restore backup from NAS using Deja Dup

2012-02-10 Thread Gary Mellor
Hi Wouter,

Thanks for this. What would you suggest as the more specific program?

Also, I'm unsure as to whether trying to restore an entire filesystem
would cause issues while on the actual machine - surely the kernel
files/drivers etc would get over-written as the machine was doing the
restore. Would this cause it to become 'broke' as a result of such
critical files getting written at the same time as they were in use?

You'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge in this area only I've never
needed to backup/restore before and it was something I felt I should
learn more about. Perhaps this scenario is why I saw the lockup of the
machine last night - is this down to me misunderstanding the process and
what is involved? Perhaps the keyboard and touchpad became unresponsive
as the driver files were being restored? I've no idea.

THank you again.

Regards

Gary.

[Bug 929139] Re: Cannot restore backup from NAS using Deja Dup

2012-02-09 Thread Gary Mellor
Thanks for the workaround Wouter. I had to modify it slightly to:

sudo mount -t cifs //NAS/Backup /mnt/NAS/ -o user=your-uid,passwd=your-
password,uid=1000

This was because:

[a] mount.cifs was not recognised, and;
[b] I couldn't get control of the /mnt/NAS/ directory so had to tell it who I
was (uid=1000)

While this allowed me to get beyond my original issue (and I did see the
restore start to take place) I kept getting another issue when it was
attempting to restore .ko files. I tried 4 times to do the restore and
each time it failed at a .ko file. The first three times it was at the
same .ko file. The fourth time it was another (I don't remember the
exact names and for reasons that will become apparent in a moment I was
unable to get any screenshots).

When the problem occurred the machine 'locked up'; the keyboard stopped
working as did the touchpad and touchpad buttons. Then the num-lock and
scroll-lock lights flashed continuosly. Unsure of what was going on I
left the laptop in this state for over 15 minutes/20 minutes/25 minutes
and finally half and hour. It never recovered on any attempt and no
further restore progress was made. On each occassion I was forced to
power the machine off (not something I like doing but the machine was
completely unresponsive due to the lack of keyboard/mouse controll). I
couldn't even break out of X. On the fourth such power off the machine
was left in a corrupted state and would no longer boot (I am unsure if
this is as a direct result of removing the power or because of a partial
restore). The machine got past BIOS and then I had a black screen with
the num-lock and scroll-lock lights flashing on and off again.

I am now in the process of rebuilding that particular laptop. As I
mentioned in my earlier post, the machine in question is a experimental
machine for trying things out that I wouldn't like to do on my main
machine. To this end it has served its purpose well. Given the issues
with Deja Dup I won't be using it as my backup program.

I am very sorry I cannot provide you with more details about the .ko
files it stopped at but due to the time involved in rebuilding the
machine I won't be able to repeat the exercise.

Perhaps Deja Dup is good at restoring some folders and files but not the
entire filesystem - perhaps that is why I have had this experience?

Regards

Gary.

[Bug 929139] [NEW] Cannot restore backup from NAS using Deja Dup

2012-02-08 Thread Gary Mellor
Public bug reported:

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
ISSUE
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I successfully backed my entire machine (/) up to an external NAS drive
(Western Digital 500GB MyBook). However, when I came to test the restore
I keep getting the same message: Restore Failed: Connection failed,
please check your password: Failed to mount Windows Share. This seems
strange since I was able to write the backup to the NAS drive. I backed
up over wifi and I am trying to restore via wifi.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
STEPS
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

In the settings of Deja Dup, in the 'Storage' section, I have the
following:

Backup location: Windows Share
Server: my_server_network_name
Folder: my_backup_folder
Username: my_username
Domain: WORKGROUP

I have triple checked these entries for schoolboy errors like typos and
all is correct. One thing I did note is that I am not asked for the
password to accompany the username.

So, I select the 'Restore' option from the 'Overview' section and a
small 'Restore' dialog appears. The details here are exactly as I
entered them. I also make sure at this point that the NAS share is *not*
mounted. I then click 'Forward'. At this point the share is mounted - I
can see it in the file explorer - it also correctly identifies the one
and only backup made in the 'Date' drop down list box. I click 'Forward'
again. In the 'Restore to where?' section I leave all at the defaults
('Restore to original file locations') and click 'Forward'. The
'Summary' screen shows. I then click 'Restore'. At this point I get a
'Preparing' progress bar. Expanding the details section shows nothing.
My screen then goes black an I am asked to enter my administrator
password ince Deja Dup will be modifying my system. I do this and then I
get the error as mentioned: Restore Failed: Connection failed, please
check your password: Failed to mount Windows Share - the share is
already mounted at this point though so I am totally confused. I have
tried specifying the NAS by network name and IP and manually mounting it
and it results in the same error message each time. I was expecting it
to restore the backup I just took. I will admit that the wording of the
error message would indicate an error on my part but since the NAS share
is mounted at the point I indicated earlier it seems somewhat
misleading.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ BEGIN DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

This issue is intermittent. When logging in from LightDM login screen I
sometimes do not see the correct desktop icons. I see what look like
icons of blank sheets of paper. They never get corrected. At the same
time, and again this does not always occur, the icons in the top panel
default to looking similar to those used in Karmic. In order to correct
this I have to logout and back in. When I do this everything loads as
normal: desktop icons and top panel icons. The icons I currently have on

[Bug 772207] Re: version 173.14.30 is buggy for GeForce FX 5200

2011-05-01 Thread Gary Mellor
As per other posters I see the comment No proprietary drivers are in
use on this system. Later in the 'Additional Drivers' dialog it states:
This driver is activated but not currently in use. I don't see the
version it recommends, it simply says: NVIDIA accelerated graphics
driver (version current) [Recommended]. I have an NVIDIA GeForce G210M
on board. If I opt to remove the driver and reboot, when I next go to
the Additional Drivers dialog it shows me I can activate the driver.
When I do so and reboot it tells me the same message No proprietary
drivers are in use on this system. Like an earlier poster I also have
the NVIDIA X-Server Setting app installed out of the box. This is all
occurring on 11.04.

[Bug 209019] Re: Fetching album cover art does not work

2011-02-17 Thread Gary Mellor
I have this problem on Maverick 64-bit. I have Rhythmbox 0.13.1 and the
plugin for artwork ('Cover art' checkbox in the 'Configure Plugins'
dialog) is enabled. I have an active Internet connection. I haven't
checked to see what happens if I play from a library but certainly
running music directly through the ODD doesn't pickup album artwork. I
had Red Hot Chilli Peppers' 'Stadium Arcadium' playing for over an hour
and in all that time it never found the artwork. If it was an obscure
album I would be more forgiving. The same behaviour was also exhibited
for Nirvana's 'In Utero' - over an hour of playback and no artwork
displayed. My machine spec, if this is a factor, is as follows:

Lenovo G550 2958 (laptop) | X64 | Mobile Intel GM45 Express | NVIDIA
GeForce G105M | 128GB Crucial RealSSD C300 | Intel Core 2 Extreme
Processor (X9100) | Crucial 8GB SODIMM DDR3 | Intel PRO/Wireless 5100
AGN [Shiloh].

[Bug 209019] Re: Fetching album cover art does not work

2011-02-17 Thread Gary Mellor
Further to my post just (sorry for posting again, I couldn't find any
edit function), I tried to get a debug output for Rhythmbox. In the
Terminal I ran the following:

rhythmbox -d ~/rhythm_debug_out.txt

However, despite seeing a lot of activity in the Terminal window the
debug file contents seem surprisingly sparse. I tried doing this twice
with the same result. Anyway, my test was simply to put Nirvana's
'Nevermind' CD into my ODD and see what happened. I let it run for three
minutes on the track called 'Polly' and it never found any album
artwork. This happened both times I ran the test. The activity icon was
ticking round, indicating that it was doing something, it just never
found the album cover. I've attached the log anyway; I hope it helps. If
I need to do something else to get a more verbose output then please let
me know.

[Bug 434564] Re: [cups-driverd] Bad driver information file /usr/share/cups/drv/sample.drv!

2010-06-30 Thread Gary Mellor
I eventually solved this by switching the printer to a wired connection
rather than wireless. Prints fine now. Switching back to wireless causes
the same issue again. Wired and wireless printer connections both work
in 32-bit Lucid. By wired connection I mean a wired connection to my
router not to the computer itself. I still connect my computer
wirelessly to my router.

[Bug 434564] Re: [cups-driverd] Bad driver information file /usr/share/cups/drv/sample.drv!

2010-05-07 Thread Gary Mellor
Same issue in 64-bit Lucid (10.04) using HP Photosmart c7180. Printer
simply sits there with job on the queue but never processes them.
Printer reports that is is 'Idle'. After 10 minutes of inactivity I am
forced to cancel the job. No such problem using the same printer on
32-bit Lucid (10.04).
