[Bug 158321] Re: Synaptic needs to inhibit GPM from sleeping while downloading/installing packages
Can I get no one to write a patch for this? I've submitted this bug to the debian bugtracker and to the synaptic mailing list. Radio silence. Is synaptic no longer under active development? Where the hell are its developers hiding? It's bugs like this and http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=334806 which make power mgt on linux look right stupid. Is no one interested in fixing this? It's a spec, is there something up with specs? Like the clipboard spec which no one adheres to? [Bug 299395] [NEW] rhythmbox doesn't go directly to track-listing when autostarted by inserting an audio cd
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox When you insert an audio cd, the auto-run dialog comes up asking if I want to open it with Rhythmbox as default. Clicking OK, opens Rhythmbox, but the default display is on my Library, and not on the Audio CD. Ideally, Rhythmbox should open on the Audio CD pane, displaying the cd's track-listings. [Bug 299395] Re: rhythmbox doesn't go directly to track-listing when autostarted by inserting an audio cd
Actually, I've just realized that this bug is within Ubuntu, and not rhythmbox itself. Running 'rhythmbox file:///dev/scd0' starts up rhythmbox with the selected pane on the Audio CD as expected. This means that the issue isn't with rhythmbox, but with the way Ubuntu auto-runs the cd. This is easily fixable by running a manual command, entering the rhythmbox command above and setting that as the default action when a cd is inserted. However, this should be fixed by default within Ubuntu itself. -- rhythmbox doesn't go directly to track-listing when autostarted by inserting an audio cd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/299395 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 183746] Re: [Hardy] doesn't recognize native resolution on Vaio PCG-SRX51P/B (i815m)
Wow, so I tried _everything_ and nothing worked except one thing (probably the most obvious too). I tried installing the latest xserver-xorg-video-intel as described above, I tried installing 915resolution from hardy's packages, I tried installing xserver-xorg-video-i810, I tried manually setting the intel driver in my xorg.conf and nada, stuck on 800x600 every time. Take into consideration though, that I'm installing Intrepid from a fully working Feisty install, and after reading the following post (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-general-1/xorg.conf-for- intel-82815-chipset-608658/), I tried just copying the xorg.conf from my old install's backup over my existing xorg.conf and voila.. it worked like a charm. I just needed to change the Driver section to be 'intel' instead of 'i810' which it used to be and everything started working brilliantly (even the little scroll-wheel on the touch-pad which really does it for me :O). I'm attaching my xorg.conf if anyone wants to grab it and drop it into their /etc/X11/ directory to get things working. [Bug 174712] Re: Unable to logout, shutdown, restart, etc when Mythfrontend is running
Well, I even emailed mythtv-users and the best workaround I managed to come up with was the following: Since you can change a setting in the mythtv options to disable prompting on exit, when you click shutdown/reboot, it just quits mythtv without asking (but doesn't shutdown/reboot the computer). If you place mythtv in a wrapper script which shuts down the computer once mythfrontend returns, it solves the shutdown problem. So, something like this: -- mythtv.sh #!/bin/sh mythfrontend sudo /sbin/poweroff -- You will need to add /sbin/poweroff to your sudoers file to give your user permissions to poweroff the computer. Add something like this: ALL ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /sbin/poweroff But check https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sudoers for more info, since it's better if you limit it to a specific user. [Bug 21202] Re: firefox doesn't work with gtk clipboard management
It's funny how freedesktop expect everyone to adhere to a standard that neither no other OS has implemented, and then no one adhere's to it, and thus the feature doesn't actually work like it should do because one community expects the ownus to be on everyone else, copy/pasting has become a bit of a joke. I mean this is pretty standard stuff, the end-user, my mother, brother and sister don't care whether evolution, thunderbird, pidgin, virtualbox, gnucash, sunbird, GIMP, and OpenOffice aren't adhering to the standard, they expect copy/paste to work. I realize that it's not about the majority here, if so, Microsoft's implementaion of HTML should be officially standardized for everyone to use, but about each community to have the right to say 'I will not implement that in that way'. However, I do feel that it is Ubuntu's responsibility to make the desktop experience seamless for the user. Until the bugs have been reported and solved in all the aforementioned applications, I feel it would be a very reasonable solution for Ubuntu to come with a clipboard manager by default, and tolerate the performance loss until things are implemented properly. Glipper doesn't cut it to be honest. You have to manually access the clipboard history (which is one-click, admittedly ) in order to retrieve the lost contents. However, either a patch to glipper so that it compensates for this bug is needed, or another manager which does the task properly. -- firefox doesn't work with gtk clipboard management https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/21202 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 49890] Re: USB drive not detected if booted with drive connected
I've actually managed to solve this one by doing something completely different. I've got a black WD Passport drive formatted as ntfs which uses a small 10cm USB cable. Whenever I'd boot up with the drive plugged in with this cable, it would be detected on boot only half the time. If I used a longer cable, it wouldn't ever be automounted on boot, but would show up in /dev, and I would have to manually mount. I then bought a Lindy dual-power USB cable (http://www.lindy.co.uk/usb- cable-dual-power-2-x-type-a-to-mini-b-usb-2-1m/31780.html) and that's fixed the problem completely. It ALWAYS automounts when I boot-up. Since the WD Passport drives use the USB connection to power the drive, and it is known that if your USB ports don't provide enough power, the drive won't work properly. In my case, if I plugged the drive into my other add-on PCI USB card, the drive wouldn't even spin-up. This is on Gutsy with the vanilla install kernel. The question would be, could this phenomena be related to this bug? How many of the other reporter's drives are powered through the usb cable? [Bug 118138] Re: When playing music, amarok doesn't prevent the computer to enter sleep (suspend mode)
I've found that a couple of other media players also perform the same behaviour. It happens with VLC, Songbird and Totem Movie Player (which is Ubuntu's default movie player, but not Rhythmbox). Bugs will have to be reported for each media player, however, it seems unintuitive that Gnome's sleep mechanism doesn't check to see if any audio is currently playing before hibernating. I realize that when an app is running it needs to inform gnome that it shouldn't suspend and let gnome know when it can, however, it seems more intuitive to inform gnome on occasions that it should suspend while audio is playing and leave the default as not to suspend when audio is being played. [Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
Installing glipper or parcellite by default is not a fix, if we did that, then we wouldn't have solved the problem that the specification itself was designed to solve. And the real reason this bug is not a papercut because it is not trivial. If it was trivial then someone would have fixed it already. Every bug comes down to a cost-benefit balance. If the cost of fixing it is more than just living with it for every person, IT DOESN'T GET DONE. A lot of you are asking stupid questions.. "why isnt it fixed, blah blah blah, whine whine". Well it's simple, in the same way that the cost of you learning how to program, studying the spec and implementing a fix isn't worth your time (or money), then for exactly the same reason no other dev has done it either. Until someone has the necessary experience, time, or motivation to fix this, it will just sit waiting. The occasional reminder on the bug report is fine, but please, the best thing you can do is start learning to code and maybe a few years down the line you'll be able to write the patch yourself if it's so important to you. -- MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/11334 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Since the package Maintainer of vino is listed as the 'Ubuntu Development Team', isn't it logical that they be notified of this bug? This is quite a serious usability issue and a number of people have now taken the time to diagnose and investigate it. I'm certain that whoever packaged it would appreciate being notified. How do we go about notifying the appropriate individual? Is it NOT the Ubuntu Development team? Was the package sync'd from Debian testing during development perhaps? Look it's open-source. It's an open-source development model. That's how it works. I didn't even read his post cuz he's just ranting. This is not the place to rant. If ranting actually got any results, then I would be ranting myself. The reason I use Ubuntu is because despite the (admittedly) really shitty bus like this one, I still prefer it to Windows and Mac OS X is too expensive. Not only that, but the fact that it's open-source inherently means that you can never be locked-in, and that's the killer feature for me. It may be shit, and these bugs may be fail, but at least I have the option to use something else if I ever do get annoyed enough. Don't get me wrong, these bugs are bad, but Ubuntu has a lot of great things going for it too. I'm really enjoying the lightweightedness and the super fast startup. I love VLC, and MythTV and the fact I've been able to customize the shit out of it. [Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
Dan, Interesting question. As we probably all know, Canonical have been pushing a usability drive, which is led by Mark Shuttleworth. This has produced the FUSA applet (which was developed for 8.10), the notification area overhaul (included in 9.04), the theme updates (9.10) and we have the MeMenu and some other stuff due out with Lucid. These initiatives seem to be directed by Mark Shuttleworth and he decides what is prioritized and focused on in every release. I would assume that he will eventually come round to addressing the clipboard at some point. Perhaps it's worth bringing it to his attention. Most of the discussion seems to happen within the Ayatana project, so that may be a good place to start if you're interested in making some noise :) -- MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/11334 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
Saïvann : It's not only up to xserver-xorg to fix this. There is an independent Freedesktop specification outlining how the clipboard works. It says clearly that all applications, when quitting should export the clipboard contents to the global clipboard. xserver-xorg actually adheres to the specification properly. It's actually everything else which are behaving incorrectly (a couple of them actually already work properly). So I wouldn't say that it's up to xserver-xorg to break the spec and fix this. If anything, maybe the spec should be improved, then xserver-xorg will be obliged to fix the behaviour. However I never felt technically comfortable enough to start a discussion on the Freedesktop mailing list since I don't feel I understand the underlying issues well enough. That being said, if the Canonical usability decided to focus on the clipboard for a release, the absolute bare-minimum that they would do would be to correct the behaviour of all applications installed by default. This would be a massive improvement already. They would probably also work with the Freedesktop spec in order to improve it (as they did with the notification area and are doing with the application indicators). Who knows, with any luck they could improve the clipboard beyond how it is implemented in Windows/Mac. One thing that stands out to me, is that there are no launchpad bugs for each independent application linked to this one. Someone should really go and find/submit the related bugs and link them to this one. -- MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/11334 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
