I did a complete reset of my iPod today. First just an upgrade of the
firmware (3.1 - 3.1.1) to make sure all formatting bugs would be gone.
Then a full format + fw-upgrade.
It still passes all built-in tests, but the problems with the EFI
/kernel-thning persist.
So anyone who thinks of
just a follow up:
I don't see errors any longer, with libgpod 0.3.2-0ubuntu1 and gtkpod
0.99.2-1ubuntu2. the I/O-errors I had were caused by

someone

one small note: it only works the first time I plug in my iPod, the
second time it doesn't get recognised. but it has always been like that
before :-)

Ipods react badly to checks for EFI partition tables
I have this problem too, with my 4th gen 40GB ipod though.
It usually works for some time while copying data, dut then suddenly it
seems to give up. That's when the Buffer I/O error on device sda2,
logical block blabla errors begin. Also, /dev/sd* disappear, which
causes umount to not function at
I tried both. steps to reproduce:
1) before it failed:
boot up, log in to gnome, rmmod ehci_hcd, plug in the ipod, system seems to
work fine but freezes when I try to access the ipod (actually, it was enough to
open nautilus with computer:/// as the location)
2) after it failed:

Mine (40GB 4th gen B/W) passed all tests. Still the same problems

Besides, there's other devices that experience the same problems.

so, to add it all up:
1) the current breezy kernel fries ipods
2) whether they're connected trough a hub or not
3) because there's a problem with it's firmware and how EFI handles the
ipod's requests
4) and the patch that everyone is talking about is in the kernel already:

This is not a bug. I had been struggling with Bug #59946, and it seems
that somewhere in the process I/g-s-t reset the list of groups I'm in.
Hence I wasn't in the audio group which made the soundcard inacessible.
I'm pretty sure the reset of my groups was not caused by the dist-
upgrade.
**
I just found out something really weird. It seems that I/g-s-t has reset
the list of groups I'm in. So while id said I was in plugdev, I really
wasn't.
Still that doesn't seem to be the issue. I've added myself to plugdev
again, but the error is still there.
