know whether the error is really in ftello64 or in the compiler or even in the
linked library.
I am using feisty 64bit.

I think the situation is different from what you imagine.
I would expect to see the Version upgrade button in adept, to click it, to
receive an information message saying my system is up to date and to have Gutsy
running.

I finally solved this issue.
The problem can be re-described as follows.
I am using my desktop computer to run simulations.
I have 64 bit linux and 4GB RAM.
I run simulations which can run for tenths of minutes and use a lot of virtual
memory (a python script using numpy on large matrices).
