Hi,
exactly the same for me.
I use with kubuntu 8.10 with two machines:
an IBM laptop 32bit with 1GB ram
a desktop 64bit 8 cores 4GB ram
Both give me the same problem.
As H3g3m0n reported, it looks like is more a ram than a cpu issue.
The system starts being unresponsive as soon as a process (python in my case)
requires about 500 MB for the laptop and around 2 GB for the desktop. After a
while it starts working again. When switching to another application, it
becomes unresponsive again for about a minute. It looks like the problem is
related to saving and restoring from swap.
If the amount of memory required is higher (but still less than the total
amount of ram), the system becomes unrecoverable as described by H3g3m0n.
When the system is unresponsive System Monitor reports "disk sleep" in the cpu
percentage field of some process.
Bye,
Luca
