As a point of information, I recently changed the fstab entries to state
ext4, to benefit from the slightly faster performance that new features

Install the broken 2.11.4.1-2 package again, then run:
Xorg -verbose
This would give us a more complete log that we could use to try to fix
the change that broke it, rather than simply reverse it.

Stefan, we're already aware that simply shuffling the structure as you
did for 2.6.31-10.32bug396286v2 probably only masks the real issue
rather than fixes it, but it would already be a good start to attach
this as a patch and to send it upstream for comments.
