So I kept on playing with it a little more with the default xorg.conf
file, which produces the 1280x768 output on the LVDS.
Like I said the LVDS is still not being detected, but since X assumes a
default screen size of 1280x768 on the non-attached external display I
did some more experimentation
Does this also fix the problem with CIFS mounts?
They are not properly unmounted on logout either, resulting in the
system hanging on logout waiting for server responses and flooding the
terminal with CIFS communication errors.
One has to manually unmount them before logout to circumvent this.

finally I had the time to open my box, put the additional memory-sticks

It seems that, at least for me, Gutsy Gibbon fixes the problem. I
haven't done any thorough testing yet, but it looks like my machine
doesn't freeze anymore.

i'm having the same issue. That last kernel that would power off was
2.6.17. running shutdown -h now leaves me with just a _ on the screen.
trying shutdown -h now in a rescue boot stops at 'Will now halt' then
nothing.

i just upgraded the Hoary and the behaviour as changed slightly. Now
the LVDS displays a partial screen. The resolution is set to 1280x768,
while the LVDS only supports 1024x768. Any attempt to change this

i had this problem as well on a Sony Vaio VGN-BX560B. This box has an
intel hda sound card. I was able to get the laptop to turn off by
forcing he removed of the sound module.
I did this by adding the line

After adding the line, I got kmail/kontact crash as Rafal stated above.

it may not be related, but i've noticed under Hardy and Intrepid, totem
does not like to go to full screen. under Hardy X dies altogether under
Intrepid totem just dies with the attached output.

Not sure what that means and if it's problematic at all, since as I
said, I can browse my shares at least.
However, what still doesn't work

I can NOT confirm the proposed fix. Adding fbcon to initramfs modules
list does not help. Using an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, Gutsy generic kernel.

I'm using Gutsy Beta with KNetworkManager: the same problem. It freezes when
I'm trying to connect to a WPA-Encrypted Network.
I tried it with editing the /etc/network/interfaces like it is described on
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: lirc
dpkg -L lirc states that there should be a startup script named
/etc/init.d/lirc. This file however doesn't exist
