[Bug 771875] Re: Compiz Screenshot renders blue overlay on screenshots

2012-03-26 Thread Matthias Niess
I tried the fix in #37 and it didn't work. The only thing it changes is
that it removes the dark-blue border around the light-blue box.

[Bug 971927] [NEW] Compiz window-management plugins only affect windows on current viewport

2012-04-02 Thread Matthias Niess
Public bug reported:

This bug seems to affect several things but here's a simple example:

1. open two applications on two seperate viewports
2. press super+w (which is the default key for initiating scale on *all*
viewports)

Expected: A spread of all windows on all viewports

Instead: Only the windows of the current viewport and if that doesn't
have any windows, none.

This also affects the application-spread that is initiated when you
click the app-icon on the launcher. It only shows the windows of an
application that reside on the current viewport.

Another example of how bad this is:

1. open two terminals on two seperate workspaces
2. minimize the terminal on the second workspace
3. on a third workspace click the terminal-icon on the launcher.

It will take you to the non-minimized terminal. The only way to find the
minimized terminal is by either remembering the workspace on which you
minimized it or by checking the small triangle to the left of the
terminal icon on every workspace.

This is a regression that was introduced in precise.

[Bug 933776] Re: Unity overrides compiz scale plugin behavior settings

2012-04-02 Thread Matthias Niess
Wow. This is really bad. There seem to be many strange side-effects.
Copy and pasting from #971927 here is another:

1. open two terminals on two seperate workspaces
2. minimize the terminal on the second workspace
3. on a third workspace click the terminal-icon on the launcher.

It will take you to the non-minimized terminal. The only way to find the
minimized terminal is by either remembering the workspace on which you
minimized it or by checking the small triangle to the left of the
terminal icon on every workspace. So this also breaks the application
spread behavior.

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-11-12 Thread Matthias Niess
As it currently stands, I'd like to remind you of what I wrote in #122.
Compiz in 12.04 is broken. I get calls on an almost daily basis because
this bug breaks window management. If all that holds us back from
reverting that one commit are changed shortcuts then lets make an
exception.

Sebastien wrote in #123 that you hate those dpkg notifications that
prompt the user to do some actions. But looking at the 3 options we
have, I know which one I'd pick:

1. live with a broken compiz
2. hack compiz to add an extra show all windows option, additionally to the
existing one, that actually does show all windows so that we don't have to
change shortcuts (this would be an awefully ugly hack IMO)
3. display a notification on upgrade Due to an upgrade some of your shortcuts
for window management need to be restored. Please click on 'Restore shortcuts'
to do that now. (which runs a script to recursively unset the relevant keys,
or - if you want to get fancy - checks the currently defined shortcuts and sets
them at the appropriate places).

I really really think we should go with option 3. Do we really want two
initiate window picker on all viewports options?

[Bug 1077981] [NEW] udev rules from persistent usb-stick leak to installs

2012-11-12 Thread Matthias Niess
Public bug reported:

The problem happens with a live-USB stick created with the Startup Disk
Creator with persistence turned on. As expected, every network interface
of every machine the stick is booted on gets an entry in
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.

The unexpected behavior here is, that the file ends up on installations
made with the USB stick. On a vanilla install you end up with your
interfaces named wlan8 and eth12. I experienced cases were no network
connections were possible until the huge list of rules was deleted.

I attached an anonymized example of 70-persistent-net.rules.

This bug-report was created out of a vanilla install of Ubuntu in a
virtualbox vm.

I guess this behavior is wanted. But can the person who did this please

Also: wasn't the expected bahavior of the unity launcher that when I

2013-04-13 Thread Matthias Niess
I just tried it and it doesn in fact work. With window-decorations off I
don't get the black window after restoring it.

[Bug 1062186] Re: 'Backup Failed' message when external backup drive first inserted

2013-04-26 Thread Matthias Niess
I added deja-dup to the bug-report so that this appears in *their*
bugtracker and not the ubuntu-packages. I'm sure this is a race
condition.

I get the error when I plug in my slow external HDD. Leaving it plugged
in I trigger the backups again by pluggin in another USB device. As the
backup-drive is already mounted there is no race-condition and the
backup works.

Maybe the fact that restarting Unity solves the problem at least for the

[Bug 1070427] Re: Ubiquity removes kernel headers, fails to build nonfree drivers

2012-12-05 Thread Matthias Niess
I know point releases are not planned for non-LTS releases. But
shouldn't there be an exception if there are serious problems with
ubiquity. I'd argue that a majority of users will install binary drivers
which leads to unexperienced users being left with unusable systems. The
interwebs is full with reports of people talking about re-installing
Ubuntu over and over and always failing when they try to install the
nvidia drivers.

[Bug 858845] Re: Screen edge actions set in CCSM don't work (sometimes)

2012-12-19 Thread Matthias Niess
I've got a feeling that bugs outside the default behavior of Ubuntu
won't be fixed. There's few people left working on compiz and they
probably won't work on bugs that only exist after you use advanced
features of compiz. This is really too bad ;(

If this bug is really the unity plugin rewriting all shortcuts, maybe we
should add unity to this bug?

[Bug 858845] Re: unityshell being last in plugin load-order causes shortcut loss

2012-12-19 Thread Matthias Niess
** Description changed:

- I have set expo edge to bottom right. After reboot, often this setting
- does not seem to work. To re-enable expo edge, I have to clear it in
- compizconfig settings manager and re-set it to bottom right.
+ PROBLEM:
+ If the unityshell plugin is loaded after compiz plugins like scale or expo,
those plugins will lose their active corner settings. The settings are still
set but don't have any effect. Keyboad shortcuts are not affected.
+
+ This looks like a problem in the unityshell plugin.
+
+ WORKAROUND:
+ Re-order the list of plugins to move expo and scale (or whatever else you
use) behind unityshell.
+
+ In 12.04 the list of plugins is found in this gconf key
+ /apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins
+
+ In 12.10 it is this dconf key
+ /org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins-with-set-keys
+

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-07-12 Thread Matthias Niess
@Sebastien, regarding your lengthy comment at Bruno: I don't want to add
more noise but remind you of an older comment. In comment #88 Daniel
stated that this regression is caused by a single commit that caused
multiple regressions in scale. I have the same issues as Bruno on every
single (vanilla) Ubuntu machine I supervise. Super+w sometimes does send
windows fly all over the place and I do get empty windows a lot.

If this is all caused by one commit, aren't all these regressions
essentially the same bug?

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-07-12 Thread Matthias Niess
Regarding a mechanism to properly migrate users-settings without hacking new
stuff into compiz:
There are several packages that trigger a notification that asks the user to do
stuff. ecryptfs asks the users to write down their passphrases, dropbox asks
them to restart nautilus.

What about adding that kind of notification just to this particular
update telling the user that some compiz settings have to be reset to
their default value. There could be a button that runs a script which
does a recursive-unset on the relevant keys. I'm pretty sure these
notifications work on a per-user basis, so that multiple users on a
system will all get the message to run the script.

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-07-13 Thread Matthias Niess
The updated packages in in Timos PPA (0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.3~test5) don't
fix the bug for me. Neither this bug, nor #955035 are fixed for me.
Super+w only shows current workspace windows and looking in ccms it is
bound to show windows from all workspaces.

[Bug 1017889] [NEW] ov51x-jpeg-source package is obsolete

2012-06-26 Thread Matthias Niess
Public bug reported:

The package can be removed. Most of the webcams it supported, are now
supported through gspca. For other (very old) webcams support is lost.

[Bug 1079731] Re: [quantal] Minecraft can't go fullscreen

2014-02-01 Thread Matthias Niess
I'd like to re-open this bug. This still doesn't work and id *does* seem
to be a problem with Unity. I'm on 13.10 with the latest Orcacle Java
and the latest Minecraft build. Running it through compiz (i.e. Unity)
has the fullscreen issue. Running Minecraft in Gnome Shell our without
any DE at all (through xinit) works as it should.

Minecraft is (still) a popular game that works correctly everywhere
except under Unity/Compiz.

[Bug 858845] Re: Screen edge actions set in CCSM (scale/expo) don't work (sometimes) - plugin load-order causes the shortcut loss

[Bug 1219337] Re: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo.

2013-09-09 Thread Matthias Niess
I still get the feeling that you don't see the seriousness of this bug.
Any drive-by browser-exploit can now escalate to root privileges because
of this. Most Ubuntu users are running it with their admin account (that
has sudo privileges). Running the wrong script or visiting the wrong
website will be enough.

[Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white

2013-07-25 Thread Matthias Niess
I updated the description with the workaround instructions on how to
reproduce. According to the related branches the apparent fix was merged
into Compiz 0.9.8. I have 0.9.9 (raring) and it is not actually fixed.
Was the fix removed again from 0.9.8 or is this wrongly marked fix
released?

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: compiz

When switching focus from one window to another, the target window may
become blank. See the attached screenshot, where I opened two gnome-
terminals and clicked on their titlebars alternately - the issue was
triggered after about 5-10 clicks. I've had this happen on other
appications too, e.g. software-centre, empathy, etc.

- Doing shade+unshade, maximizing or clicking away from the problematic
- window usually makes the window contents come back. The window remains
- responsive to both keyboard and mouse (by the way, in the screenshot the
- mouse cursor was an I-beam before I pressed PrtScr).
+ HOW TO REPRODUCE:
+ 1. Minimize a window
+ 2. Initiate Scale and deactivate it again (press Super+W to show all windows
and then press it again to go back to normal)
+ 3. Click the window icon on the launcher to maximize it again.
+ 4. The window contents will be white or black depending on the Ubuntu version

[Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white

2012-11-23 Thread Matthias Niess
@Alistair Buxton: I'm really confused reading your last comments. What
exact version of compiz are you using and which versions of the nvidia
binary drivers?

I am able to reproduce this with four different nvidia graphic adapters
(two mobile and two desktops) on 12.04 AND 12.10. I didn't test *all*
driver combinations. All computers use nvidia-current except for my main
desktop where I use nvidia-experimental-310 (and where I have used all
other combinations of drivers and OS).

I can reproduce the bug on every Ubuntu-machine (with nvidia graphics)
since 12.04 using the steps mentioned above resulting in white and black
windows respectively.

So for users encountering this, Ubuntu seems to be broken. Nvidia is one
of the most popular graphic chipsets. This bug should be the one most
worked on, I believe. I can't find a launchpad branch linked to this
bug, though. So is anyone working on this? Do you (whoever you are) need
help working on this bug? What needs to be done?

[Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white

2012-11-23 Thread Matthias Niess
It's not simple. 12.04 comes with compiz 0.9.7.6. So it is no wonder you
can't reproduce the bug there. This bugreport is about the compiz
versions that ship with Ubuntu and not stuff you compiled yourself. You
should report those bugs in the launchpad for Compiz and not the
launchpad for Ubuntu.

For 12.10: what do you mean with stable compiz release? I get a feeling
you're (again) not talking about the compiz that comes with Ubuntu.

[Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white

2012-11-23 Thread Matthias Niess
@Alistair: I read all your comments. No reason to be impolite here. If
what you wrote was clear enough, people wouldn't ask. You obviously use
compiz versions that don't ship with the respective Ubuntu versions, so
excuse me and the other commenters for asking details. I'm still not
sure if you use the stock compiz on 12.10 (i.e. the one shipped with
Ubuntu) or the current stable one from the compiz devs (with the same
version) that might not have patches that the Ubuntu-version of Compiz
has.

In any case: Either report a seperate bug or wait for this one to be
fixed to see if yours is fixed, too. You might want to report it here:
https://launchpad.net/compiz.

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-12-11 Thread Matthias Niess
I don't see how a corporate environment profits from installing non-LTS
releases or using an obscure PPA (no offense Bruno) to get rid of this
bug. This bug (and the many bugs resulting from the commit that causes
it) makes 12.04 kind of unusable for many people. All options are on the
table. Living with a broken Ubuntu for the next two years can't be the
preferred option.

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-12-12 Thread Matthias Niess
@johnlea: I proposed a solution in #122 and #136.

If I understand correctly bug #689733 was just an incorrectly set
shortcut (super+w was set to scale all viewports instead of scale
current viewport). The solution (again, if I understand correctly) was
to hack scale all viewports to display only the windows on the current
viewport (which is an ugly hack and introduced a ton of other bugs).

Introducing a new option to compiz and keeping scale all viewports as
it is would cause problems with with the upgrade path to 14.04, wouldn't
it?

Having to change a keycombo is such a minor annoyance compared to having
this bug (and all that come with it, flying windows, etc.). And as
proposed in #122 we could even do it automatically.

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-12-12 Thread Matthias Niess
@seb128: the problem goes much deeper than the show all windows thing.
As far as I can see the offending commit is just reverted in 12.10 and
the shortcuts are set correctly. This fixes everything (tm).

*Only* offering an option to show all windows will still leave all the
other bugs that would be fixed by reverting the offending commit (flying
windows, ...). Just as another incentive to really fix this instead of
adding another hack to the first one that causes all the problems.

I don't know what feedback you get from corporate users (employees won't
come here to report bugs) but I know several small businesses (50-150
employees) that suffer from this bug. We keep many users at 10.04 and
the rest uses 12.10 (which we hate because it means a lot of extra
work).

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-12-12 Thread Matthias Niess
@seb128: argh. I meant this fixeD everything (for 12.10 that is).

I know it's only one issue per bug report. But the underlying problem is
a single commit and many bugs are connected to fixing this bug correctly
(which has been done for 12.10). This bug produces issues for people who
don't even use scale all. Most corporte users don't use scale all but
they do see the flying windows.

@mc3man: the problem fixing this bug is that if you fix it the default
behavior changes and you can't change the user settings on upgrade. The
only way to do that is ask for user interaction through a notification
(the way it happens when you install Dropbox). That would work but
bothering the user with notifications is unwanted, so it won't happen.

The way I see it this bug is unfixable with the only acceptable solution
apparently being the introduction of a second hack that will (I think)
introduce even more problems for the next dist-upgrade.

[Bug 858845] Re: Screen edge actions set in CCSM (scale/expo) don't work (sometimes) - plugin load-order causes the shortcut loss

2013-01-28 Thread Matthias Niess
Changing the order doesn't solve the bug. It just is a workaround (that
for me doesn't work *all* the time). The bug is in the unity plugin
overwriting the edge actions (deducing this from the bug not appearing
when unity is not loaded and appearing only sometimes when unity is
loaded before other plugins).

[Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white

2013-01-09 Thread Matthias Niess
I think it is safe to assume that the person this bug is assigned to
won't fix it as he doesn't work on compiz any more. Compiz itself is a
dead project. The only work on it are hacks to bend it to the will of
Unity. What I'm saying: any non-developer investigating this bug is most
probably wasting their time. As sad as it is.

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-05-10 Thread Matthias Niess
@corey: Actually the dependencies don't matter. I'll just branch the
upstream compiz code, apply the patch, put my branch on launchpad and
submit a merge proposal. Launchpad is really awesome in how easy it
makes participation.

Working on Ubuntu packages is a bit more difficult. I'll have to find
the package where the default key bindings are set (I'm pretty sure I
already know where to look), create a patch and put that patch into the
quilt system for the package. I've messed this up countless times, so
we'll have to see :-) But addings Doughs patch should be quickly done.
I'll be at home in 6 hours and do it!

@Corey: This is not a discussion forum. But as I said, you don't need to
install the dependencies. If you're interested in such stuff check out
the Ubuntu packaging documentation. When I test the fixed package it
will be automatically built by pbuilder in a chroot environment (so your
own system is not affected). When the test is successful I'll just run
bzr lp-propose and the fixes are sent to the compiz developers for
review.

[Bug 844119] Re: Hitting Alt-Tab does not display Libre Office in list of switchable open applications

2012-09-24 Thread Matthias Niess
I confirm this is still present in Ubuntu 12.04. It happens to me no
matter if I have lo-menubar installed or not. I can't alt-tab to
libreoffice documents. This happens on all my installations of Ubuntu.
The Icon correctly shows up in the launcher and in the ALT TAB view. The
application just won't focus.

As far as I can see this only happens when LO is opened by double-
clicking a file (which is probably the way people usually open it). I
also don't have the default shortcuts so LO in the launcher.
