really know how to validate a pdf file, but according to this web
service ( http://www.pdf-tools.com/pdf/validate-pdfa-online.aspx ) the

just had this problem when installing 12.04.2 LTS on a macbook pro 5.5
i could use the default image, but at the grub boot parameters i had to add
nomodeset and remove the gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode. for debugging purposes i
removed quiet and splash earlier to see where it hangs...

is this about manually cropping after the scan or is it actually about
properly applying the selected paper size?
if it is about the latter, please read Bug #550856 that discusses how
utterly broken it is. also mention that it is about paper size so we can
merge the bugs and centralize
