I also tried linking in the icons from
/usr/share/icons/Human/scalable/status/, including both notification-
display-brightness and notification-keyboard-brightness, but nothing
seems to work.
Changing the icon theme to Human however does allow brightness
notifications to work, just as a sanity
Scratch that, the display-brightness icons work, if you have them ALL (I
initially tested with just the full and high figuring it would show
notifications in just that zone at least, apparently not).
So for me a sudo ln -s /usr/share/icons/Human/scalable/status

another OS, and it may even be desired to change the Windows shortcut
and not this one.

You seem to have lost window borders. To fix this, go to the System
menu at the top panel of Gnome, then Preferences, then Appearance.
Now choose the last tab, Visual Effects, and choose the first option
None for your visual effects. You can probably change back to what you
had before now.

I just want to add another voice saying that I have been running ext4
in Jaunty with no problems. It has been excellent so far! Having a
backup is wise, but that is nothing new.
