I've just ran into the same problem updating my Intrepid to latest
kernel. I was using 2.6.27-7 for some time, and updating to latest
2.6.27- raised this problem after reboot.
The strange point is, now the only kernel that works is the old
2.6.24-21-generic: I also have 2.6.27-4, 2.6.27-6 and

I've reproduced this bug using kernel 2.6.27-rc3 in Hardy (I cannot
upgrade this computer), using images provided by Ben Collins:

Obviously I'm using Hardy, as the title of the bug says.
Here's the output of dmesg. The I/O errors look like saying that /dev/sdb1
cannot be read, and this is normal since the hard disk is on /dev/sdc now, as
states mount:
/dev/sdb1 on /media/WD Passport__ type fuseblk
What would be nice here is that gnome-volume-manager allows you to kill
the application in case it does so, or at least to tell which app is
involved. But the file manager hasn't to check what the helper
applications do, since as a general rule they should not block things
silently.

I've found an issue (I don't know if this is really a bug) in 2.6 about
the ordering of the fonts list not pushing at the end Arabic fonts
anymore, but I don't know whether this is Ubuntu-related. Since I cannot
report it in Ubuntu, I've put it here:
I would have got a better one, but as I said I need help: I installed
all packages I thought were needed, but the trace is still quite empty.
And apport failed to retrace it so there must be something complex
behind this.

Do you mean good by sharp? If yes, we can mark this bug as Fix
committed and simply wait for Hardy to be released, I guess the Gutsy
backport is simply a testing version, isn't it?

Hubert Figuiere: Thanks for your point - I did not know the plugins were
already included in trunk upstream in 2.4. So this is an Ubuntu-specific
bug that could be fixed without too much problems.
Concerning ODT by default, this is a real problem (in both ways), but
anyway this won't be fixed
