[Bug 1346234] Re: Allow running updates without authentication

2014-07-25 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
Hi Harald.
I'm sorry, I understood it as I *could* configure it locally.
This was meant as way to make things easier for all Kubuntu users.
Perhaps this is the wrong forum to bring it up ?

[Bug 1346234] Re: Allow running updates without authentication

2014-07-25 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
I originally filed the bug on Muon Updater because I do not wish to create a
situation where the user can install/remove stuff without authenticating.
I do not think from a security point of view there is a problem in running
updates that would in other situations be run automatically but the system.

Should I understand that it is not straightforward to grant Update
rights without granting install/remove rights?

[Bug 1346234] [NEW] Allow running updates without authentication

2014-07-21 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
Public bug reported:

In muon-updater when running updates the action scope of the user is
limited to update the packages or don't. For people in sudoers (users
not governed by a sysadmin) the authentication/type your password step
could be skipped as they can't really do anything to compromise the
system.

According to Muons developers this is configurable through Polkit. If we
changed this default it would running updates on Kubuntu less of a hassle.
It may also improve security as there are less reasons to constantly type your
password - which may be exploited by a scam.

[Bug 260722] Re: Please update virtualbox-modules for 2.6.24-21 (copy to updates together with kernel)

This is a non-issue today as all the kernel-modules are automatically fixed
when you get a new kernel.
I suggest that you update to a newer release. In at least the last two
releases(9.04 and 9.10), this has not been a problem.

[Bug 481294] [NEW] Kubuntu website doesn't have a single screenshot

2009-11-12 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
Public bug reported:

When you go to the kubuntu.org website, the first thing you are met with
is news about kubuntu not meeting its full potential (aka timelord).
Next thing is Jonathan paddling through white-water with the title
welcome to Kubuntu 9.10

There is not a single screenshot anywhere.

I know marketing is not Kubuntus strong side, but this is ridiculous.

[Bug 454606] [NEW] Video/audio streaming over ssh broken

2009-10-18 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdemultimedia

Neither video or audio-streaming is working over ssh. E.g. the fish or sftp
protocols.
Can't get it to work in either kaffeine or dragon player.
This is an updated Karmic koala pr 18/10 2009

Use case:
Open dolphin and go to your server via the sftp protocol.
Open a video-file with dragon or kaffeine. It won't start playing, unless it
copies it to a temp dir first.

I'm guessing this is a problem with the phonon setup.

[Bug 280997] Re: solid-bluetooth needs update for bluez 4.x

2008-10-25 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
Surely you can make a special package of bluez-gnome and once the kde-
bluetooth is ready make the kde package depend on a package that
uninstalls the special package.

Less than 10% reads the release notes is my guess.
Having blues-gnome on the cd wouldn't be bad. It's not that big! It's much
better than loading the livecd and seeing that your mouse doesn't work.
Bluetooth is an important factor.

I think bluez-gnome is our best option right now.
Yes, it's a bit embarrasing that we will have to depend on the gnome interface
in kde, but a lot of people depend on bluetooth and that's more important.

[Bug 287853] [NEW] Grub-editor settings are overridden by upgrade

2008-10-22 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
Public bug reported:

I used the grub editor in kde4 systemsettings panel to remove some of the
kernel-listings that grub can run.
When I upgraded the linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic package I was told there was a
conflict because I had edited the grub file. Did I want to install the new one
supplied or did I want to keep my own.
The upgrade should just add the new kernel to the menu and keep the users
settings.

[Bug 253831] Re: Should ship new kernel modules at same time as new kernel

2008-10-14 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
Yes. DKMS seems like a really good way of doing it.

Unfortunatly it doesn't work very well for Virtualbox yet.
This is what I get when I start virtualbox, even though I have the packages
installed and the module is compiled everytime I kernel-upgrade:
-
WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist.
Please install the virtualbox-ose-source package and the appropriate
 headers, most likely linux-headers-generic.

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.

Is there a way to recompile the modules manually to see exactly what is
happening?

[Bug 60752] Re: Does not resume from suspend

2008-10-14 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
It's very strange!
I've been following the guide on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend
When I run the following as root, I resume just fine:
sync; echo 1 /sys/power/pm_trace; /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force
however, when I suspend using the Guidance power manager I don't resume
properly.
Could this be a permissions problem?

[Bug 253831] Re: Should ship new kernel modules at same time as new kernel

However, now VirtualBox reports the following error:

VirtualBox can't operate in VMX root mode. Please disable the KVM kernel

Does this mean I can't have kvm installed in parralel or does it mean that the
new kernel has been compiled with something that virtualbox can't handle?

[Bug 273762] [NEW] Solution to suspend on Lenovo T61

2008-09-23 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

I've never been able to suspend with a standard ubuntu before. I found
this trick on thinkwiki.org and it works both in Hardy and Intrepid.

edit this file: /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/20-video-
quirk-pm-lenovo.fdi

Add the following at the bottom of the file just before /device
 !-- T61 646065G uses NVidia driver --
  match key=system.hardware.product string=646065G
!-- Proprietray NVidia driver quirks --
merge key=power_management.quirk.s3_mode type=booltrue/merge
merge key=power_management.quirk.s3_bios type=boolfalse/merge
merge key=power_management.quirk.save_pci type=booltrue/merge
  /match

After a reboot it allowed me to suspend and resume just fine.

The hardware string that it matches on is of course specific for my model of
T61, so to make a generic solution you would have to match on more.
It seems also to work on this machine: 6457CTO

The following was tested to work on model 6459CTO using the open source NV
driver:
merge key=power_management.quirk.s3_bios type=booltrue/merge

[Bug 270750] Re: Automatic file-extension is added to late

2008-09-19 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
Kubuntu Hardy 8.04, OO.o 2.4.1

Reproduction steps:
cd /tmp
touch opg3
soffice
Save the file in /tmp as opg3. After clicking save it will tell you that the
file already exists

I'm starting to belive that it's the kde save file dialog that isn't
being told that the filename is going to be attached an extension,
because it's the same dialog that I get in other KDE programs if I
actually try to overwrite a file.

[Bug 270750] [NEW] Automatic file-extension is added to late

2008-09-15 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
Public bug reported:

I have a folder with a text-file called opg1.
When I try to save a writer-document with automatic file-extension called opg1
it says that the file already exists. Yes, opg1 already exists, but writer is
going to save the file as opg.odt, so it's not a problem.
However writer seems to think so :-)

Foldersharing through samba is not allowed for users by default in Kubuntu.
I think it should because it's a complicated process of enabling this manually

[Bug 253831] [NEW] Should ship new kernel modules at same time as new kernel

2008-07-31 Thread Pascal d'Hermilly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-20-generic

I use virtualbox, and everytime I get a kernel upgrade, e.g. from
2.6.24-19 to 2.6.24-20, my virtualization breaks for several days. It
renders the whole virtualization option useless as I can not depend on
it.

Anyway, there should be a procedure to make certain that the kernel
modules for the new kernel are shipped at the same time as the new
kernel.

Otherwise people will stop updating as their computer is often rendered
useless at certain tasks for several days after.
