[Bug 1077522] Re: Wrong PPD (again) for HP LaserJet 5

2018-08-10 Thread Paul Abrahams
Since I no longer have this printer (it served me well for 20 years),
the bug is no longer a problem.

The LaserJet 5 was a marvelous printer -- for its time!

[Bug 1637753] Re: Bad interaction between pulseaudio and bluetooth

2016-10-29 Thread Paul Abrahams
A couple of other things: First, at one point I did have the headphones
working, but I haven't been able to get them working again. Second, the
expected behavior: Using the Phonon settings, I should be able to switch
easily between the built-in speakers and the headphones, or even between
two different sets of headphones as long as they are paired to the
laptop.

[Bug 1637753] [NEW] Bad interaction between pulseaudio and bluetooth

2016-10-29 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

I'm running Kubuntu 14.04. I am trying to use my headphones to listen to
music from my laptop. The headphones are correctly paired, and I get a
message to that effect, but I can't switch the audio output to bluetooth
-- it just isn't listed in the Phonon settings of System Settings, nor
does it show up in pavucontrol. There have been many reports of
difficulty in using bluetooth with pulseaudio in addition to this,
particularly for Kubuntu 14.04.

[Bug 1604113] [NEW] qapt package installer's output all on one line

2016-07-18 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

When I invoke QApt Package Installer (usually the default for package
installations under Kubuntu 14.04), the status output all appears on one
line, which makes it unreadable. I expect that the problem has to do
with an error in the end-of-line logic for whatever is logging the
installation output. Perhaps newlines are being ignored.

The interval between them varies widely. I have kernel

"wpa_supplicant CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED reason=6". My router is a TP-

[Bug 1458716] [NEW] No separator between message list and message text in kmail

[Bug 1449146] Re: Failure after boot-choice screen on power up

2015-04-30 Thread Paul Abrahams
I'm returning the machine to Amazon, so I can't test the newer kernels.
It has a much worse problem: the graphics, at least under Kubuntu, are
intolerably slow. I've tried switching the graphics drivers and it
didn't help, although there's such a multiplicity of them that I can't
be sure I didn't miss the best one. From what I read on the Net,
there's no consensus about what graphics driver to install.

[Bug 1449146] [NEW] Failure after boot-choice screen on power up

2015-04-27 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

I have a newly installed Kubuntu 15.10 system. I power on my machine (a
new HP Pavilion All-In-One) and I see the boot choice screen, with
Ubuntu as the default choice. If I take that choice, the screen goes
dark for ten seconds or so, then turns a series of solid colors (all
white, all red, all green, etc.) After that it turns dark and becomes
unresponsive. The behavior is consistent.

I can get past the problem by selecting the last boot choice (System
Settings or something like that), which brings me to an HP choice screen
where I can select Ubuntu. This time I get to the initial bootup screen
(Ubuntu, etc.) but in a higher-resolution mode than the first one. This
time the Ubuntu choice works properly.

A possibly related problem is that when I suspend my (correctly running)
system and then try to resume it, the screen looks correct but the
keyboard and mouse are dead.

[Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe

2015-01-28 Thread Paul Abrahams
I just upgraded a system from Kubuntu 14.04 to Kubuntu 14.10, and the
broken pipe error popped up. Some questions for the suffering
populace:

1. Does the error occur with 14.04 or only with 14.10?

2. Does it occur with 14.10 installed directly or only with 14.10
upgraded from 14.04?

In my experience it is specifically associated with upgrading 14.04 to
14.10 but is not associated with specific video hardware since it has
been reported both for Nvidia video and Intel video. Does anyone have
experience to the contrary?

[Bug 1412594] [NEW] System hangs when kstart used in autostart script

2015-01-19 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

I was trying to use kstart to start three programs in three different desktops

  kstart --desktop 2 kmail
  kstart --desktop 3 konsole

[Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe

2015-01-08 Thread Paul Abrahams
I.ve installed the 20140923 microcode update. It solved the buffer
underrun problem I was having but not the broken pipe problem. The
reason I thought it would help is that I saw a post somewhere saying
that this update worked but the previous one (20140624) did not. I've
been trying without success to find that post again to see just what it
was that this update was supposed to have fixed.

With this update I get the line in dmesg that says

CPU0 microcode updated early to revision 0x29, date = 2013-06-12

The form of the line seems correct but the date looks suspicious.

Meanwhile thes primary problem remains unsolved -- I can't get past the
broken pipe message. After it comes up I get bounced to a virtual
console.

[Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe

2015-01-05 Thread Paul Abrahams
After poking around I learned that the cure is to install a correction
to the Intel microcode. That in turn requires installing theintel-
microcode 2.20140913.1ubuntu2 source package, which is available from
Launchpad. However, I haven't yet figured out how to actually do that.
The Archlinux folks have some information on this subject. I didn't
realize that Linux actually has the ability to install mods to the Intel
microcode.

If any one else decides to follow through on this, please post your
findings here.

[Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe

2015-01-03 Thread Paul Abrahams
I too get this message in Kubuntu 14.10. I have a Lenovo laptop with
Intel integrated graphics.

I actually have two Kubuntu 14.10's in different partitions on this
machine. I'm writing this from what I'll call P1, which I had abandoned
because the partition was too small for my needs. So I created P2, which
has plenty of space. P2 was running just fine for a couple of months
when it suddenly started misbehaving badly. After a reboot (to P2) I
got just a black screen, though I was able to get to a virtual console
with Ctl-Alt-F1 and thus get much more information about the system.
When I booted P2 via a slightly different route I got the error while
reading from descriptor message.

So I now have P1, which works but is not fully usable, and P2, which
gives me a black screen. That opens up some potential ways of
diagnosing the problem since I can compare the two systems. In
particular, I ran dmsg in both systems and compared the two outputs to
find the first significant difference. I found this sequence in P2:

[1.143424] [drm] Replacing VGA console driver
[1.143428] checking generic (e000 41) vs hw (e000 1000)
[1.143429] fb: switching to inteldrmfb from VESA VGA
[1.143449] Console: switching to colour dummy device 80x25

But in P1 (the correct one) the lines 428 and 429 are absent.

This probably points directly to the bug if only I knew how to interpret
it. P2 was fully updated when it started misbehaving; P1 was not.

[Bug 1299225] Re: stale nfs file handle blocks shutdown

2014-04-03 Thread Paul Abrahams
I can suggest the outline of a fix, but I don't have enough system
knowledge to provide the actual code.

What's needed is a script in one of the /etc/rc.d files that checks all
mounted filesystems to see if they are remote. If a filesystem is
remote, then it is forcibly unmounted. This script should be positioned
so that it is executed before the networks are shut down and before the
general unmounting.

I'm not sure about the best criterion for choosing the filesystems to be
unmounted in this way. It might be better to see what device the root
filesystem is on and unmount everything but the ones on that device.

I can believe that upstart is the correct package, but
FindRightPackage would never lead me there.

The problem of making sure that remote filesystems are detached before
the network is shut down has been around in several guises for quite a
while.

[Bug 1299225] [NEW] stale nfs file handle blocks shutdown

2014-03-28 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

I'm running a fully updated Kubuntu 13.10 on a 64-bit Lenovo Z58 laptop.
When I shut down, the shutdown process gets stuck with the message
stale nfs file handle. The system just sits there thereafter. I know
what's going on but I don't know what to do about it, and a system fix
is clearly needed.

I have a mounted remote nfs file system. At shutdown, the network shuts
down and leaves the connection stranded before the file system can be
unmounted. This problem has been reported already in connection with
cifs but not, as far as I know, in connection with nfs.

What's needed is a check of mounted file systems before the network is
shut down. Any remote file system, whether cifs or nfs, should then be
unmounted. Only after the unmount is confirmed can the shutdown
process continue. I don't have enough system knowledge to implement
this myself, or I would.

[Bug 1093217] Re: 8086:0166 [Lenovo IdeaPad Z580] 12.04-13.10 10-20min boot delay (From 3.2.0.29-3.12-rc2)

2014-01-02 Thread Paul Abrahams
I also have a Lenovo Z580 running (Kubuntu) 13.10. I have a slightly
different problem (also reported elsewhere) that I assume has the same
cause and probably the same fix. My system often freezes for anywhere
from 10 seconds to a minute or two. Switching to a virtual console and
back seems to help speed up the recovery but I'm not sure of that.
It's particularly noticeable when running Firefox, but I've seen it in
other contexts. The mouse continues to work during the freeze.

[Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)

[Bug 1081185] Re: Touchpad can't be deactivated after a while

I doubt if this will be of much help:

[Bug 1081185] [NEW] Touchpad can't be deactivated after a while

2012-11-20 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

I'm running Kubuntu 12.04.1. When I first start a session, I can (and
do) deactivate the touchpad with Fn-F6 on my Lenovo laptop. But later
on, something -- I don't know what -- reactivates the touchpad and I
can't shut it off using normal means. At the same time the Systems
Settings section for the touchpad changes and no longer offers the
option of shutting off the touchpad if the mouse is active.

Fortunately I seem to be able (so far) to deactivate the touchpad with
this:

xinput set-prop 13 Device Enabled 0

but that shouldn't be necessary.

I have version 1.6.2-1ubuntu1~precise2 of server-xorg-input-synaptics.
But I'm not sure that's the program responsible for the problem.

Voila!

pa@morchella:~$ do-release-upgrade -d
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
No new release found

I also tried removing update-manager-core completely and reinstalling it
in the hope that some troublesome file might be replaced. No luck with
that either.

I think the solution lies in understanding how update-manager-core goes
about deciding if there is indeed a new release available, and I haven't
been able to find that out.

[Bug 1080131] Re: update manager doesn't find 12.10 upgrade

2012-11-20 Thread Paul Abrahams
A clue:

The file /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-
packages/UpdateManager/Core/DistUpgradeFetcherCore.py seems to be where
the decision-making happens. And it seems to depend in very particular
ways on the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list. Unfortunately I just
don't know enough about the context to analyze this any further.

It does seem that if /etc/apt/sources.list is not quite in the form that
this program is expecting, the upgrade won't be found. But I can't tell
just what it's looking for.

if it helps, here's the contents of my /etc/apt/sources.list:

Here it is, but I don't think you'll find any gold in them thar' hills:

root@morchella:/home/pa# cat /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades
# Default behavior for the release upgrader.

[DEFAULT]
# Default prompting behavior, valid options:
#
# never - Never check for a new release.
# normal - Check to see if a new release is available. If more than one new
# release is found, the release upgrader will attempt to upgrade to
# the release that immediately succeeds the currently-running
# release.
# lts- Check to see if a new LTS release is available. The upgrader
# will attempt to upgrade to the first LTS release available after
# the currently-running one. Note that this option should not be
# used if the currently-running release is not itself an LTS
# release, since in that case the upgrader won't be able to
# determine if a newer release is available.

[Bug 1080131] [NEW] update manager doesn't find 12.10 upgrade

2012-11-17 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

I'm running Kubuntu 12.04.1 on three machines. On none of them can I
upgrade to 12.10. I never see the notifier, and apt-get dist-upgrade
finds nothing. Here's what demonstrates the point:

root@morchella:/home/pa/.config/synaptiks# cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=12.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=precise
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
root@morchella:/home/pa/.config/synaptiks# do-release-upgrade -c
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
No new release found

I've set the upgrade prompt to Normal; that doesn't help at all.

All three machines have their software sources list created by Ubuntu
Software Sources, so there's a lot of stuff on it.

[Bug 1077522] [NEW] Wrong PPD (again) for HP LaserJet 5

2012-11-10 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

The PPD that I get for the HP LaserJet 5 with a fully updated Kubuntu
12.04 is the wrong one. Twice before I've had the correct one, only to
have an update bring back the wrong one. The correct one is what I get
when I select the old PPD while installing the printer using Kubuntu's
System Settings. The wrong one goes into duplex mode automatically and
doesn't recognize the request to turn duplexing off.

[Bug 932882] Re: Update of a printer driver package does not update the PPD files of the existing queues for this driver

2012-11-09 Thread Paul Abrahams
I ran into a PPD problem after an update of Kubuntu 12.04. Before the
update, my LaserJet 5 normally printed in single-page mode. After the
update it printed in duplex mode and I couldn't get it to print in
single-page mode. The problem was an incorrect version of the PPD,
which I verified by reinstalling the printer and asking for the old
ppd.

I had this problem once before, where my printer suddenly starting
printing in duplex mode all the time. Again, the problem was an update
that installed an incorrect ppd.

[Bug 1044156] Re: gpg key retrieval gives bogus, confusing error message

2012-10-18 Thread Paul Abrahams
I don't think that ufw/iptables has anything to do with the problem.
Look at this:

root@Lenovo-Z580:~# host pgpkeys.mit.edu
pgpkeys.mit.edu is an alias for CRYPTONOMICON.mit.edu.
CRYPTONOMICON.mit.edu has address 18.9.60.141
root@Lenovo-Z580:~# gpg --keyserver hkp://pgpkeys.mit.edu --recv-keys
A8AA1FAA3F055C03
gpg: requesting key 3F055C03 from hkp server pgpkeys.mit.edu
?: pgpkeys.mit.edu: Host not found
gpgkeys: HTTP fetch error 7: couldn't connect: Success
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
gpg: Total number processed: 0
root@Lenovo-Z580:~# gpg --keyserver hkp://18.9.60.141 --recv-keys
A8AA1FAA3F055C03
gpg: requesting key 3F055C03 from hkp server 18.9.60.141
gpg: /root/.gnupg/trustdb.gpg: trustdb created
gpg: key 3F055C03: public key Launchpad PPA for Daniel Richter imported
gpg: no ultimately trusted keys found
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: imported: 1 (RSA: 1)

If you use the Web address of the keyserver, the key retrieval fails.
If you use its IP address, the key retrieval succeeds. If there was any
kind of firewall problem involved, either both of these should succeed
or both of these should fail (or it's a pitiful firewall indeed). The
problem seems to lie in the way that gpg resolves URLs, or perhaps in
how it finds a nameserver to resolve them.

[Bug 1044156] Re: gpg key retrieval gives bogus, confusing error message

2012-09-06 Thread Paul Abrahams
I don't have a problem in resolving that hostname in any other context.
For instance:

pwa@pwa-K60IJ:~/Documents$ ping subkeys.pgp.net
PING subkeys.pgp.net (116.240.198.71) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from web-196-keysigning.ivt.com.au (116.240.198.71): icmp_req=1 ttl=46
time=255 ms
64 bytes from web-196-keysigning.ivt.com.au (116.240.198.71): icmp_req=2 ttl=46
time=254 ms

And I can bring up a page with the URL also.

So if there's an iptables/urw problem, it's very particular to this
context. Others have also reported this problem, though most of them
have resolved it. It seemed to be related to the use of a proxy server,
but I'm not using one. as System Settings verifies.

What log should I look at for further information? It will be quite
difficult for anyone from the iptables world to track this down if it
only occurs in this one context.

[Bug 1044156] Re: gpg key retrieval gives bogus, confusing error message

2012-09-05 Thread Paul Abrahams
I installed gnupg-curl, tried the command again with the options you
suggested, and got this:

I just discovered that if I replace the hostname by its IP address, the
retrieval works. I'm reporting that as a separate bug.

[Bug 1044851] [NEW] gpg key retrieval can't resolve hostname

2012-09-01 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

In my environment, the following doesn't work:

pwa@pwa-K60IJ:~/Documents$ gpg --keyserver hkp://subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys
A8AA1FAA3F055C03
gpg: requesting key 3F055C03 from hkp server subkeys.pgp.net
?: subkeys.pgp.net: Host not found
gpgkeys: HTTP fetch error 7: couldn't connect: Success
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
gpg: Total number processed: 0

But if I replace the hostname by its IP address, it does work.

I'm running Kubuntu 12.04. and gpg 1.4.11. The command cited above seems
to work for most people, but it doesn't work for me.

[Bug 1044156] [NEW] gpg key retrieval gives bogus, confusing error message

2012-08-30 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

I attempted to install a key using gpg as follows:

pwa@pwa-K60IJ:~/Documents$ gpg --keyserver hkp://subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys
A8AA1FAA3F055C03
gpg: requesting key 3F055C03 from hkp server subkeys.pgp.net
?: subkeys.pgp.net: Host not found
gpgkeys: HTTP fetch error 7: couldn't connect: Success
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
gpg: Total number processed: 0

I don't know why I got this error (I'm not behind a proxy server), but
that's not the point of my filing this bug report. Whatever the problem
is, it's not a case of host not found. The host is there and I can
link to it. The error message is clearly bogus, and very misleading.
It needs to reflect what the problem really is.

I'm running Kubuntu 12.04. and gpg 1.4.11. The command cited above
seems to work for most people, but it doesn't work for me.

PS - I attempted to file this report under package gpg, but got a
message that gpg does not exist in ubuntu. Yet gpg shows up under the
package name search in the bug reporter.

At the moment I have the dropbox package installed and the nautilus-dropbox
package is not installed -- the same configuration as on the other machine
where Dropbox works properly. Synaptic was perfectly happy to install
nautilus-dropbox earlier (before I did the download); the problem was that the
resulting dropbox didn't work.

Since there is a perfectly usable version of Dropbox around, I would
suggest the following to Dropbox:

1. Fix the published command-line procedure so that it works. Given
that the download works, that ought to be possible.

2. Send a repaired version of nautilus-dropbox to Ubuntu.

But I wonder if the debi installer works some magic that can't be
achieved from the command line.

It seems to work, although it needs to be started with dropbox -i

2012-08-07 Thread Paul Abrahams
I'm a Dropbox user. Dropbox worked fine for me under 11.10; on this
machine it does not work under 12.04. I tried the procedure recommended
by Dropbox:

cd ~ wget -O - https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86_64; | tar xzf -
~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd

And I soon got this:

pwa@pwa-K60IJ:~$ dropbox start -i
Starting Dropbox...

more? Head to http://www.dropbox.com/

The installation of Dropbox failed.

Is this a Ubuntu bug or a Dropbox bug? I have no way of knowing, and
from the earlier comments in this bug I conclude that there's no
agreement about that.

Meanwhile I struggle.

[Bug 909488] Re: nautilus-dropbox forbids dropbox's non-free binaries to replace themselves by properly installing dropbox system-wide

2012-08-07 Thread Paul Abrahams
Update: I've gotten Dropbox working by downloading it from the website
and using the Deb installer (which, conveniently, is offered by
default).

So the situation is this, it seems. There are three possible ways to
install Dropbox:

1. Download it from the Dropbox website and install it with the Deb installer.
2. Follow the procedure recommended on the Dropbox website.
3. Install nautilus-dropbox using Synaptic or another Ubuntu package installer.

All three of these are plausible, but only the first one yields a
working Dropbox (for me, at least).

[Bug 736533] Re: gpg gives bogus, misleading error message

2012-08-03 Thread Paul Abrahams
I've encountered this bug again under Precise. What confuses the issue
greatly is that it's environment-dependent in an unknown way. In many
posts the recommended way to deal with a missing public key is this:

gpg --keyserver pgpkeys.mit.edu --recv-key A8AA1FAA3F055C03

with the key shown here replaced by the troublesome one. For many
people it works -- for me it does not. Apparently it doesn't work if
you're calling gpg from behind a proxy server -- but I'm not. There's
also an issue about gpg using the nonstandard port 11371 rather than
port 80, but when I opened the port explicitly the problem did not go
away.

I've seen this behavior on two different machines, although the HTTP
code has been different -- either 6 or 7.

[Bug 958080] [NEW] Double login needed after logout

2012-03-17 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

I'm running Kubuntu Oneiric 11.10 with KDE 4.8.1. If I log out and log
in again, after a minute or so the screen goes blank and then another
login prompt appears. The second login works correctly. This does not
happen on the initial login.

When this most recently happened, I went into a virtual terminal and
captured the last interesting part of syslog. Here it is:

[Bug 339563] Re: Unable to mount Canon cameras via USB (Jaunty)

2012-03-03 Thread Paul Abrahams
Same problem here. I've plugged in a Canon A10 Powershot. lsusb sees it and
so does gphoto -l:
pwa@pwa-K60IJ:~$ gphoto2 -l
Detected a 'Canon:PowerShot A10'.
There are 2 folders in folder '/'.
 - DCIM
 - MISC
There are 2 folders in folder '/DCIM'.
 - 132CANON
 - CANONMSC
There are 0 folders in folder '/DCIM/132CANON'.
There are 0 folders in folder '/DCIM/CANONMSC'.
There are 0 folders in folder '/MISC'.
pwa@pwa-K60IJ:~$ ls /DCIM
ls: cannot access /DCIM: No such file or directory

However, the Device Notifier says No Devices Available. digikam
autodetects the camera but then shows no files when I try to import from
it. I can't find the DCIM folder. It's certainly not at the specific
location /DCIM.

As an experiment I created a folder /DCIM with universal permissions. Having
done that, the message from gphoto2 -l changed:
pwa@pwa-K60IJ:~$ gphoto2 -l
There are 0 folders in folder '/'.
Something is quite wrong here, and apparently the problem has been there for
years.

[Bug 911395] [NEW] pulseaudio volume control doesn't show actual volume

2012-01-03 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

The controls in the pulseaudio volume control do the right thing -- but
recently the display of the actual volume was lost. The bar is still
there but no volume is shown. I'm running a fully updated Kubuntu
Oneiric 11.10 system with version 0.99.1-0ubuntu1 of pavucontrol. This
used to work correctly.

[Bug 886809] [NEW] Laptop speakers don't mute when headphones plugged in

2011-11-06 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

On my Asus K60IJ laptop with the Intel 82801 audio controller, I cannot
get the laptop speakers to mute without also muting the headphones.
This problem was SOLVED under Natty by the packages in the ubuntu-audio-
dev repository, but that repository hasn't been updated for Oneiric.
Updating the repository is one solution, but a better one would be to
incorporate those corrections in the main line of code.

[Bug 886254] [NEW] HP LaserJet 5 printer driver works incorrectly

2011-11-04 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

I have an HP LaserJet 5 printer with the Postscript option and a
duplexing unit. Under Kubuntu 11.10 (and a couple of versions back),
the None option for duplexing doesn't work; I still get two-sided
printing. This is not a printer problem -- the printer works correctly
not only under Windows but also under OpenSuSE 11.3. There are several
possibilities for specifying printer and driver:

HP LaserJet 5 - CUPS + Gutenprint v5.2.7
HP LasetJet 5 MP - CUPS + Gutenprint v5.2.7
HP LaserJet 5 MP - Foomatic/Postscript

I have tried them all and they all have the same problem. In addition,
some print jobs just hang up and don't print at all.

This problem showed up a few months ago. Before that, printing with
this printer worked properly.

[Bug 804964] [NEW] Mounting a CD does not use the information in Device Actions

2011-07-02 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

Apparently the information in System Settings / Device Actions is not
being used. I verified that by changing the name of the Amarok action
to something else, and the change did not show up. I believe this

[Bug 780482] [NEW] Erratic connection to Sansa Clip+ with mtpfs

2011-05-10 Thread Paul Abrahams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mtpfs

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. I have mtpfs 0.9-3 installed.
When I try to connect my Sansa Clip+ music player to my laptop using
mtpfs, I usually get the message Transport endpoint is not connected
-- but not always. This is the same message I get if the device is
actually not connected (via a USB port). Under 10.10 the connection
under these circumstances was quite reliable.

Sometimes when I get a connection, I lose it and get that same message.
I'd say that I succeed in connecting about 10% of the time, with no
obvious explanation of why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
Since I didn't have the problem under 10.10, I doubt if it's really
caused by bad hardware.

[Bug 774289] Re: No notification of Natty upgrade

2011-05-01 Thread Paul Abrahams
I do get notification of updates. I checked that by reverting a package
(khelpcenter4) to an earlier version. I then got a notification that it
needed to be updated, which is of course the correct effect.

I'm about ready to bypass the problem by downloading the Alternate
Distribution CD and installing from there. But there has to be a bug
here that will bite others sooner or later.

How can I learn about the mechanism by which distribution upgrades are
detected and the notification issued?

[Bug 774289] Re: No notification of Natty upgrade

2011-05-01 Thread Paul Abrahams
I had three systems running Kubuntu Maverick: one in a second partition
on the same system as the one I was working with, and another on a
different machine entirely. And none of the three got the notification
or could pick up the upgrade with do-release-upgrade, which leads me to
believe that the problem might not be in my systems at all.

I've bypassed the whole problem by using the Alternate CD, and with that
everything went smoothly, including retrieval of packages from the Net.
The only bump in tne road was the problem with samba4, which I'm sure
you know about, since it generated a boatful of duplicate bug reports.
It ought to be fixed quickly, if for no other reason than to stop the
deluge of bug reports.
