I have got an Optiplex 760 and since upgrading to 11.04 (from 10.04)

I also am experiencing white noise at a constant volume except when the volume
is muted.
I have tried changing PCM settings using alsa-mixer but this did not work.
The problem can be replicated by simply booting the 64bit Ubuntu 11.04

A little update from me: Mixxx 1.8.1 works fine the past two weeks.
After the freeze, i went into my bios settings and everything was
screwed big time. After fixing that, my computer doesn't freeze anymore
even if mixxx runs with compiz. Just the normal misbehaves.

I added this to the One Hundred Paper Cuts project. We've been
struggling with this bug for almost 4 years now! Even if it is an Alsa
bug, there has to be some sort of fix that the Ubuntu guys could
implement. Having to manually enter commands or run scripts every time
you switch audio sources
I see that you don't think it is important, which I can understand.
Perhaps not too many people are using SPDIF (I have no idea of the
number/percent).
But I do think it is a big usability bug for the people who try to use
SPDIF. It was not added just because it was longstanding; you go from
Wheel-based switching should be disabled by default. Most new users
will move the mouse out of their way when browsing the web, but when
they start to scroll down the page, they switch workspaces instead.
It's a very disconcerting behavior and they won't know where their
work/windows went.

After upgrading to 10.04 the graphics during boot are corrupted. They
show up but are unreadable. The rest used to work, but started crashing
after suspend recently. If I reboot then the garbled graphics show up
(you can make out the lines and the Ubuntu logo, but you can't
