No sound at all following installation of Kubuntu 11.10

Fixed.
Removed, re-installed Pulse Audio, which got the sound output working.
Sound recording using Gnome sound recorder still failed, but works OK
with Audacity, so I'll settle for that.
Maybe when installing Sound recorder on a KDE system there is a missing
Gnome dependency? My previous

I haven't upgrade this machine to maverick yet, but at some point the bug
disappeared, possibly following an update. Can't be sure, I just noticed it
happened happened for a while.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04, but then added KDE4 because I write Linux
pieces for mags/websites and need screenshots of both.
I can set Kmail as the default mail client via System Preferences

I have tested live DVD and installed versions of Kubuntu 14.10, both 32
bit and 64 bit on a PC with Realtek GbE LAN chipset RTL 8111/8168/8411.
Using the 64bit versions networking is not available. Using the 32 bit
versions it 'just works'.

Me too. I haven't checked every line above, but similar symptoms. Plasma
appeared to work OK at first, but Kontact failed with error message
about Akonadi. Then Plasma crashed and will not restart despite reboots.
had to install LXDE from terminal to continue using machine.

I was running Firefox and Kontact, possibly Dolphin, nothing else.
Plasma suddenly crashed leaving the apps on a black screen. Switching to
another terminal, killing TTY7 deleting ~/.cache and rebooting seems to
have fixed it for now.
