[Bug 229703] Re: Fails to install

2008-06-14 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
I confirm the problem with versions
0.3.1-4 (hardy)
and 0.3.1-4ubuntu0.1 (hardy-updates).
I cannot retrieve version 0.3.1-5, neither from hardy-updates nor
hardy-proposed. 0.3.1-4ubuntu0.1 is the latest I get from both.
Is this the fixed version? if so, it does NOT fix the problem.

disappear completely after pressing save, or they are created as non-

[Bug 500520] [NEW] Some essential services are not started

2009-12-26 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: upstart

Since a few weeks ago, some essential services are no longer started at bootup.
I noticed that the following (and probably many more) services are not running
after a reboot:
- cupsd
- sshd
- atd
- ...?

They can be manually started using service or start/stop, but they
are not started automatically at boot time. This means, I cannot connect
to my box after a reboot, because sshd is not running, and my scheduled
jobs don't run, because atd isn't there, etc.

Those services have worked reliably in the past, and I don't know what
actually happened. I suspect that it's related to upstart, but I'm not
sure. It looks a rather general problem to me, as it seems to affect a
lot of services.

2009-12-29 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Thank you Heineken. Downgrading to upstart 0.6.3-10 solved the issue for me,
too.
It looks as if the changes made in 0.6.3-11 (wait until the loopback device is
up?) keep upstart from working properly on some systems.
There are several reports of this issue on the forum.

[Bug 501403] [NEW] xfce power manager does not allow to set up power profile on a desktop system

2009-12-29 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-power-manager

On a freshly installed Xubuntu desktop system (no laptop!), Xfce power
manager settings will not allow to set up a power profile.

As is to be expected for a desktop system, power manager settings only shows
one profile called On AC. However, the Actions tab of this profile is just
empty. No actions can be set, and the idle machine never suspends or hibernates.
(The Monitor tab works, just the Actions tab is empty.)

Public bug reported:

Frequenty, at jobs (one-time jobs) scheduled with gnome-schedule do
not start at the scheduled time, but several minutes too late. Today, I

[Bug 279187] Re: regression: usplash causes system to beep aloud

2009-10-01 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
I have the same problem on a Thinkpad T61 (nvidia driver intel sound card).
It appears irregularly during bootup. It can be very distressing when you boot
your laptop in a public place, e.g. a train.
I noticed that the problem seemed to be fixed with the 2.6.28-14 kernel, and
has reappeared with the update to 2.6.28-15.

[Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup

2012-02-22 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Hello Alkis,
in what sense does this bug no longer affect ltsp? I still have massive GPU
lockups with the intel driver on our ltsp clients. This is a huge problem for
us.
Lockups do happen in almost every session, markedly when scrolling windows. The
session freezes for some seconds, then windows contents appear scrambled with
old content not erased and new content printed over it.

This problem does not seem to occur on a standalone system, but it does
in ltsp sessions.

So please: this DOES affect ltsp.

[Bug 885204] Re: Recommending proprietary driver on hybrid systems can break 3D

2012-02-22 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Well done!
But this is rather a bug on th side of the nvidia driver. It's not so unusual
to have several X drivers installed. Another example besides systems with two
graphics cards is a (real) X client/server setup:

Say you have (like us) a server and several different thin clients
making X connections across the network, the server needs to have the X
drivers for all the graphics cards of the different clients installed
(at least if you want to have graphics acceleration via GLX). Now, if
one of the clients happens to have an nvidia card, the server needs to
run the nvidia X server to get acceleration for this client. This breaks
acceleration for all clients with other graphics cards.

This is a huge problem in, for example, the Linux Terminal Server
Project (LTSP).

Since the real cause is the broken nvidia driver, is there any chance of
asking the guys at NVidia to fix this?

[Bug 938792] Re: starting gparted with pkexec fails

2012-02-23 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Indeed, there is! Thank you for pointing this out.

My home directory is mounted via nfs. For security reasons, nfs by default does
not allow root access to the exported shares -- when root tries to write to a
nfs share, the user and group is changed to nobody:nogroup. (This is called
root squashing)
Apparently pkexec tries to write to my home directory as the root user, and
this fails, since nfs changes the user to nobody, who cannot write to my home.

Solution:
When I turn off this security feature and allow root access via nfs, everything
works fine.

Still I wonder why pkexec tries to write to my home as root? Do you know what
it's trying to do?
Anyway. this may well by an issue of policykit, not gparted at all.

[Bug 838091] Re: should link fsck.ntfs - ntfsfix/ntfsck

2011-10-15 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
1) This problem will affect all users that have ntfs checks requested in
their fstab after upgrading to oneiric. These are supposedly *very
many*.

2) The real problem is not that the check fails, but that oneiric's
startup screen FALSELY reports that there were serious problems
mounting the drives. The screen should report that the drives could not
be checked since no program to do this was available. The message as it
is will badly scare users, since the must assume that their data is
damaged, which, most likely, is not the case.

3) Not requesting the check will of course avoid this bug. But since
users could safely request checking in fstab up to natty without
receiving any errors, we must assume that checks *are* requested for
ntfs drives.

4) This is a show stopper for oneiric.

[Bug 803161] [NEW] natty: suspend on a Thinkpad T61 does not succeed but breaks network manager and docky

2011-06-28 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

Since a few weeks, suspending my Thinpad T61 does not succeed any longer (it
did before!). Instead, the computer keeps running, but the active network
connection is terminated and cannot be resumed. Moreover, docky breaks and
cannot be restarted. There seem to be several more issues connected to the file
manager (nautilus) not working,
This looks as if there was a common cause to all that, but I can't find it.

[Bug 803917] Re: Do not appear in Startup Applications

2011-10-16 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Here are some examples:

1) Login sound. Many users want to turn it off.

2) Guest accounts or dedicated accounts. For example, I use a dedicated account
to play music. It's a restricted account with no password, everyone can use it
to play music. This account shall never
 - log into Ubuntu One or even try to (ubuntuone-launch.desktop)
 - display update notifications (update-notifier.desktop)
 - search for drivers (jockey-gtk.desktop)
 - do any social networking (gwibber.desktop, telepathy-indicator.desktop)

[Bug 875663] [NEW] nm-indicator and network settings contradict

2011-10-16 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

After update to oneiric, my computer stopped autoconnecting to the wired
network. I checked that Network enabled was checked in the nm-indicator.
Still no autoconnect.
It took me one day to find out that there now is a Network icon in the system
settings tool. This is new. It has an on/off-switch. The switch was set to
off. Turning it on fixed the autoconnect.

1) why is the switch off by default?
2) why tells nm-indicator Networking enabled, when at the same time the
Network system setting is set to off?

More generally: Why can there be two places to do the same thing in
Ubuntu, and why can they contradict?

Users will be stuck with completely unresponsive Ubuntu systems until oneiric

[Bug 964016] [NEW] orca/gnome-mag fails miserably as a screen magnifier in ubuntu

2012-03-24 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Oneiric, either Unity or Unity-2d:

Trying to find a decent screen magnifier (note: there is none), I came
accross the tool claiming to be Ubuntu's default magnifier: orca.

BEHAVIOUR:

1. Enabling Zoom in Ubuntus Universal Access system dialog does: nothing.
2. typing orca --enable=magnifier in a terminal (as documented in the man
page) does: nothing.
3. Installing package gnome-mag and typing magnifier in a terminal does:
nothing.
4. Installing package gnome-mag and typing magnifier --vertical/horizontal
leaves screen completely unusable

Bottom line: orca and gnome-mag shall provide universal acces, but not
even me as a fully capable human being can get them to work. How shall a
visually impaired person ever get them to work?

EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR:

I can activate a working screen magnifier with at most three simple
clicks.

BOTTOM LINE:

Ubuntu claims to be software for human beings. Gnome has usability
guidelines. Both is not met in Oneiric.

[Bug 964026] [NEW] kmag options window, focus and screen non functional

2012-03-24 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Oneiric.

The only way I can get kmag to work is with option Mouse (note: that's
working very well). Any other option is unusable:
- option Screen does nothing at all
- option Focus does *not* show the window having the focus. Only the
magnified title bar is correctly updated, the rest of the magnified area shows
the contents of always the same window, no matter which has focus.
- with option Window the window outlining the screen portion to magnify is
*restricted to the magnifier window itself*. This is complete nonsense: I need
to specify the area to magnify *outside* the magnifier window.

Bottom line:

kmag is unusable, unless you choose option Mouse.

  Ubuntu Oneiric.

The only way I can get kmag to work is with option Mouse (note: that's
working very well). Any other option is unusable:
  - option Screen does nothing at all
- - option Focus does *not* show the window having the focus. Only the
magnified title bar is correctly updated, the rest of the magnified are shows
the contents of always the same window, no matter which has focus.
+ - option Focus does *not* show the window having the focus. Only the
magnified title bar is correctly updated, the rest of the magnified area shows
the contents of always the same window, no matter which has focus.
  - option Window shows the window outlining the screen portion to magnify
*inside the magnifier window*. This is complete nonsense.

  Bottom line:

kmag is unusable, unless you choose option Mouse.

[Bug 949360] [NEW] No icon for USB drives on desktop or unity launcher

2012-03-07 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

When a user plugs a USB drive into an LTSP client, no icon appears on the
desktop or in the Unity launcher. The drive is shown in the sidebar of nautilus
windows, but users do not know they have to look there. They expect an icon to
appear. Most users give up immediately if nothing happens.
Having an icon appear will considerably improve usability in an everyday task.

Some problem with the intel iwl4965 driver. It occured with one of the last
updates.
Disabling N with sudo modprobe iwl4965 11n_disable=1 solves the problem.
I don't even have an N-capable router.

[Bug 966164] [NEW] testdrive-gtk with option virtualbox fails fails because pae is not enabled

2012-03-27 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

Running the current cd image of Precise fails, when virtual box is
selected as the virtualization engine. The message says, that the
virtual CPU does not support pae (physical address extension), but the

obviously testdrive does not enable it.

[Bug 966162] [NEW] testdrive-gtk with option virtualbox fails if virtualbox is not installed

2012-03-27 Thread Rüdiger Kupper

WHAT HAPPENS:
In testdrive-gtk, if I choose virtualbox as the virtualization engibe,
testdrive does not check, if virtual box is actually installed. It just fails,
unless I instell virtual box manually.

WHAT I EXPECT:
testdrive checks if virtual box is installed and installs the package, if not.

[Bug 839019] Re: wifi module rtl8180 freezes the system

2012-03-27 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Dear Christopher,
this problem persists with Ubuntu Precise beta 1:

WHAT HAPPENS:
With my WLAN card (RTL 8185L chip) stuck into my machine, Ubuntu's boot precess
freezes. I need to pyhsically power off my machine (not even SysRq-Keys do
work).

WHAT I EXPECT:
Ubuntu boots up normally and I can use my WLAN card. If my card is not
supported, Ubuntu still boots up normally, but not WLAN is availabe.

[Bug 839019] Re: wifi module rtl8180 freezes the system

2012-03-27 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
apport information

** Tags added: oneiric running-unity

** Description changed:

Re-opening this bug. Original bug was filed against Ubuntu 8.10, but is still
present in Natty.
  Original Bug: bug #368679.

  Description:
On computers with some rtl818x chip based wifi cards, when module rtl8180 is
modprobed this causes a complete freeze of the system.

This issue is severe for two reasons:
  * computers with such wifi cards aren't able to connect to their network via
wifi through a native linux driver;
  * because rtl8180 is modprobed at startup, when a new user tries Ubuntu on
such computer, the liveCD will show a black screen without any error message,
and then the user will blame Ubuntu.

Affected Ubuntu releases: Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic, Natty

  Affected wifi cards (examples):
  * MSI PC54G3 III (chipset RTL8185L)
  * Zyxel G-302 V3

  Workarounds:
  * ndiswrapper:
  * works on Intrepid and Natty but not on Jaunty
  * manual install of Realtek's supported driver:
  * status unknown

[Bug 839019] Re: wifi module rtl8180 freezes the system

2012-03-27 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
The problem persists with the latest upstream kernel.

** Description changed:

- Re-opening this bug. Original bug was filed against Ubuntu 8.10, but is still
present in Natty.
+ Re-opening this bug. Original bug was filed against Ubuntu 8.10, but is still
present in Natty, Oneiric, and Precise beta 1.
  Original Bug: bug #368679.

  Description:
On computers with some rtl818x chip based wifi cards, when module rtl8180 is
modprobed this causes a complete freeze of the system.

This issue is severe for two reasons:
  * computers with such wifi cards aren't able to connect to their network via
wifi through a native linux driver;
  * because rtl8180 is modprobed at startup, when a new user tries Ubuntu on
such computer, the liveCD will show a black screen without any error message,
and then the user will blame Ubuntu.

- Affected Ubuntu releases: Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic, Natty
+ Affected Ubuntu releases: Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic, Natty, Oneiric,
+ Precise beta 1

  Affected wifi cards (examples):
  * MSI PC54G3 III (chipset RTL8185L)
  * Zyxel G-302 V3

  Workarounds:
  * ndiswrapper:
  * works on Intrepid and Natty but not on Jaunty
  * manual install of Realtek's supported driver:
  * status unknown

[Bug 961488] [NEW] Brasero does not burn DAO when burning several copies

2012-03-21 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

When burning an audio CD, Brasero uses disc-at-once mode, i.e., there is
no gap between tracs. This works fine, unless after writing has
finished, you decide to burn additional copies (as the dialog asks):
Additional copies are then written in track-at-once mode, i.e., they
have gaps of 2 seconds between tracs.

Why does brasero use TAO für additional copies? Discs were not written
on the fly, so I'd expect that the additional copies feature uses the
same image as before? But obviously, it doesn't.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 936867] [NEW] Dropouts while listening to vorbis variable bit rate live stream

2012-02-20 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

When listening to vorbis variable bit rate live streams, after some
minutes, I frequently experience dropouts (short periods of silence). It
sounds just like buffer underruns. The banshee GUI displays Buffering:
0.0% all the time.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Listen to this live stream (by German radio station Deutschlandfunk, a
variable bit rate vorbis stream):

[Bug 528073] Re: blkid (sometimes?) hangs on extended partition if same device name existed before partitioning

2012-02-20 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
11.10

When calling update-grub (which is also called during upgrades of
kernel packages), the process hangs. In the table of processes, I see a
process called grub-mount trying to mount an ntfs partition. After
manually killing it, it proceeds to my next ntfs partition, and agin
hangs. After manually killing it again, it proceeds nicely with the rest
of my partitions (non-ntfs).

This looks as if grub-mount has difficulties mounting ntfs partitions.
This never happened before.
