[Bug 1946833] Re: Merge bind9 from Debian unstable for 22.04

2021-11-12 Thread Robie Basak
Note from Timo on ubuntu-server@:

Just a heads-up that the new version breaks bind-dyndb-ldap (again),
upstream has removed the api versioning information which the plugin
depends on, so please don't merge this until there's some understanding
on how b-d-l can be made to work with the new bind9.

I asked Steve about Xenial in #ubuntu-devel. Apart from the xenial-
updates vs. ESM question, I'm happy with it and ready to accept it. If
Steve confirms it's correct to land in xenial-updates, then I'll accept
it into xenial-proposed.

2021-11-05 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem,
rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete.

Specifically it looks like you have a misconfigured /etc/mysql/my.cnf.

If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers
to get help for this sort of problem here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it
helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem
specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

I think another area where things could go wrong is in regressing
clients that use older protocol versions that are currently working.
Could you add something to the Test Plan to do a smoke test in this area
please? I'm not sure how to do this comprehensively, but at least this
would confirm that we aren't breaking the entire world of older protocol
clients or similar.

[Bug 1832998] Please test proposed package

2021-11-03 Thread Robie Basak
Hello Michael, or anyone else affected,

Accepted pure-ftpd into bionic-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pure-
ftpd/1.0.46-1ubuntu18.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed

Please help us by testing this new package. See

to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-bionic. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at

advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in

OK, so you currently have nothing in your Test Plan to verify this part
of the changes you're proposing? Please either fix the Test Plan, or if
testing this is impractical for some reason then we can discuss that and
decide what mitigation might be appropriate, but in this case the
omission and conclusion should be documented in this bug - presumably in

I have verified with Miriam that the built debs are identical against
the debs currently in Jammy (both the set of debs produced and their

[Bug 1628591] Re: ifup & ifdown don't work for vlan devices when raw device name is the new "enp" convention

2021-10-28 Thread Robie Basak
Ubuntu focuses on netplan with systemd-networkd or Network Manager, and
ifupdown isn't really supported any more except for edge cases not
supported by netplan. Since vlan is supported by netplan, I'm therefore
marking this Won't Fix for the Ubuntu development release.

Note that ifupdown in Ubuntu barely differs from Debian now, so it seems
likely to me that there would be no difference in behaviour from Debian
here.

[Bug 1693122] Re: mongodb starts before network on VM and standalone

2021-10-28 Thread Robie Basak
We've seen this pattern being requested in many packages: normally a
network service dependency isn't needed because a service by default
doesn't bind to a specific address. If a user configures a service to
bind on a specific address, then often they also need to add the network
dependency locally. Otherwise the service will start before the network
interface is brought up and fail.

Policy discussion: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
devel/2021-May/041455.html

Other affected services:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.tag=network-online-
ordering

However, in the case of mongodb, Ubuntu no longer ships mongodb in its
latest releases, so there is no further action that can be taken on this
bug specifically. For the Ubuntu development release, I'm therefore
setting this bug to Won't Fix.

It seems unlikely to me that we'd make a change to an existing stable
release to add the service dependency, but that path remains potentially
open. Note though that a workaround is trivially available by overriding
the service configuration locally.

[Bug 1646886] Re: smartmontools does not use current notifier

2021-10-28 Thread Robie Basak
It looks like the current behaviour is by design: you won't get any
notification by default if you just install smartmontools unless you
also install a working mail system where you will receive emails to
root@ (eg. by following the Suggests metadata). smart-notifier is a
separate package which you can opt-in to using by installing it
directly. It is true that it won't be pulled in by default, but this
seems to be a design decision in smartmontools. If you need smart-
notifier's functionality, it's necessary to install it directly.

If there's a bug in smart-notifier then as Miriam says that's for
separate bugs to represent. For _this_ bug then, I don't think there's
any action to take so I'm marking it Won't Fix against the development
release.

If you disagree, feel free to comment and reopen this bug and we can
discuss further.

11:45 vorlon: could you take a look at bug 1916250 for me
please? I'm not sure it's right, but nor am I sure it's wrong.

14:29  rbasak: gir1.2-signon-2.0 exists in hirsute and later;
gir1.2-signon-1.0 exists in focal; we support upgrades from the LTS to
either the next LTS, or to the next supported non-LTS release. So there
are upgrade paths to hirsute now, and to impish once hirsute EOLs, so
yes it's correct to SRU this fix

17:00 vorlon: I agree it needs SRUing. My question is if a sole
unversioned Replaces is correct.

17:00 rbasak: ah, that should be fine

[Bug 1946096] Re: Support manual firmware upgrading for Foxconn and Quectel modems.

2021-10-27 Thread Robie Basak
>  3) Add a bunch of mappings from SIM->Carrier

> Assuming (3) is not expected to change existing behaviour this looks
like it would be acceptable under the hardware-enablement SRU policy.

Agreed, but I would expect SRU information against every change being
made, that would then receive separate SRU verification. This helps us
mitigate risk by 1) actually considering each change in the first place,
rather than it "slipping past" review; and 2) reducing the potential
number of SRUs, and therefore user time, bandwidth and regression risk,
by actually verifying that things are being changed as expected so we
don't have to do it twice.

I'm disappointed that this has now gone through two SRU review rounds,
and it is Chris who has extracted the actual nature of the changes that
you are looking to land here. This detail should have been laid out in
the bug (or multiple bugs) and in the SRU information in the first
place.

[Bug 1916250] Re: gir1.2-signon-2.0 needs to declare replace on older releases (Groovy2Hirsute and Focal2Jammy)

2021-10-27 Thread Robie Basak
I'm surprised to see Replaces without a Breaks, and further for the
Replaces to be unversioned. This doesn't match one of the cases listed
at https://wiki.debian.org/PackageTransition, and
https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-relationships.html#id11
explains why usually a Breaks is also required.

Since I'm not sure this is correct, I'm reluctant to accept it on
review. I'm not sure it's necessarily wrong, either. I'll ping Steve for
an opinion.

Thanks Dariusz.

Are you intending to fix gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons in Focal
also then, to restore the behaviour? If so, then shouldn't these be
uploaded together with a Breaks clause to make sure users get both at
the same time?

[Bug 1943587] Re: [Ethtool][TSN] Support frame preemption

2021-10-21 Thread Robie Basak
> These patches haven't been applied to upstream ethtool and the API
they are using has not been accepted in upstream Linux yet.

Thank you for flagging this.

It might nevertheless be appropriate to carry patches in Ubuntu in
advance of them landing upstream if there are Ubuntu development teams
committed to maintaining that delta - providing this kind of hardware
enablement being part of the point of Ubuntu. Of course this depends on
the cost of writing the delta and then maintaining it, etc. To make
progress, I'd expect to find an Ubuntu development team (kernel?)
committed to maintaining it.

According to the upstream bug, the change was necessary to work

risk integration issues with extensions, including the ones we ship by

mitigation integrated into the Test Plan?

[Bug 1898005] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT in st_bin_destroy: assertion failed: (priv->child == NULL) called from DesktopManager::_destroyDesktopIcons() [desktopManager.js:234]

2021-10-20 Thread Robie Basak
Hello Peter, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons into focal-proposed. The
package will build now and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-desktop-
icons/20.04.0-3~ubuntu20.04.4 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Bug 1946096] Re: Apply upstream patches to fix problems for Foxconn and Quectel modems.

2021-10-20 Thread Robie Basak
SRU review

I don't see any explanation of what this is fixing, or why this is
needed, so cannot review if the proposed changes qualify for an SRU
under Ubuntu's policies.

Specifically I need an explanation of actual user impact, not just "fix
some problems". Further, note that the procedure says "Do not create a
meta-bug with a title like "Please SRU this" rather than using existing
bug reports". We need actual public bugs for each of the specific
problems that you're fixing. Each of those bugs should be linked from
the changelog, so we can ensure during SRU verification that each of
those issues have individually been verified fixed. Done properly, there
is then no need for a meta bug like this one.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure for full
details on what is expected.

The Focal upload is also missing a proper bug reference - the reference
given doesn't match the standard pattern so didn't get copied to the
Launchpad-Bugs-Fixed header.

I'm rejecting both the Hirsute and Focal uploads since both uploads need
their changelogs fixing to properly reference public bugs that contain
full SRU information.

Using an alternate init system isn't supported on Ubuntu. We support
systemd only. Therefore I'm not sure this bug qualifies for an SRU.

Is there any case where a user using systemd would be affected by this
bug?

Given the triviality of the fix, maybe we can accept it anyway given
it's already uploaded. We can discuss that out of band. But if the
upload needs changing because of my comment in bug 1677684 anyway, maybe
we should just drop this fix in Bionic.

[Bug 1946599] Re: Firefox break when returning from console with wayland (nvidia) on ubuntu 21.10 beta

2021-10-11 Thread Robie Basak
I can reproduce this issue with this snap:

installed: 93.0-1 (631) 157MB -

In my case, it's standby/resume that triggers it. However Ctrl+Alt+F3
then Ctrl+Alt+F2 does also. I suggest that the broken standby/resume use
case makes this issue much more significant from a user impact
perspective.

Olivier's security.sandbox.content.read_path_whitelist workaround works
perfectly. Thank you!

Re: [Bug 1942699] Re: SRU: Update Telegram Desktop to 2.9.2

2021-10-10 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for looking after this package in Ubuntu!

On Sun, Oct 10, 2021 at 01:57:45PM -, Nicholas Guriev wrote:

"May" stop working? Will it, or won't it? I don't think it's appropriate
to speculatively update the package in a stable release unless you're
actually sure. If you do the necessary analysis and confirm that it will
actually break users in practice, that such breakage is to an
unacceptable level (eg. the package won't work at all for newly
registered users) _and_ that it's impractical to backport a fix, then I
think an SRU to a new version with the fix would be acceptable.

However, I don't think vague speculation about what _might_ break is
enough. Please figure out the detail and post a comment explaining the
detail. *If* my conditions above are clearly met from such an analysis,
then +1 for a major version update. However if a backport or patch is
practical, then that is preferable and I expect that instead. I don't
think it's acceptable to ignore that preference and jump straight to a
major version update without even looking. For example, why would a
trivial patch switching the type to a 64-bit one not be practical? I
will expect that to be explained first.

I'd also like to pre-empt the usual argument I see in this kind of
situation, which is "I prefer to maintain it this way because that's
easier/more tested upstream/whatever". While that may be true, the cost
is that users get disrupted as we break their expectations of a stable
release. We have made a choice as a project to ship and then patch
stable releases, and with that choice comes the acceptance of that
patching risk. Users who prefer the other side of the trade-off already
have that choice via the telegram-desktop snap.

[Bug 1945013] Re: mysql imposes a silent limit on passwords

2021-09-27 Thread Robie Basak
It might also be worth fixing debconf to reject any password that MySQL
will reject. But that can only be done if upstream have clear
documentation so that the debconf script can accurately predict that, so
this needs Sergio's point above addressed first before any progress can
be made in packaging.

[Bug 1942699] Re: SRU: Update Telegram Desktop to 2.9.2

2021-09-23 Thread Robie Basak
The SRU team discussed this between themselves on 9 September. We don't
think that "new features" are appropriate in telegram-desktop in stable
Ubuntu releases, and so this is not sufficient justification for an SRU
in itself. Users generally don't expect new features to appear in stable
Ubuntu releases, and we don't think an exception is appropriate here.

If you want to continuously ship the latest telegram-desktop features to
Ubuntu users, we think that snaps would be a more appropriate solution.
If you don't want to use snaps, then you might consider the backports
pocket - subject to requirements from the backporters team as they get
their process refined and restarted.

If, however, there are specific bugs that need fixing in telegram-
desktop in a stable release, or a specific change in the Telegram
protocol that results in regressed functionality for users, then we can
consider an SRU to fix that. If this is the case then such an SRU needs
to be justified on those merits.

I'm therefore going to set the stable tasks to Won't Fix and reject the
uploads. Feel free however to repurpose this bug to fix some specific
issue that is SRU-able - in which case please provide that justification
and then reopen the bug.

[Bug 1943564] Re: [SRU] Backport xrt 202020.2.8.743-0ubuntu1 to focal

2021-09-22 Thread Robie Basak
Please can you explain why you're backporting rather than cherry-picking
specific fixes here? If the diff is otherwise equivalent, why aren't you
still intending to individually verify the specific fixes you need, as
would be normal SRU process?

If you don't intend to verify each fix individually, then please explain
how the package complies with the requirements listed at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#New_upstream_microreleases

> Additionally, the packages for amd64 are not really tested and won't
be, so it is preferable to remove from the build.

This is not sufficient justification to remove a build from a stable
Ubuntu release. Many packages in Ubuntu aren't specifically tested, and
we don't routinely remove those.

> The package will disappear from amd64 arch, but anyway it was not
really working and it is preferable to remove it rather than leaving
people with a not working binary around.

Is it not working at all, or not "really" working but still effective
for some user? In what way doesn't it work?

[Bug 1913421] Re: Load of pre-upgrade qemu modules needs to avoid noexec

2021-09-09 Thread Robie Basak
One thought. From a quick test, it looks like I can mount a directory
tmpfs over and over again, building up the list of mounts. So if there's
some other reason the script can't execute in /run/qemu, every time the
postinst runs, we'd mount over it again. So maybe we should additionally
not mount if /run/qemu is already a mount point, based on findmnt?

So I suggest:

Testing if we can execute ("test the fact"), AND checking that /run/qemu
isn't already mounted, to stop us doing it multiple times, and only then
manually adding the mount.
