Very Disappointed that this key feature is not in Ubuntu

I tried Giuseppe Pantanetti's method (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and found that all I
needed to do was to log back in directly, no dbus restart necessary.

It has to do with the most recent updates. I formatted my SSD, re-
installed Ubuntu 10.04.0 and the audio was fine. Did the slew of most
recent updates and now my audio is gone again.

ok I take it back, there are definitely some jpeg artifacts in the
simple-scan color scan when I zoom in over 500%, but the file size
difference still seems quite dramatic.
still cannot produce a grayscale image that does not have this weird

I'm evaluating scanning programs for linux and xsane comes highly
recommended, but a typical color scan of a test document I'm using
generated a huge 17440k pdf vs. a 824k from simple-scan and visually I
am not seeing any difference. The grayscale scan was 5596k and seems

The audio on my laptop drops when I open a new application (or switch to
a different one). Sometimes it happens when switching tabs. It does not
matter which application is playing audio, the audio usually stops when
the application is switched.

I installed Hardy Beta 1 today and find that this problem is persisting.
No sound card has been identified. When I ran the lspci -v command the
