This is very stupid and I should have tried it before contributing to
this bug. I have been using a Belkin wireless adapter on Intrepid and
Jaunty with no issues so when I upgraded to Karmic and internet was slow
I didn't think it could be problem with the adapter support. Well, I'm
still not sure

Same problem with VLC. Even though I have asked for screensaver to be
inhibited it sitll comes up regardless of settings in VLC.

I have the same problem. Firefox, Thunderbird, Synaptic, etc are all
very slow and surprisingly disabling IPv6 in Firefox doesn't speed it up
either, contrary to what others are reporting.

Savvas, thanks for the explanation. I was kind of thinking that once a
package is prepared it can be made available for all previous Ubuntu
releases. Hence my question about karmic and jaunty; if it's packaged
for karmic then why not include it in jaunty repositories too.

I think this is caused by the open source ATI drivers. This is how I
managed to bypass the problem, if anyone else has the same issue:
Get a liveCd/LiveUSB and boot normally without any options. Let plymouth
do its work and once you get to the stage that the GPU is being reset
every few seconds
I have removed Iran keyboard layout and the error message has
disappeared but if I try to add it back I get the same message. I can
add almost any other layout that I want though! Could it be a bug in
Iran layout only?

Bryce, what happened was that I upgraded to Lucid from Karmic and things
were fine, I could boot and do my stuff. I then decided to format my
partition and do a fresh install of Lucid. That's were I had the problem
described above. Can you tell me how I can get a copy of 'dmesg' for
them? Can I

see the contents of 'dmesg' on the screen but I need a way to dump the
content into a file which can be saved on that USB and opened on a
properly working computer. Can you help with that? Is there any other

Ok, I found a way to do it.
Here's how I generated this file:
Booted from USB with quiet-splash removed from grub command line.
Dropped to terminal and mounted my main partition and saved 'dmesg' to
it with
dmesg /.../.../.../.../dmesg

I've had the same problem and after not getting anywhere with zanghi's
link I connected an old IDE writer in place of my current SATA writer
and everything seems to be fine. So at least on my machine the problem
is to do with SATA interface. Sorry if I'm repeating a known fact.

Ok, I solved my problem.
After seeing the above message (#93) I over-wrote the
/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ir file in my Lucid machine with one copied
over from a Karmic machine and the error message has gone away. I can
use both gb-en and ir layouts now! So the ir file in Lucid is
broken and
