This is very similar to a bug I posted (which may be a dupe), bug#
448292. All my tech details are there, but basically:
U727 works in Jaunty (after about 5 minutes after boot). It's seen in
Karmic, but never gives an option to connect.

donwstream from the strigi packages required that are all just sitting
in Intrepid-backports ie:

I tried recompiling the drivers as above but it didn't work for me on a
HP 1010NR. I may have been missing a step not in those instructions
though as install complained about not being able to install the
compiled deb because of pre-existing files. I used dpkg --force-all to

sound so far. Will try the other usual suggestions (alsa-base.conf) and

Good news! It's definitely narrowed down to the kernel version as after
adding the lines above to my alsa-base.conf sound works (after a couple
of reboots). This means that:
vanilla updated jaunty + 2.6.28 kernel = speaker sound doesn't work
vanilla updated jaunty + 2.6.29 kernel = speaker sound
It's still running 1.0.18. I didn't do the whole compile 1.0.19 thing
above.
Is there any way to get the broadcom wireless modules for 2.6.29?

OK, after talking with a few other people having this problem we managed
to figure this out. It is *not* FGLRX related, it's that somewhere along
the line a couple of days ago, automatic updates removed kdebase-
workspace-bin (and possibly some other needed files)! This happened on
both 32bit,

purge fglrx* and reset xorg.conf to it's vanilla install version and I
can now get to the KDM login screen with the ATI driver but I'm still
getting the exact same problem that the login progress screen with the

This isn't just a problem with UNR, there seems to be a lot of people on
the forums having this with HP Mini's running standard Ubuntu. I'm
getting this on an HP Mini 1010NR running Kubuntu Jaunty.

After upgrading, X and the KDM start fine, but when I enter my username
and pass the login progress box (with the spanner, blue sphere, hard
drive icon, desktop icon etc) never comes up. The cursor is there and
visible, but it just seems to hang other than that.

Oh, I forgot to mention, my video card is an ATI HD4850 running the
FGLRX packages from the repo's. (The new ones that work with Xserver
1.6)

This is working fine for me now on an up to date Jaunty. I do have a lot
of various packages installed on it though, so maybe I accidently got
the needed depenency.

Seems to have been some kind of funky permissions issue on the home
folder.
After seeing another error message I tried chown username:usersname -R
/home/username and that seemed to fix it. Not sure exactly what happened
to get the permissions out of whack though...

Still getting this today on Jaunty Dev with KDE 4.2 and KDEbase-workspace
