[Bug 1733557] Re: Login screen showing Authentication Failed Switch to greeter...

2017-12-13 Thread Stéphane Charette
Anyone know either the cause, or a solution?

If it helps, the two computers where I'm seeing this also happen to be
the two host computers where I run Virtualbox.

Just ran into this exact problem today in 16.10, so problem still
exists. Thanks, Reuben, your workaround in comment #3 got me back up
and running again.

[Bug 996916] Re: postgresql packages in the removal blacklist making it hard to upgrade

2016-07-25 Thread Stéphane Charette
>From a comment I left earlier this year on another bug ticket which is
now marked as a duplicate:

Finally figured out why upgrades to 16.04 are prevented on many of my
computers. The trick is to run this after a failed upgrade:

> cd /var/log/dist-upgrade/
> tail -100 main.log

In my case, this was the problem:

> 2016-06-09 15:48:07,039 DEBUG blacklist expr '^postgresql-.*[0-9]\.[0-9].*'
> matches 'postgresql-plperl-9.4'
> 2016-06-09 15:48:07,039 DEBUG The package 'postgresql-plperl-9.4' is marked
> for removal but it's in the removal blacklist
> 2016-06-09 15:48:12,070 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'The package
> 'postgresql-plperl-9.4' is marked for removal but it is in the removal
> blacklist.'
> 2016-06-09 15:48:12,071 DEBUG abort called

So the solution for me was to remove that package:

> sudo apt-get remove postgresql-plperl-9.4

However, even knowing this, I still think this bug is valid. The upgrade
process should provide more details when the upgrade refuses to run. For
example, it could have either shown the name of the offending package,
or perhaps even given me the option to remove it so the upgrade can
proceed.

[Bug 1582755] [NEW] Ubuntu prevents upgrading from 15.10 to 16.04

2016-05-17 Thread Stéphane Charette
Public bug reported:

Upgrade tells me it cannot upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04 due to one of
three possible situations, but it is sorely lacking in details to help
users track down the cause of the problem. All I see is the following:

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

I'm relatively certain that cause 1 and cause 2 don't apply. If the
problem is due to an unofficial software package, then it should name it
or perhaps have a switch to do-release-upgrade to ignore it.

[Bug 778051] Re: S/PDIF outputs are mute (optical and coax) by default

2012-12-27 Thread Stéphane Charette
Still regularly running into this in Ubuntu 12.10 with a Nvidia card.

 $ lspci | egrep Audio|VGA
00:08.0 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation MCP79 High Definition Audio (rev b1)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation ION VGA (rev b1)

Every time this ASRock device is rebooted, S/PDIF 1 defaults to mute.
Since this box is a media PC without a keyboard, it is a pain to hook
one up each time to open a terminal window and run alsamixer to unmute
S/PDIF 1. Is there a way to fix this, or a better workaround?

[Bug 281569] Re: package samba-common 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-11-05 Thread Stéphane Charette
Similar thing -- prompted for changes in smb.conf. The side-by-side
display of changes was useless since it doesn't use a monospace font.
When I chose the 3-way merge, the thing borked. The same text in my
upgrade terminal window.

This is during the Installing the upgrades portion. The progress bar
shows pretty close to 100%. Just below it is the text Installed
brltty-x11

The entire window is disabled/insensitive, so I cannot copy-paste the
tex in the terminal. But here is what I see:

samba-common
smbclient
ubuntu-desktop
smbfs
samba

As jean-Baptiste Lallement asked someone else, I'll attach a sanitized
version of my /var/log/daemon.log file. (I say sanitized because I'm
going to grep -v all references to openvpn, which spits out too many
details for my liking into this file.)

[Bug 195422] Re: hardy heron 8.04 alpha 5 - flash not installed correctly

2008-06-15 Thread Stéphane Charette
Tonight to try and get flash working again I uninstalled firefox,
firefox-3.0-gnome-support, firefox-gnome-support, ubufox, flashplugin-
nonfree, totem-mozilla, xulrunner-1.9, gnome-user-guide, ubuntu-desktop,
ubuntu-docs, xulrunner-1.9-gnome-support, and yelp. (Basically as soon
as you remove the first few, the rest have to be removed due to
dependencies.) Then I deleted my ~/.mozilla directory before I re-
installed all these packages.

Not certain what part of that solved the problem, but flash is now
working for me on my copy of Firefox 3.0 in Ubuntu 8.04-64bit.
