I upgraded to 10.4 today. During the upgrade, it repeatedly reported
that deskbar-applet crashed and created a deskbar-applet-bugreport.txt

Actually, I'm still using Tcl 8.4, not 8.5, but his second workaround

I don't think so. I don't think npm even uses Python any more. There are
still scripts in /usr/bin with #!/usr/bin/env on the shebang line, but
this issue in particular seems to have been overtaken by events.

I tried to upgrade to 17.04 and it started out okay, but then said
Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

Yup, that was it! I removed rabbitmq-server and then the upgrade worked
fine.
