Ow, right, now I see, it was another driver, the sound driver. This bug
is then probably a duplicate of one of the others. I thought I saw

It seems (not 100% confident yet) that this is fixed now. It might be
Ubuntu updates but I also changed video settings: I replaced agpgart
with NvAGP to get suspend/hibernate working. Maybe that also fixed this
issue since I haven't seen the low graphics mode warning about during 8
bootups now.
After reading a lot of comments on this 'bug', I found a way to fix it.
Suspend started working after changing the USB from +5V to +5VSB. I do
get a message about half the times that 1 application refused to freeze:

One further addition:
During boot up, I first get an X.org screen with the NVidia logo. After
that I see the boot messages in text mode for a short while. After that
I get the Low graphics mode message and when I Cancel that message
within a couple of seconds the next thing is KDM. So apparently
I 'fixed' it now by deleting ~/.kde/share/config/plasmarc
Put the old plasma-appletsrc back in place so I have my desktop back
with widgets etc. But still a strange thing that this could happen.

I have a laptop here too with Gutsy using a SiS5513 HDD controller. It
fails to boot using the 'default' kernel, 2.6.22-14.
My current workaround is to set 2.6.20 as the default kernel, which
still has the module, but I can hardly call that a proper solution. Why
has this driver been removed?
I have the exact same problem on the laptop I just installed Gutsy on...
Any fix available?
