after further testing, I realized that the problem was actually with the
sun.java6.plugin package. I uninstalled it (though I left sun-java6-bin
and -jre untouched, for other apps need it) and downgraded to
sun.java5.plugin. I have also uninstalled firefox-2 just to unclutter.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 for the 32-bit architecture and I've only tested
the bug on MP3 files. Renaming a file so as to remove the + solves
the problem.
I've attached a screenshot of the window that appears when I try to open
a file named O Teatro Mágico - Camarada d'água+.mp3. As

layout. The OS is in US-en, though.
VLC doesn't seem to have a problem with spaces, accents, hyphens, the
ç character or even some stranger characters like ? and {. And
the other players I have (Kaffeine, MPlayer, Rhythmbox and

I second that. Now it looks like the sync daemon is trying to load but it
just ends up crashing after a couple of seconds. But we're making progress,
a couple of days before the daemon would crash without notice, it was simply
vanishing from the running processes list of the sysmon.

because divisions and multiplications come before sums and subtractions

I just tried to reproduce it with a randomly-generated Lorem Ipsum text
with 99 lines and another random Lorem Ipsum paragraph to copy from
firefox directly into gedit and it saved correctly, no questions asked.
Would it be possible to attach the text files you were working on so we
can try again?

I've tried opening this playlist on my 36-bit computer and it freezes,
not for 5 or 10 or 20 seconds, but for much more than that. I just end
up killing it.
