This is affecting Kubuntu 11.10. It's pretty short sighted to assume
EVERYONE uses crappy firefox. I have made numerous symlinks to tryh and
appease this but it still thinks the default browser is not set.

Unity isn't a replacement for gnome, it isn't a desktop environment. Nor
is it a window manager. Unity runs on Gnome desktop and uses Compiz as
it's window manager. Unity is nothing but a shell. The bug is either
worded wrong or is a misplaced rant.

You could add theavailable package names from the default repos to a
text file which could be pulled down with apt-get update. The repo isn't
active but the system is aware they exist. The user can then be prompted
if s/he wishes to enable the repo and installation will be smooth. The

Sure but a natively installed OS will surely exhibit the same behaviour
so it needs testing on a true install first to see if it is really
virtualbox which is causing the issue

Fatrat uninstallation leaves the proxy defined in /etc/environment. This
kills web access as the system looks for a proxy which has now been
removed. After taking the lines out which were added by fatrat and
rebooting, web connection is ok.
Also make sure you have latest BIOS
