Title:
USB printer will not print after boot
A new kernel came down from Ubuntu - 3.13.0-48-generic #80-Ubuntu SMP
Thu Mar 12 11:16:15 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux the other
day so I've been running it. It ran for 3d 6h 07m before locking up at
21:26:56 on 26 March 2015. This time there was no sign of the
'Hangcheck.' error
And again this happens less than 24hrs later still with kernel
3.13.0-46-generic #76-Ubuntu SMP Thu Feb 26 18:52:13 UTC 2015 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. I was able to drop to a terminal with CTRL-
ALT-F1 this time as it locked up in Firefox.
Mar 2 07:35:38 localhost kernel: [71138.820009]
Attached is the kern.log showing four of the lockups and what happened
before and after them

Public bug reported:
After a reboot due to a kernel update my HP1020 printer is not
initialized. This is shown in my syslog:
Mar 4 15:32:42 localhost kernel: [ 178.196280] usblp 1-3.5:1.0: usblp0: USB
Bidirectional printer dev 5 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x2B17
Mar 4 15:32:42
I have no idea what source package to file this under. I've asked on the
#ubuntu-bubs IRC channel almost an hour ago and have received no reply.
All I can say that when the issue starts the kernel is referenced.

This is now getting into the realm of the absurd. No matter what kernel
version I run in the 3.13.* series the system will lockup after a day or
so with the above error. Today it locked up at 9:09am CST - Mar 1
09:09:00 localhost kernel: [182499.820012] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed]

Again another lockup this evening at 19:16:40, 20 Feb 2015. And again
the 'Hangcheck' error did not make itself known, what my syslog shows
for this time period before the CTRLALTF1 is:
Feb 20 19:17:01 localhost CRON[29189]: (root) CMD ( cd / run-parts
--report /etc/cron.hourly)

Christopher, maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree here. After booting
yesterday into the 4.0rc kernel without the printer working and then
back to the 3.13.0 kernel with the same result I booted this morning
into 3.13.0-46-generic #77-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 2 18:23:39 UTC 2015 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64
Although I'm still working on digesting the 'kernel bisection' I have
noticed several things. Firstly I've had four 'lockups' since 17 Jan,
none of which contain the [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR*
Hangcheck timer elapsed... render ring idle issue. Secondly since 14 Jan
when I went back from

System will periodically lockup with [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed]
*ERROR* Hangcheck timer
Christopher, some things of note:
1. I went a bit over two days on 4.0.0-04rc4-generic without a
lockup. I noticed that there was an rc5 out today. I installed and
booted into it, none of my extension settings from Gnome Tweak Tool
would take. At the same time 3.13.0-48-generic #80-Ubuntu
I have the same problem now with the video freezing while using Firefox
although the [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer
elapsed... render ring idle error is no longer present. Per request from
Chris Wilson on the Intel-Gfx mailing list I am running kernel
4.0.0-997-generic
I've had several video lockups since running the kernel and driver that
I mentioned in comment 72. I've been trying to figure out a way to get a
back trace. All I've been able to come up with so far is this from the
/var/log/kern.log tied to the latest lockup:
May 13 17:59:19 localhost kernel:

I'd actually forgotten about this bug report since the printer has been
working flawlessly for awhile. I went through your suggested steps for
the automatic install, which failed and the printer would not print. I
did get it working again by just removing it using the CUPS Web
Interface and
