I've double checked my conf, I can confirm I'm not using virtio but
standard Win 7 drivers. (please see my VM conf that I posted some time ago).
So it's not definitely a virtio-specific issue.

After more than a week of testing, I'm happy to announce that I've
solved this issue.
It was a matter of unstable clock, as many others have experienced.
The fix was easy, simply add two options to the kernel boot line:
clocksource=hpet and notsc.

that rhythmbox worked ok.
The hang was probably a broken internet connection, so the album

Actually installing the libdvdcss package, totem is able to play the
DVD. However, sound is not played correctly. With mplayer playing works
fine though.

Some more information.
During the hang, no key combination has any effect. No console can be
accessed through the usual Ctrl Alt F keys.
However, the system is not locked up. If I press the power button, it
shuts down nicely.
For a couple of seconds I can see a console with some messages.

2) log in into my gmail account

The mb31 model is the one I'm using with Karmic, and works good!
I'm still trying Lucid using the LiveCD, so I cannot try the alternative
module.
I'll certainly try it one I'll upgrade!
