[Bug 1052936] Re: Progress bar in "Progress" section has a hole in it

2016-05-06 Thread franco_bez
Since I upgraded to Xenial I have this problem in the system monitor and
the synaptic software center.

Only occurs in Ambiance, Radiance is OK

see one of the duplicates of this bug 1574452 for screenshots.

[Bug 1173478] Re: Regression: power on/off of external monitor not detected

2014-01-07 Thread franco_bez
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected reproducible single-occurrence trusty

** Description changed:

I switch the power of a connected monitor on and off, the state does not
  get detected.

When I switch the external monitor off, the system continues to think
there are two monitors connected. Sometimes it helps to push the button
detect monitors in the display setiings, or to hit the hardware button
that toggles trough the display states (internal-only, mirror screens,
external-only, extended screen) , on my machine it's the Fn-F5 key. But
sometimes this does not help at all. Even worse, when I put the laptop
in the docking-station with the external-monitor powered off, and the
cold-boot the laptop, X thinks that the external monitor were powered
on. As I have a laptop and two docking-stations, one at home the other
at work, with two different external monitors connected I could see a
really strange effect. Even with the monitor powered off I can see the
correct monitor information in the display settings dialog, so some how
the information is read from the powerless monitor. If connected and
turned on, the displays otherwise work normally, no screen corruption
of any kind. Just the state of the monitors is not correctly detected.
On Quantal using precisely the same hardware it worked as expected. On
external monitor on/off or dock/undock the display settings adjusted
themselves to the new situation without any manual interaction. I
verified this behavior also with a live USB Stick of raring-beta2.

It just worked with all Ubuntu Versions from Karmic up to Quantal, and
now using Raring it does no longer work.

I upgraded to saucy, and now the menus are OK :-)
At least for geany and keepnote the bug is fixed.

2013-09-06 Thread franco_bez
One of the recent updates has changed the situation on my machine to the better
:-)
Dock and Undock events are working again
Also Plug and Unplug events are working again

Only remaining regression is that Power On/Off events of the external
monitor are not recognised.

Hi Timo,
glad to hear it works for you.

On my machine the situation is still the same.
In the meantime I verified the bug to exist in the live usb of xbuntu and
lubuntu as well.

[Bug 1173474] Re: indicator-bluetooth shows wrong state after resume

2013-04-29 Thread franco_bez
Today I had one resume where the indicator-bluetooth correctly showed
bluetooth ON.
So it does NOT occur in 100% of the cases.
I put the machine to sleep again and woke it up again and the bug was there
again.
I made a screenshot to illustrate the effect.
In sytem settings you can see that bluetooth is turned ON, while the indicator
shows bluetooth OFF.

Ciao,
  Franco

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-04-27 Thread franco_bez
An other tought:

If the GNOME team refuses to fix this bug, why does Ubuntu still use gvfs for
samba shares?
Wouldn't it be easier to implement cifs in a way similar to pyNeighbourhood ?
I mean using cifs directly and not using the buggy gvfs-fuse GNOME software ?

It does not look very professional to newbie-users when a simple samba share
just does not work in Ubuntu.
I myself can easily work arround the problem, but my wife and my sister in law
they are lost.

It's getting really hard to confince people that Ubuntu is the better OS
when there are showstoppers like this bug.

I'm starting to get the impression that Ubuntu is on the way to copy
Microsoft's philosophy regarding bugs:
You have to keep the prooven to be stable bugs in the system. People might
get scared off when the bugs they rely on suddenly get fixed. ;-)

[Bug 1173474] [NEW] indicator-bluetooth shows wrong state after resume

2013-04-26 Thread franco_bez
Public bug reported:

After waking up my laptop from sleep indicator-bluetooth shows
bluetooth turned OFF, but the bluetooth mouse works just normal. So
bluetooth is actually turned ON and is working.

If I click the bluetooth ON/OFF button in the indicator twice, the indicator
shows the correct state again.
The first click on the button actually turns blutooth OFF, although it read
Turn ON, the second click then really turns bluetooth ON again.

It's quite annoying.

Ciao,
   Franco

[Bug 1173478] [NEW] Regression: power on/off and connect/disconnect of external monitor not detected

2013-04-26 Thread franco_bez
Public bug reported:

When I connect or disconnect an external monitor, or when I switch the
power of a connected monitor on and off, the state does not get
detected.

When I switch the external monitor off, or remove the laptop from the
docking-station, the system continues to think there are two monitors
connected.
Sometimes it helps to push the button detect monitors in the display
setiings, or to hit the hardware button that toggles trough the display states
(internal-only, mirror screens, external-only, extended screen) , on my machine
it's the Fn-F5 key.
But sometimes this does not help at all.
Even worse, when I put the laptop in the docking-station with the
external-monitor powered off, and the cold-boot the laptop, X thinks that the
external monitor were powered on.
As I have a laptop and two docking-stations, one at home the other at work,
with two different external monitors connected I could see a really strange
effect.
Even with the monitor powered off I can see the correct monitor information in
the display settings dialog, so some how the information is read from the
powerless monitor.

If connected and turned on, the displays otherwise work normally, no screen
corruption of any kind.
Just the state of the monitors is not correctly detected.

On Quantal using precisely the same harware it worked as expected.
On external monitor on/off or dock/undock the display settings adjusted
themselves to the new situation without any manual interaction.

I verfied this behaviour also with a live USB Stick of raring-beta2.

I'm not 100% sure whether this bug is to be located in the linux-kernel
or the X11 system.

It just worked with all Ubuntu Versions from Karmic up to Quantal, and
now using Raring it does no longer work.

  Franco

[Bug 1072109] [NEW] appmenu shows wrong content

2012-10-27 Thread franco_bez
Public bug reported:

When using the global-menu (I mean having indicator-appmenu installed)
the menu shows wrong item description in some programs.

100% reproductible

In KeepNote in the View Menu I have 4 entries called Open.

After having uninstalled indicator-appmenu (and also appmenu-qt,
appmenu-gtk, appmenu-gtk3) the menus are back to normal.

[Bug 929891] Re: Workspace switcher does not show everything in the second monitor (Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2)

2012-04-05 Thread franco_bez
On my Dual Monitor Setup on 12.04 LTS beta 2
the switcher shows up OK on the first Monitor (the smaller one), but on the
second Monitor, although there's enough space, the display is shifted to the
left so that you cannot see everything.

see attached image.

[Bug 925895] Re: Ambiance sub-menus light like Radiance after latest light-themes update.

2012-04-02 Thread franco_bez
I came to find this bug report because this mix of light and dark menus
seemed to be a bug to me.

Now I learned that this seems to be an intended design change - dark
menus from dark elements, light menus from light elements.

Anyway I personally do not like this. It still looks like a bug to me.

There should be a configuration option for this, so the user may chosse between
- Light menus only
- Dark menus only
- Light Menus from light elements, dark menus from dark elements

I feel that this is the only way to serve both fractions, those that
like the design change and want to keep it, and those who think it's a
bug and want their dark menus anywhere.

[Bug 889201] [NEW] Grammar of success message wrong

2011-11-11 Thread franco_bez
Public bug reported:

When I start my encrypted system and enter the passphrase, cryptsetup states
cryptsetup successfully

As successfully is an adverb, but there is no verb in the entire message I
consider it a typo.
IMHO it should either read
cryptsetup successfully finished
or
cryptsetup successful

On the other hand, as my system is configured for the german locale, and
most plymouth messages on my machine come in german language the message
should also be displayed in the german locale. But it is not.

[Bug 882801] [NEW] Using gdm instead of lightdm the change user indicator does not show up

2011-10-27 Thread franco_bez
Public bug reported:

On my 64bit oneiric machine, recently upgraded from natty, I try to use gdm
instead of lightdm.
It's working, but I noticed that after login there is no change user
indicator (the one with the user name) in the unity top-panel , just the clock
and then the logout/systemsettings indicator.

When unity is launched from lightdm the indicator shows up, just when
launched from gdm it's gone.

[Bug 872569] Re: Unable to open indicator menus unless clickmaintain and scroll over the menu

2011-10-15 Thread franco_bez
Same story here on oneirc 64bit with intel graphics.

Most of the time the indicator menus work as intended on the primary screen,
and the bug occurs on the secondary.
But, in rare cases I had the bug also on the primary screen.

Even worse when I try to open the menu using the keyboard (F10),
sometimes the keyboard and mouse gets almost functionless. You can no longer
enter Text, nor click with the mouse.
Only the ALT-PRINT-K helps.

A very nasty regression compared to natty.

Open Skype ( or an other application that uses the old notification area

Then the indicators on the 2nd screen shift.

[Bug 750481] Re: In a double monitor setup the Unity top panel in the second screen is cut at the right

2011-05-06 Thread franco_bez
The panel does not only get cut off on the right,
but if you work in a dual monitor setup, the indicator icons get shifted to the
right by a few pixel from time to time.
At first only the System-Indicator (Shutdown Menu) is off the screen, After a
few hours of continuous work i noticed that even the clock and mail indicators
were gone.
A few hours later all the indicators were gone.
When I hit F10 the Menus do appear, but the indicator-icons are still off the
screen.

Using the Control-Panel (Monitor - Settings) I switched off the second
Monitor - hit apply - and keep Settings, then switched the second
Monitor back on - hit apply -keep settings, the Indicators came back
where they should be - all of them.

But once again they kept on shifting to the right as I continued
working.

Very strange.

[Bug 753971] Re: Display garbled upon restoring original resolution or connecting external displays

2011-05-06 Thread franco_bez
Confirm the bug here on an Acer Travelmate 6292 (Santa Rosa Platform)
with Intel GMA using unity version 3.8.12-0ubuntu1.

Toggle through the Display States with the FN -Key (here FN-F5) really
weird things happen.

The Top-Panel is OK, then there is a black area some 50 Pixel high then the
Rest of the screen is OK again.
Opening an indicator menu I can only the the lower part of it, as the upper
part is below the black area.
The only way to get the normal screen back is to log out and log in again.

[Bug 381201] Re: snd-hda-intel powersave option and CLICK from speakers

2011-04-13 Thread franco_bez
I found that setting the Module-options

power_save=0
and
power_save_controller=N

in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

get's overwritten in Natty in the file:

/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/intel-audio-powersave

I changed the line

INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=${INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE:-true}
to
INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=false

Now Natty keeps the hda_intel adapter power_save settings as desired

I have found a workaround for this bug

running the following script gives me a nice look - even in nautilus

killall -s KILL gnome-settings-daemon
sleep 5

killall -s KILL nautilus

[Bug 733124] Re: Old icon theme

2011-03-18 Thread franco_bez
As I already said, the gnome-settings-daemon does not really crash - it
just stops working.

I made a little screencast to illustrate the problem

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXPw410azdI

In very, very, very rare cases (I had it twice in a month) gnome-
settings-daemon works properly .

And yes I update the Natty system regularily. So far it didn't help.

[Bug 733124] Re: Old icon theme

2011-03-13 Thread franco_bez
I have two virtual machines with natty on virtualbox.
Strange enough, although both have the same problem, only one of them has a
crash file in /var/crash.

Anyway, I try to follow your advice and file the new bug. (Currently I get an
error Please try again
Sorry, there was a problem connecting to the Launchpad server. )

Also I found that killing and restarting gnome-settings-daemon only
leads to a part success.

In Nautilus I still see the old icon theme with square buttons etc. .

The other applications use the Ambiance Theme. (see screenshot)

[Bug 733124] Re: Old icon theme

2011-03-12 Thread franco_bez
Thanks for the hint, Omer Akram.

I tested on my Natty installation in virtualbox 4.04.
gnome-settings-daemon is still running, but obviously not functioning well.

I copied the crash-file from /var/crash to my home directory, and then,
in a terminal window, I ran the following commands :

franco@natty:~$ ps ax |grep sett
 1325 ?Ssl0:01 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon
 1656 pts/0S+ 0:00 grep sett
franco@natty:~$ kill -KILL 1325
franco@natty:~$ gnome-settings-daemon

and this fixes the problem temporarily (for this gnome session).

(crash file attached)

[Bug 692392] Re: [Realtek ALC268] Recording problem on Acer Aspire One (ZG5)

2011-01-03 Thread franco_bez
This is a regression bug.

Using Jaunty Jackalope the internal Microphone worked as intended on the ZG5.
With Karmic I'm not sure.
Starting with Lucid Lynx the internal Microphone only works when the Volume of
one chanel is set to 0.

Anyway as the internal microphone actually is a MONO device it makes no
sense at all to have left and right channels, does it ?

Somehow the internal wireing of the alsa driver seems to anihilate the
volume of the microphone if both left and right channels are set to the
same level.

Additionally this bug seems to affect not only the Acer One ZG5, but
following some threads on the german ubuntuusers forum, the balance
bug is quite a common problem with intel-hda sound cards.

I would very much appreciate an option to the intel-hda module like
internal-mic-mono=1 that simply forces the left channel to 0 volume.
Wouldn't this be easy to do ?

As a workaround I'm currently using a script that sets the left volume to 0
I call this script in rc.local and additionally have created a menu entry so I
can easily call it when needed.

reset_mic.sh:

#! /bin/sh
/sbin/alsactl -f /etc/asound.state restore

-

asound.state:

state.Intel {
control.3 {

comment.range '0 - 2'
comment.dbmin 0

But ftp still has some problems.

- start a terminal and cd to the .gvfs/my_ftp_share directory
- then try the following

fra...@tm6292:~/.gvfs/FTP als franco auf 192.168.0.13/franco/test$ ls

fra...@tm6292:~/.gvfs/FTP als franco auf 192.168.0.13/franco/test$ cat

On smb shares the above testcase work as intended. I have had no
occasion to test WebDAV and ssh.

Today I also tested ftp connection with nautilus

I connected to my dreambox by entering ftp://192.168.0.13 in Nautilus'
adress bar then gave the appropriate username and password.

I can browse directories and open files. Also creating new files works
just fine

But when I try to edit a file and save it there is a timeout error and the file
gets truncated to 0 Bytes.
This happens every time - 100% reproductible.

once again the error occurs only when using kernel 2.6.35-22 , with
