Great, thanks for your feedback, Rogi.
Plynouth in my opinion is yust a fancy boot screen which is still in an
alpha stadium. Though Ubuntu team always points out it also does all
logging during boot process - that is the root cause of all that and
other troubles and you again did confirm that.

I was able to find a workaround with Lucid:
1. disable USB-Legacy Support in BIOS (probably not absolutely necessary)
2. boot Lucid with kernel parameter usbcore.autosuspend=-1
Se also bug #592780

[ASUS M2N-E SLI] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]
Here for completeness the detailled list of my (working) USB devices as
read with Lucid:
$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 03f0:0601 Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 6300c
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 046d:c404 Logitech, Inc. TrackMan Wheel
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 046d:c03d Logitech, Inc. M-BT96a Pilot Optical
Here the result:
with a PS/2 mouse attached and kernel parameter nousb all is fine. I
can suspend + resume as much as I like!
The same (PS/2 mouse), without nousb but no USB-devices attached, it
only works 1x and hangs on 2nd suspend.
With Hardy I did unload ohci-hcd module, which is no longer
Finally got it working:
1. In the BIOS disabled USB legacy support
2. Boot with kernel parameter usbcore.autosuspend=-1
This way Lucid suspends and resumes many times. Did not check whether
the BIOS settinng is absolutely necessary because my harddisk isn't made
for frequent spin-downs.
The
So, at least I found the root cause: the damned USB-subsystem!
Here I describe what I did and finally found how to confirm that:
Boot Lucid with the kernel parameter nousb

perform these steps)
cange to a console
Same here wit Lucid on same hardware ASUS M2N-E

I'm afraid, but such attitudes seem to be common in Ubuntu.
We had a similar case some time ago in Gusty, where 's2ram' binary was

I do not understand why such detailled information and logs are
required, as everybody having Lucid can easily confirm that module i2c-
core is neither available as module, nor compiled into the kernel (there
even is no option about it in the kernel configuration as supplied with
Lucid):

to be reminded by alarm, shut down the machine and booted some hours
later.
NO alarm message, nor any notification in the panel.
Seems nobody really is interested in fixing this bug in the ancient
No functionality has changed in the process.
That's a pity, suppressing just the message is cheating. You won't get
any further information to fix the real bug. And it definitely is a bug,
see here the kern.log from Hardy, where all works fine:
