Located the problem.
Video adapter is Riva 128. (Gateway 400c)
Riva 128 supports depths of 15 (not 16) and 24.
Xubuntu 10.04 uses nv driver which for some inexplicable reason sets color
depth to
16, which is 15 as implemented in the RIVA 128.
This color depth causes precisely this error with

They are not the same issue.
libmarble4 is for a KDE educational program.
This upgradedid not fail because a library for an education program
failed. It is more likely due to kernel-module-xorg-nvidia issues.
A subsequent attempt to install did not have the libmarble4 error.

Workaround:
1] Boot from CD; ubuntu live, knoppix ⋯, or similar.
2] Open terminal, logon as superuser
3] Verify UUID with blkid command
4] Mount partition with /boot
5] Edit /boot/grub/menu.lst replacing specious UUID with correct UUID
6] Shutdown and remove boot CD
6] Reboot system
