[Bug 145801] Re: sometimes doesn't detect main title - patch included
I can confirm that the patch works as advertised on Hardy. (Tested on one DVD with main title as title number 2.) (The compiled mplayer didn't do OSD properly, but I believe it simply didn't find the fonts because I didn't install the package.) Sam Brightman - thank you for the patch. One suggestion, if you feel like tinkering some more with this: If I do mplayer dvd://2, I get the following output: --clip-- Playing dvd://2. There are 6 titles on this DVD. There are 32 chapters in this DVD title. --clip-- (etc.) With your patch, if I do mplayer dvd://, I get this: --clip-- Playing dvd://. There are 6 titles on this DVD. There are 32 chapters in this DVD title. --clip-- (etc.) When requesting dvd://, could you modify the output so that the first line above would read, instead of Playing dvd://. e.g. Playing dvd:// - title N selected. (with N being the appropriate number) or if it makes any difference, by adding a new line like this: Playing dvd://. Selected title N. [Bug 150333] Re: Kubuntu does not have the same magic than Ubuntu
Terence Simpson: Different mediums are suited for different things, probably the reason no one has yet come up with the one killer communication medium. Indeed. And that's why we have video in telephones that can do textual communication etc. :-) Different mediums are also differently suited for different people. Harald Sitter: This is not that I disrespect the report or the work put into this bug, I also understand that usr wants this to be looking good and easy understandable, but 90% of the changes done to this bug are either moving stuff around or changing word order. Alright, thank you - I don't want to continue arguing about the relevance of the changes. Apologies for interfering. However, I'm glad this seems settled, and that hopefully a suitable and appropriate medium for status tracking - a blueprint or a wiki page - can now be found. [Bug 150333] Re: Kubuntu does not have the same magic than Ubuntu
Stop doing pointless description changes! I respectfully disagree. At least one usr cares about how Kubuntu performs compared to Ubuntu and how much love it gets compared to its counterpart enough to bother tracking the development, and I'm thankful for that. Yes, the spam is a bit annoying even if I can live with it, and in an ideal world the past two days' changes could've perhaps been done all in a bunch, but the changes as such aren't pointless. Also, after Intrepid and Jaunty, there's K. The K release would be a *really* good point to put some LOVE in Kubuntu with KDE 4 and polish it real good, and following on this *use the K name* to put some more marketing media buzz behind Kubuntu as well. (That said, I concur with Sokraates on this one: *Forcing* the user to focus on a password field (bug 55299) does *not* increase the magic / usability of KDE / Kubuntu. The user is fully capable of deciding on their own what they want to do, thank you.) -- Kubuntu does not have the same magic than Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/150333 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kubuntu-meta in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 150333] Re: Kubuntu does not have the same magic than Ubuntu
My apologies if you read that as provocative. For me it is a given that the developers *do* care, and because of this I respect and am grateful for the work that you do. Which is why I was a bit surprised by Harald Sitter's reaction. I think what users can contribute to the development of FOSS, including tracking bugs and feature requests, is also valuable (and shows that *also* users care), so I objected to the statement that what usr was doing was pointless. Yes, having a few more e-mails in the box more than the minimum necessary may be a bother, but hey, accidents happen and we don't live in an ideal world, so I wanted to urge for a bit more tolerance instead of the negation of usr's contribution implied by pointless. Respect goes both ways. [Bug 150333] Re: Kubuntu does not have the same magic than Ubuntu
Thanks for your response. I'm aware of the history, and I can understand handling the bug traffic does involve work, though there may be ways around it. However, if the issue is that this would be more suited to a wiki page, I think Harald Sitter could've said as much, instead of his exclamation above. The exclamation was in direct contrast to Martin Böhm's first comment above - Thank you for your feedback! ... Please stay with us and keep informing us about the features you would like to see in Kubuntu. I think that tracking Kubuntu's status in this manner (compared with Ubuntu) within the bug tracker is a useful exercise - individual bugs do sometimes get lost and abandoned in the mass, and this report helps by keeping the big picture updated. If the developers are going to disagree and say that elsewhere, like on the Kubuntu Todo wiki page you referenced, would be preferable, that's for you to decide. [Bug 223226] Re: Upgrade from kubuntu Dapper requires manual intervention and kdm shutdown
So why does it take six months to get a one-line change made to a single web page??? Hmm well, there's a limited number of eyes looking at bugs and of people fixing things, so patience is a virtue. You did mention you're impatient though. :-) Then again, it seems the fact that 'kdm' did require manual stopping wasn't actually expected. Perhaps there are other remedies for the issue that may allow dist-upgrades directly from X in the future also for Kubuntu? [Bug 223226] Re: Upgrade from kubuntu Dapper requires manual intervention and kdm shutdown
To be clear: For me, the issue with having to *shutdown* kdm *prior* to doing the upgrade is separate from the issue of configuring 'libpam0g'. I don't think I even had the dialog about libpam0g. What I did have, however, was that the dist-upgrade started, downloaded the package lists and calculated required changes, and at this point (before starting the actual upgrade), asked me stop kdm and try again. So I cancelled out, logged out of X and stopped kdm, and started the dist-upgrade process again. This time around it seemed to download (again) the same things, and calculate the required changes (again). But it managed to continue alright. In sum: In retrospect I cannot be sure if my issue with kdm is the same as the original submitter's issue with kdm. I assume yes, because the requirement to shutdown kdm was *unconditional* (as per the OP's has to be manually shut down before it can proceed), no options were given. [Bug 177074] Re: Adept should log its performed actions
I find it surprising that there appears to be NO log of the apt actions (visible if you click on Show Details in e.g. adept_updater) performed by Adept (Updater). They are not written to /var/log/apt/term.log, yet Adept doesn't store them anywhere either. I don't know if Adept (Updater) not throwing away the APT logs is a separate feature request or if this would cover it. However, for what a random user's opinion is worth, I'd support raising the importance to Medium - I think having decent logs is a pretty basic expectation for a package manager. (I just faced a (minor) packaging bug that exposed an Adept Updater bug, while upgrading Hardy with KDE 4.1 ppa packages, but since there's no log (and I fail to have photographic memory, plus the fact that Adept updater hides the details when you click away the error popup), it's pretty hard to track what the packaging bug was. [Bug 223226] Re: Upgrade from kubuntu Dapper requires manual intervention and kdm shutdown
Confirmed here for the kdm issue. That said, stopping kdm manually was a non-issue (for me), because the upgrader wouldn't get confused by being interrupted at this point and having to start again (though I won't argue if the developers value not having to stop xdm/kdm for upgrading as a more important goal). My only gripe would be that neither http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading#head-db224ea9add28760e373240f8239afb9b817f197 nor https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades#head-e7f287c730b93116f89de7ea7e05efbe95fa6dd1 mention the need for this (as of today, 28.07.2008). (I believe I used 'do-release-upgrade -m desktop', based on the advice given on the latter page.) Also the perl locale failures and other minor warnings (The update- modules command is deprecated and should not be used! and what have you) and errors had no visible effect on the results of the upgrade process. (The upgrade did leave me with a few regressions, but they are off-topic here.) * The other manual intervention would be this ('grep Running services apt-term.log'): Configuring libc6 Running services and programs that are using NSS need to be restarted, otherwise they might not be able to do lookup or authentication any more (for services such as ssh, this can affect your ability to login). Please review the following space-separated list of init.d scripts for services to be restarted now, and correct it if needed. Note: restarting sshd/telnetd should not affect any existing connections. Services to restart for GNU libc library upgrade: vsftpd rsync postfix cupsys cron atd_ Ok I will leave it up to the developers to decide on how to deal with and correctly assign this issue. * Richard Green: I wonder if all the other manual interruptions you mention were of the type you have a modified configuration file, what do you want to do? In this case, I doubt that automation would be desirable (unless by providing a specific option to force-override all custom configuration files OR force-preserve all such, both of which would remove the need for manual intervention in the middle of the upgrade process). (According to the logs ('grep -6 show apt-term.log' or 'grep show apt-term.log|wc -l') you had 12 of these. I had a few as well, and now that I checked the logs I know which ones they were. I did take notes of the most essential ones though, in case. ;-) ** Changed in: kdebase (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- Upgrade from kubuntu Dapper requires manual intervention and kdm shutdown https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/223226 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Team, which is subscribed to kdebase in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 236070] Re: Manually deleted menu entries didn't resotore after reinstal aplication
The bug report is valid from a user perspective. This is, however, due to a design choice of KDE. The changes made are saved to '~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu', and reinstalling a package can have no control over this. From http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdebase-runtime/userguide/kde- menu.html : Common Pitfalls Applications not in the menu do not exist with regard to other applications or file associations: If you remove an application from the menu, KDE assumes you don't want to use it. When applications are unwanted in the menu, either place them in .hidden menu or a dedicated menu with NoDisplay=true in the .directory file * As said, from the design perspective this bug may be classified as Invalid, but it does not remove or negate the negative user experience. The best option (from a user perspective) would probably be for 'kmenuedit' to have a separate tickbox for Hide this menu entry. [Bug 55299] Re: kdesu doesnt grab keyboard (unlike gksu)
For what it's worth, if I understood Yuriy Kozlov's description correctly, it hasn't happened yet and I hope it doesn't happen ever. I think the user can decide on their own where they want to type, and if they want to switch to check something in another application (e.g. confirm a howto with their browser) before signing the already-opened kdesu dialog, they should be able to do so, without having to cancel out of the dialog. [Bug 252559] [NEW] apt-get install and remove should be consistent (w.r.t. asking confirmation)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apt Hardy, apt 0.7.9ubuntu17. 'apt-get install onepackage' - works rightaway. 'apt-get install onepackage-which-brings-with-it-some-dependencies' - apt-get notifies you that e.g. 2 packages will be installed, continue? yes/no 'apt-get remove onepackage-which-removes-some-that-depend-on-it' - apt- get notifies you that e.g. 2 packages will be removed, continue? yes/no BUT 'apt-get remove onepackage' - doesn't work rightaway, but still asks for confirmation. (i.e. notifies you that 1 package will be removed, continue? yes/no) I think this is inconsistent, and inconvenient. After all, I have *explicitly* issued the command to apt-get remove thisonepackage.
