[Bug 538383] Re: Sound card not detected on Lenovo T410s with Ubuntu Lucid

2010-04-20 Thread madbiologist
@ Jimi - You may be interested in comment 18 at bug 522982. Note that
the linux-alsa-driver-modules-xxx in that ppa does not remain frozen at
1.0.23, but is update daily, which means there is the possibility to
introduce new bugs in the form of regressions or instability.

You may also be interested in the comments at bug 557742 - Jerone Young
is pushing to try and get this into the alsa-backports package in 10.04.
He has also created a dkms package to resolve this issue however he has
subsequently advised not to use the dkms package, but wait for alsa-
backports, as apparently the dkms package conflicts with the thinkpad-
acpi module.

[Bug 369311] Re: USB Broadband ZTE HSUPA Dongle MF637 doesn't connect

2010-04-21 Thread madbiologist
I have some good news. These modems are now included in usb-modeswitch-
data (20100221-1) upstream:

>From the changelog:

* New upstream release.
+ New devices
  [12d1:101e] Huawei U7510 / U7517
  [198f:bccd] Beceem BCSM250
  [19d2:2000] ZTE MF626 and others

Now we just have to wait for this to be included in Ubuntu. Keep an eye
on bug #564695 for that.

Also, in Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" HAL has been deprecated in favour of
udev, which should simplify things.

[Bug 452032] Re: Add storage support for VT6330

2010-04-21 Thread madbiologist
This patch has been included upstream in kernel 2.6.33.2.

>From the changelog:

commit 77aba144b01d97cd877dbbca15b1ba5b11192e5f

pata_via: fix VT6410/6415/6330 detection issue

commit bc8a67386fd462914269fa93446e1891955a8bb3 upstream.

When using VT6410/6415/6330 chips on some VIA's platforms, the HDD
connection to VT6410/6415/6330 cannot be detected.

It is because the driver detects wrong via_isa_bridge ID, and then
causes this issue to happen.

[Bug 515191] Re: Canon EOS 450D not recognized when connected to the pc with USB cable.

2010-02-10 Thread madbiologist
This may be fixed by updating to a newer version of libgphoto2. The
version in an up to date Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron is libgphoto2
2.4.0-8ubuntu8. According to http://gphoto.sourceforge.net/news/
support for the Canon EOS 450D was added in libgphoto2 2.4.2.
libgphoto2 2.4.2-0ubuntu2 is included in Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex,
with an update to 2.4.2-0ubuntu3 available. There is a Jaunty
2.4.2-0ubuntu5 package in the PPA available at
https://launchpad.net/~mrooney/+archive/ppa but I'm not sure if it will
apply to Hardy.

[Bug 569372] Re: 10.4 Live CD - Blank screen with Radeon 5870

2010-05-07 Thread madbiologist
Yes, anyone can run apport-collect , assuming there is not a
build error in the package that the bug is assigned to (xserver-xorg-
video-ati in this case) like there was in the Intel graphics driver for
a while during Lucid development.

And yes, nomodeset should be forcing UMS. However I found some reports
in the forums that nomodeset is not working for some people, both on ATI
and Intel graphics. An alternative option which seems to work is
radeon.modeset=0

However I emailed ATI's Alex Deucher about the patch I mentioned in the
second paragraph of comment 17. This is his reply:

> I'm unsure as to what it is supposed to do/fix.  Would you be able to
> explain briefly for me, with references if necessary?

It just expands the possible crtc mask for the output when mapping the
the kms stuff to xrandr. evergreen cards have 6 crtcs. The old mask
would have limited it to 4 IIRC. It only affects cards capable of
more than 4 independent heads.

No relevance. Your best bet for evergreen is kms. The ums
modesetting code doesn't work well for digital outputs and I haven't
had time to sort out why.

Also, I don't think you want to be messing with noapic. APIC is the Advanced
Programmable Interrupt Controller (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Programmable_Interrupt_Controller ) and
is completely different to acpi, which is the the Advanced Configuration and

still being actively developed).

[Bug 574644] Re: X will not start and crashes after upgrade from Karmic

2010-05-06 Thread madbiologist
Are you using KMS now? The "Fatal server error: Couldn't find valid PLL
dividers" (which I think might be a UMS only problem) problem has been
fixed upstream in xf86-video-ati - see
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-
ati/commit/?id=6aedd57f6c2f08d0151a8bd1c5893d40d3db709a

It sounds like there may be a problem with update-alternatives
redirecting to fglrx for hardware that it shouldn't when upgrading from
Karmic to Lucid.

[Bug 569372] Re: 10.4 RC Live CD - Blank screen with Radeon 5870

2010-05-06 Thread madbiologist
It is interesting that UMS (nomodeset) is not working for either of you,
given that UMS for these cards was committed upstream on the 1st
February 2010, well before xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.13.0 was released on
5th April 2010 (and before KMS was added to a 2.6.34 kernel RC).

I also found a patch titled "radeon/kms: fix possible crtc mask for
evergreen" at http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-
ati/commit/?id=2f680b631357661511456f07b7b4ba1aa2cbf30c but I'm not sure
what it is supposed to do.

The ATI Catalyst (fglrx) driver does not currently support Xserver 1.7.
If support does not arrive this month Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" may be
released with a special unreleased Catalyst driver to support Xserver
1.7, similar to what occurred in 9.10 "Karmic Koala" and 9.04 "Jaunty

[Bug 498799] Re: Rendering failure in glxgears (ATI R100)

2010-02-20 Thread madbiologist
This should be fixed in the newly released mesa 7.7-3ubuntu1 package.

>From the changelog:

[ Brice Goglin ]
  * Pull from upstream mesa_7_7_branch up to commit 2f28ca0a.
+ Fix funky colors on radeon/r200/r300.

This is the same commit in the Debian changelog, where it actually
mentions gears colours:

+commit 2f28ca0a27cb0c539affb22c487c4bb44b6d54b4
+Date: Wed Jan 27 11:46:26 2010 +1000
+
+ radeon/r200/r300: don't clean non-emitted state.
+
+ So if we don't actually emit an atom to the hw because we don't
+ need it in the current state (e.g. lighting related atoms when
+ lighting is off) then don't mark it as clean, because when
+ lighting gets switched on we won't emit it at all.
+
+ This fixes funky gears colors.

Can you please update to the new package and test?

[Bug 376248] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 has an obsolete version of teeworlds

2010-02-20 Thread madbiologist
Currently, anyone installing Teeworlds on Lucid will probably want to
update to the newly released 7.7-3ubuntu1 package.

It contains the following fix (taken from the Debian changelog):

+commit fdfa4c85297d5d25e7256bf73e35309b358af86c
+Date: Sat Jan 23 17:27:21 2010 +0100
+
+ st/mesa: fix unsigned/signed breakage in scissor
+
+ commit 53174afeeb introduced a portability change that converted GLint x,y
+ to GLuint. That breaks when x and y are negative, which seems to be allowed,
+ and which at least one game uses : teeworlds.
+
+ Rather than simply reverting the change, it seems possible to convert the
+ 16bit unsigned to GLint so that comparisons are made between signed integers
+ instead. This hopefully does not break anything while keeping MSVC happy.

This package should be included in Lucid alpha 3 and later.

[Bug 503298] Re: insufficient zoom (pdf are not zoomed properly)

2010-01-06 Thread madbiologist
I'm unable to reproduce this here on a 17 inch 1152x864 screen (detected
by RandR as a 16 inch screen).

Uname: Linux 2.6.31-16-generic i686

Package versions:
evince 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.2
poppler 0.12.0-0ubuntu2.1

Your experience is possibly due to using such a large screen at such a
low resolution. Is it a television? Even 19 inch wide-screen PC
monitors are usually 1440x900.

[Bug 408165] Re: Linksys By Cisco WUSB600N v2 Doesn't Work

2010-01-06 Thread madbiologist
Linux kernel 2.6.33-rc3 has just been released. The release notes at
http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/1/5/512 include the following comment:

rt2x00: Add USB ID for Linksys WUSB 600N rev 2.

Based on past kernel releases I would expect between 3 and 5 more RC's
(at approximately 1-week intervals) until 2.6.33 final. Then we just
need someone to make a PPA for Karmic, followed later by a PPA for Lucid
when it is released.
