Followed your instructions - however I am unsure if this really helps you. As a normal user (on the command line) it said that I am not part of the admin group. As root user it just segfaulted leaving me puzzled as what is wrong with my system :-( Did NOT try it without X. Will do that later.

I basically did the same as John ^ - but I used Ramlog (http://www.tremende.com/ramlog/index.htm) - it basically mounts your /var/log as ramdisk and synchronizes the contents when you shut down / start your computer with /var/log.hdd. Playing around with iotop -oPa I was able to find some more
