[Bug 366062] [NEW] User Management Missing From systemsettings

2009-04-24 Thread stormreaver
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 211985 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211985

Public bug reported:

The systemsettings program on my upgraded Kubuntu 9.04 systems (two of
them in front of me right now) don't show a user management icon. I've
upgraded this system in-place from 6.10 all the way through 9.04, so
this may be an issue with the upgrade process (I'm speculating).

I first noticed this after my upgrade to Kubuntu 8.10, but forgot to
report it since I can work around it via the command line.

I have not tried going back through older distributions to try
replicating this error, so I have no idea where to begin looking, or
what information to provide that may help in determining a cause. If
there is any information you need from me, just ask.

[Bug 178195] Re: ntop uninstall doesn't remove ntop from the log rotation

2009-04-04 Thread stormreaver
From my perspective as an application user, I expect all processing of
an uninstalled application to cease. It seems to me that removing ntop
from the log rotation is indeed the correct packaging solution upon any
type of package removal. If ntop is removed, then there is no point in
rotating its log files.

[Bug 351873] [NEW] Printer configuration in system settings can't find KCModule

2009-03-30 Thread stormreaver
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: systemsettings

I recently upgraded one of my computers from Kubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 beta
using sudo adept_manager --dist-upgrade. When I click on the Printer
Configuration icon in System Settings, I get the following error
message:

The service 'Printer Configuration' does not provide an interface
'KCModule' with keyword 'system-config-printer-kde/kcm-scpk.py'The
factory does not support creating components of the specified type.

Possible reasons:

o An error occurred during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control
module
o You have old third party modules lying around.

Check these points carefully and try to remove the module mentioned in
the error message. If this fails, consider contacting your distributor
or packager.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling system-config-printer-kde, but it
didn't help.

[Bug 302881] [NEW] Package update reverted from nvidia 177.80 back to 169.12

2008-11-27 Thread stormreaver
Public bug reported:

When the Kubuntu adept-notifier icon appeared with new software updates
yesterday (Nov. 26, 2008), I clicked it and went through the normal
software update procedure. When I rebooted this morning after
installing extra RAM, I found that the nvidia driver had reverted from
177.80 back to the extraordinarily buggy 169.12. Looking through
Adept's package listing, there is no longer any mention of version
177.80 (which is the only version that works well with KDE4). I have
not installed an nvidia driver on Kubuntu from any source other than the
official repositories.

Afterwards, I installed a server kernel to take full advantage of my 8GB
of RAM. I have since rebooted back into the non-server version of the
kernel, and had the same results. Using the 168.12 driver causes
spontaneous video death and extreme video corruption.

[Bug 302881] Re: Package update reverted from nvidia 177.80 back to 169.12

2008-11-27 Thread stormreaver
I decided to upgrade this computer to Intrepid as I've done for all my
other computers, and I noticed that the upgrade procedure mentions new
nvidia 177 packages are going to be installed. This would coincide with
my other computers, so I think this may be the best way to fix the
problem. I'll come back after the upgrade, and report whether this
fixes the problem.

[Bug 302881] Re: Package update reverted from nvidia 177.80 back to 169.12

2008-11-27 Thread stormreaver
If it's only available in Intrepid, then I must have remembered wrong.
I have a number of Kubuntu systems, most on Intrepid but a couple still
on Hardy, and I was reasonably sure that I seen 177.80 on this Hardy
machine. But given what you've said, I must have mixed this up with a
different machine.

Thanks for the response, and go ahead and mark this as invalid. That
said, the video still suddenly became terribly unstable after the last
system update. If I boot into 2.6.24-19 using the 169.12 driver, it
becomes stable. If I boot into 2.6.27-9 using the 169.12 driver, the
video gets corrupt in less than a minute, then loses its signal to the
monitor, and the machine becomes unresponsive to the keyboard until xorg
eventually crashes. I must have put that together with my faulty
recollection about where I have the 177.80 driver, and assumed I used to
have it on this machine.

[Bug 302881] Re: Package update reverted from nvidia 177.80 back to 169.12

2008-11-27 Thread stormreaver
Just to be complete: upgrading to Intrepid got the 177.80 driver, as
expected. All of my video problems are gone on kernel 2.6.24-19-server,
but X11 won't load the nVidia kernel module for 2.6.27-9-server. I'll
just use 2.6.24-19-server. Even the screen problems I had with UT-2004
are gone with the 177.80 driver.

Sorry for the bad bug report.

[Bug 202975] Re: kopete webcam is not available

2008-09-14 Thread stormreaver
I don't know. I had problems with Kopete freezing anytime invited
someone to view my webcam, so I recently bought a new one with a
different chipset. The old camera was CPIA based, and the new one has a
different chipset (I can't remember which chipset off-hand). I have
only been able to test the new webcam with Kopete on Yahoo once, but it
worked flawlessly. Considering the significant driver problems reported
with CPIA chipsets, I have concluded that the driver was probably the
culprit.

You can close this bug report, as it doesn't seem to be a problem with

[Bug 178195] ntop uninstall doesn't remove ntop from the log rotation

2007-12-22 Thread stormreaver
Public bug reported:

I installed ntop on Kubuntu Gutsy, used ntop for a few minutes, then
uninstalled it. My system is still reporting:

/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
error: error accessing /var/log/ntop: No such file or directory
error: ntop:1 glob failed for /var/log/ntop/*.log
run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate exited with return code 1

in my root daily email reports, and has been doing this for weeks. I
traced it down to the ntop file still residing in /etc/logrotate.d after
uninstalling ntop. It appears that the ntop removal script in the .deb
archive is not removing this file as it should. I'm deleting the file
manually, and will report back if this solves the problem.

[Bug 152394] Re: ra_dav missing in subversion

2007-10-14 Thread stormreaver
I couldn't find anything called feisty-proposed, but I have the
Unsupported and Pre-released repositories selected (the latter being
what I think you mean).

I unselected them both, refreshed the package list, uninstalled
Subversion, and tried reinstalling.

sudo apt-get install subversion gives me this error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  subversion: Depends: libsvn1 (= 1.4.3dfsg1-1ubuntu1) but
1.4.3dfsg1-1ubuntu1.1 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

If I re-enable the Unsupported and Pre-released repositories, Subversion
installs okay but is missing most of the RA modules.

You need to uninstall libsvn1 too when you downgrade.

Thanks, it works again now.

[Bug 146453] Re: Latest Update Breaks KDE

2007-09-30 Thread stormreaver
I cannot write to my CDRW, mount NFS shares, view my /media folder via
Konqeuror, and do a host of other items since the update. KDE boots
with multiple copies of kded, and much of my desktop acts very bizarre
overall (too many things to list here).

I rebooted and reverted back to the prior kernel (2.6.20-15-generic),
and everything is fixed. It seems that the 2.6.20-16-generic kernel was
responsible for turning my system into a big mess.

[Bug 146453] Latest Update Breaks KDE

2007-09-28 Thread stormreaver
Public bug reported:

System: Kubuntu 7.04

I have no idea how to reproduce this, but I thought I would report it
anyway. When I noticed the update icon in my system tray, I ran through
the normal update procedure. I noticed that large portions of KDE were
being updated, and a new kernel was being updated. This is no problem,
and happens regularly, so I proceeded with the upgrade. No errors were
reported, and everything seemed to be fine. Since I was working, I
decided to hold off rebooting until later (which ended up being three or
four hours later).

The reboot proceeded normally, and I logged in via kdm as usual. This
is where things started going wrong. KDE went through its normal
startup without any errors, and my entire previous session was restored.
It just seemed to take a few seconds longer than usual for the session
restore to start. When I selected an empty virtual desktop, I noted
that all of my desktop icons were gone. The last program to be restored
happened to be Konsole, which had keyboard focus. I pressed alt-f2 to
bring up the run dialog, but all I got was the binary keyboard code
showing in Konsole.

I then tried to launch Run Command... from the K Menu, but nothing
happened. I tried right-clicking on the K Menu, and Kicker froze. It
didn't crash; it just froze. None of the KDE keyboard shortcuts worked
(Control-Escape wouldn't bring up the ksysguard, for example). Right-
clicking on an empty desktop did nothing. Many KDE programs will not
start, though one will from time to time. Running strace on Konqueror
shows it stalling waiting for a response having to do with kded. Here
are the last several lines of strace before it stalls indefinitely:

I just now noticed all of the missing icon files, so I checked
adept_manager. It says that kde-core is uninstalled. When I get home
from work, I'll try reinstalling it and seeing if that helps.

[Bug 146453] Re: Latest Update Breaks KDE

2007-09-28 Thread stormreaver
I have more information. I found that there were multiple copies of
kded running (in this case, four copies). The first copy showed in ps
aux as:

kded [kdeinit]

The other three showed as:

kded [kdeinit] --new-startup
kded [kdeinit] --new-startup
kded [kdeinit] --new-startup

I killed the three with --new-startup, and my desktop icons immediately
returned, most KDE applications started working again (such as Konqueror
and KMail), and the KDE shortcut keys immediately started working again.
Kaffeine won't work for some reason, but most of my desktop
functionality is back.

[Bug 111553] Re: Long delays on SSH login from an Ubuntu system

2007-05-29 Thread stormreaver
I can confirm this also. I can also confirm that installing krb5-config
on Feisty 7.04 removes the excessive delay. When I upgraded from Fedora
Core 6 to Kubuntu Edgy, I started having the 10-15 second delays (a
problem I never got around to addressing until today). I installed
krb5-config, and the delay became almost unnoticeable.

[Bug 109950] Re: mythtv-database configuration cannot connect to MySQL database

2007-04-27 Thread stormreaver
Still no luck. I stopped the MythTV back end, removed mythtv and
mythtv-database with, sudo apt-get --purge remove mythtv-database, and
got:

Removing mythtv ...
Removing mythtv-database ...
Purging configuration files for mythtv-database ...

I then typed: sudo apt-get install mythtv-database and got:

Setting up mythtv-database (0.20-svn20070122-0.0ubuntu6) ...
Failed to connect to database: Access denied for user 'root'@'192.168.1.101'
(using password: NO) at -e line 5, line 1.
Failed to create database (incorrect admin username/password?)
It's also possible that mysql-server wasn't running. After install
is completed, you will need to make sure mysql-server is running
and that you supplied correct information. Try:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure mythtv-database
cp: cannot create regular file
`/var/lib/update-notifier/user.d/mythtv-reconfigure-required': No such file or
directory
dpkg: error processing mythtv-database (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I then tried reconfiguring, and got nowhere.

[Bug 109950] mythtv-database configuration cannot connect to MySQL database

2007-04-25 Thread stormreaver
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv-database

I upgraded from Kubuntu Edgy to Feisty 7.04 using update-manager. Now
apt-get (and anything that uses it, such as Adept) always reports an
error with mythtv-database. The mythtv-database configuration always
tries to connect to MySQL as the root user, but without a password.
Since my MythTV setup existed prior to updating and my MySQL database
already has a password assigned to the root user for use by Wordpress,
the attempted connection to MySQL as a passwordless root user fails. I
have correct mythtv login credentials for the mythtv user in
/etc/mythtv/mysql.txt, but they appear to be ignored.

I have already tried uninstalling and then reinstalling mythtv-database

[Bug 41339] Re: Mythtv won't install

2007-04-21 Thread stormreaver
I upgraded from Edgy to Feisty on Saturday, April 14, 2007 using update-
manager (which worked very well until it encountered Myth), and ran into
this problem on my previously functional MythTV setup. Now nothing will
install via apt/adept without error messages. The most promising
solution appeared to be, sudo dpkg-reconfigure mythtv-database, but
that presents its own problem. When running that command, I get an
error message saying:

/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: mythtv-database is broken or not fully
installed

Prior to running that command, I had tried uninstalling and reinstalling
mythtv-database and mythtv. Removal went okay, but reinstallation
caused the root password problem to reappear. Since my web site runs
on Wordpress and therefore requires MySQL, I have a pre-existing non-
default root password. The mythtv-database installer does not appear to
try acquiring the MySQL root password in any form, and so gets stuck.

I am using 192.168.1.101 as the MySQL bind address since I want to allow
my other networked MythTV front ends to connect to my server, and have
allowed remote access to MySQL: grant all privileges on mythconverg.* to
'root'@'192.168.1.101' identified by '[my password]'; flush privileges;

mythtv-database attempts to connect to MySQL without a root password in
any event.
