i never hoped it would work so easily...
sudo vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf
i changed the usefbdev to false and added a line
driver radeonhd
it worked

Radeon Driver fails
i have the same problems, with ndiswrapper under ubuntu and a realtek
8187L card. if the signal is not good, the adapter hangs, the led stays
either on or off, until i reinsert the adapter.

actually no, that's a lie. the behaviour i described was observed only
under XP SP2 with drivers from realtek versions 1313 and previous. under
kubuntu 8.10/8.04 it has *similar* (bad) functionality both with the
linux driver and the ndiswrapper-ed driver.
