Just decided to give a try to Ubuntu 10.04 on this Omnibook X3 laptop, and

The login screen is corrupted, but if I enter the password it resets to
something tartan-like look.

The fix is as simple as adding gvfs-fuse as a dependency to the gigolo package.
why would this need upstream fixing? this is an ubuntu packaging issue

fits in UDP, the issue occurs when you add the non-free codecs.

Some SIP providers return 403 Forbidden (No RFC 1918 IP allowed

interoperability issue here, than a real bug in ekiga.

Ekiga 2.x series is not supported by upstream any more. The only way to
get a 3.x officially released by Ubuntu is to use Ubuntu Jaunty.
I plan to backport unofficially, but it might take time...

You need to remove ekiga first:
$ sudo apt-get remove ekiga
Then you can install ekiga-gtkonly:
$ sudo apt-get install ekiga-gtkonly
Since Ubuntu Jaunty, there no ekiga-gtkonly any more.
