Does shutting down work for anybody in the latest kubuntu?
This happened to me as soon as I upgraded to hardy from kubuntu gutsy
using the package manager. A friend of mine also says this happens to
him after a fresh install of kubuntu hardy heron from the CDs
(presumably after updating).
This actually seems to be a problem with KDM.
I switched back to normal Gnome-based Ubuntu, and shut down / restart /
log out work as expected. After installing KDM, it ceases to work.
Removing KDM fixes the problem.

Hardy Heron won't shut down or restart
KDM is the login manager that KDE uses, and Kubuntu has that installed
by default - the big blue graphical login screen with the Kubuntu logo.
So, if you use Kubuntu, you're probably using KDM, unless you explicitly
installed another (GDM, etc.).

Searching google shows that this has happened before by many others who
accidentally type GET / HTTP/1.1 on the command line.
To someone who expects only / to be returned, this seems like adware,
but it actually is not; GET - being a command, not the HTTP request -
tries to get two things: / and
