Does shutting down work for anybody in the latest kubuntu? This happened to me as soon as I upgraded to hardy from kubuntu gutsy using the package manager. A friend of mine also says this happens to him after a fresh install of kubuntu hardy heron from the CDs (presumably after updating). Unfortunately, the solution for me was to use gnome and gdm rather than kde and kdm.
