Before resuming normal boot, I am able to switch from gdm to tty[1-6] by
pressing CTRL+ALT+F1.
Yet after I select to resume normal boot, if I then switch to gdm, I can no
longer switch back to tty[1-6]

I installed Trusty on a Dell Inspiron 5537 laptop, yet it fails to
boot beyond the plymouth animation.
So I booted in recovery mode, and done the following:
* Enabled network
* Dropped to root shell, and started gdm from there.
* Return back to recovery menu, and se
unbreak_abi.diff patch to Re-add hb_version_check to unbreak API/ABI.
This patch should be removed on the next API/ABI break by upstream.

Funny thing, I installed lightdm (with --no-install-recommends), and
tried it, but it won't work. It wouldn't even start manually.
Anyways, after I removed lightdm and then rebooted. Now gdm starts on
boot.
