Re: [Bug 930456] Re: Brother MFC-410CN incorrectly reported as having "no ink left"

2018-08-10 Thread Alex Peters
Hi,

Sorry—I misunderstood your message.

It is probably still a problem, but after waiting 6+ years for a resolution
to this issue (or even an acknowledgement) I gave up and got rid of my
printer altogether.

It's disheartening that such a critical issue—one which prevented use of
the printer entirely—was ignored without comment for years.

With frustration,
Alex

Hi,

If nothing has changed then this would still be a problem.

Kind regards,
Alex

not sure that segfaults should occur.

[Bug 1389035] [NEW] Delete key triggers account deletion when editing account description inline

2014-11-03 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

On the Accounts tab, select an account and then left-click its
description. The description becomes editable. Move to the beginning
of the description and press the Delete key to delete the first
character.

Expected behaviour: the first character of the description is removed.

Actual behaviour: a dialogue box appears asking whether the account
should be deleted.

[Bug 1386542] Re: FLAC instruments in sample project don't play

I'm sorry, but I don't know whether this bug is present in earlier
versions.

I can confirm that the problem persists with v1.0.3 from
ppa:israeldahl/lmms1.0.3utopic.

[Bug 1386544] Re: song editor window doesn't redraw properly at time of maximising

2014-10-30 Thread Alex Peters
I am using Linux Mint 17 which is a derivative of Ubuntu Trusty (I think
just the desktop differs, really).

The problem persists with v1.0.3 from ppa:israeldahl/lmms1.0.3utopic so
I've filed a bug upstream as requested:

Version: 1.0.0+stable-0ubuntu1

Included sample project /usr/share/lmms/projects/CoolSongs/Zakarra-
59_Degrees.mmpz features several tracks that use FLAC-based samples.

On my system, these tracks are silent and when I open the settings for
those instruments, the waveform for the sample shows up as multi-
coloured noise (pic attached).

Probably some FLAC dependency needs to be added to the LMMS package.

[Bug 1386544] [NEW] song editor window doesn't redraw properly at time of maximising

visible before the maximise are redrawn. In order to cause all of the
blocks to become visible, the window must be manually scrolled. Please

[Bug 1386678] [NEW] right-click menu actions don't always act on right-clicked item

2014-10-28 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

$ baobab --version
baobab 3.8.2

Right-clicking a folder in the list on the left presents options such as
open folder and move to the rubbish bin.

Assume Folder A is currently selected (i.e. previously left-clicked).
If Folder B is right-clicked, the actions in that menu will apply to
Folder A, not Folder B.

In my case, this resulted in the attempted deletion of my home directory
rather than one of its descendants.

Making the right-click menu operate on the right-clicked item
unconditionally would probably be more intuitive behaviour.

[Bug 1270390] Re: request to add collection from network share is silently ignored

2014-01-20 Thread Alex Peters
Reporting this bug at bugs.kde.org requires an account, which requires a
valid email address. The website also issues this warning:

PRIVACY NOTICE: KDE Bugtracking System is an open bug tracking system.
Activity on most bugs, including email addresses, will be visible to the
public. We recommend using a secondary account or free web email service
(such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, or similar) to avoid receiving spam at
your primary email address.

I don't have a secondary email account and I don't wish for my email
address to be publicised. Is there another way to make this bug report
available to the KDE developers?

[Bug 1270389] [NEW] QMYSQL Driver not loaded Driver not loaded

2014-01-18 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Install digiKam and proceed through the first-run wizard.
2. Enter digiKam configuration, and enter MySQL database connection details.
3. Press Check DB Connection.

Expected result:

digiKam attempts to connect to the specified database.

Actual result:

Database connection test was not successful. Error was: Driver not
loaded Driver not loaded

Running from the terminal, the following messages are output when the
button is pressed:

QSqlDatabase: QMYSQL driver not loaded
QSqlDatabase: available drivers: QSQLITE

I was able to fix this problem by installing package libqt4-sql-mysql
and restarting digiKam. Possibly this package should be considered a
dependency, or at least a recommendation, or perhaps digiKam could
indicate which package needs to be installed in this situation.

[Bug 1270390] [NEW] request to add collection from network share is silently ignored

2014-01-18 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open digiKam configuration and move to Collections pane.
2. Click Add Collection next to Collections on Network Shares, select a
path within a network share (e.g. smb://diskstation/home/digikam) and click
OK.

Expected result:

digiKam asks for the collection's name, like it does for local
collections, and then it is added under the Collections on Network
Shares header.

Actual result:

digiKam does not ask for the collection's name, and nothing is added
under the Collections on Network Shares header.

[Bug 1265994] [NEW] right-click menu on playlist item causes mouse to be stuck down

2014-01-04 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Populate the play queue with multiple items, then open the Play Queue view.
2. Right-click the top entry, release the mouse button, then dismiss the menu
that appears by clicking (and releasing) outside the menu.

Expected behaviour: the original entry remains highlighted, and moving
the mouse over the play queue does not cause this selection to change.

Actual behaviour: GMPC seems to think that the mouse is still pressed
down, causing other items in the play queue to be selected when the
mouse passes over them.

This odd behaviour is not limited to the play queue; it also occurs in
the Database, Search, Playlist Editor, Genre Browser and Artist Browser
screens.

[Bug 1265976] [NEW] main window self-minimising

2014-01-03 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Transmission Remote GUI via the Dash.
2. Wait for main window to open.
3. Switch to another window, e.g. Chrome.
4. Attempt to Alt+Tab back to Transmission Remote GUI, or click its Dash icon.

Expected behaviour: the Transmission Remote GUI main window appears and
can be used.

Actual behaviour: the main window appears briefly, then undergoes
minimise animation into the Dash icon. Subsequent attempts to restore
the window (both via Alt+Tab and via clicking the Dash icon) result in
the same minimising behaviour.

Additionally, right-clicking the Dash icon and selecting Quit does not
cause Transmission Remote GUI to quit. It is necessary to killall
transgui and then restart it to re-attain access to the main window--
albeit temporarily before the same problem re-occurs.

system updates have been applied.

When the Details section of the Synchronisation Failed window is

Running Tomboy from a terminal indicates that the problem is remote:

2013-03-28 Thread Alex Peters
Further analysis suggests why there's a remote problem now in the first
place:

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/02/ubuntu-one-announce-tomboy-note-sync-
to-stop-working-late-february

It seems that Ubuntu One no longer actually supports note
synchronisation.

[Bug 1033533] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT: exaMemcpyBox with src=0x0 on nouveau with SW rendering

2013-03-07 Thread Alex Peters
This bug pretty much renders my system entirely inoperable.

Steps to completely freeze my system:

1. Boot.
2. Open and close Dash three times, observing pixel corruption (screen shot
attached) from second Dash opening. Observe system getting slower and slower
with each operation.
3. Attempt to open Dash fourth time.

[Bug 1069272] Re: Ubuntu 12.10 xrdp gets blank screen at login

2012-10-21 Thread Alex Peters
May or may not be relevant:

http://c-nergy.be/blog/?p=2879

Solving the “Empty Desktop Problem”

This problem was quite easy to solve. After some research on google,
I’ve found out that I was not the only one having the issue. The
solution was quite simple. In a few words, you have to force the xRDP
software to use the ubuntu-2D (or the gnome-fallback) Desktop
environment. To force that, you will need to create the .xsession file
in your home directory and insert the following text in it

gnome-session –session=ubuntu-2d

or you can use a command line to perform exactly the same operation

This workaround allows you to have a workable desktop. On the other
hand, you will be forced to use Ubuntu-2d (this is ok if you have chosen
Unity as preferred desktop). But if you have configured gnome-shell as
your preferred desktop, you will not be able to use it. I would say not
a big deal, you can remotely connect to your system and in we hope that
new release will fix this small issue.

[Bug 1016796] [NEW] allow selection of different playlist to be associated with star icon

2012-06-22 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

As MPD may be used in an environment shared by multiple people, it makes
sense for clients to allow favourites to be read from/written to a
specific playlist.

While it is possible in GMPC to assign the currently playing song to a
specific playlist by right-clicking the star icon, left-clicking the
star icon always modifies the playlist named Favorites and the star is
only illuminated for the next playing song if that song appears in the
global Favorites playlist.

This behaviour results in GMPC's Favorites functionality being
unusable in a shared environment, as multiple GMPC users corrupt each
other's favourites.

For my GMPC installation I would prefer to nominate, e.g., Alex's
Favourites to be the playlist on which the star icon operates. Other
GMPC users connecting to the same MPD instance would also nominate their
own starred playlist. This would prevent the scenario described
above.

[Bug 1007341] [NEW] computer fails to fully wake after suspend, requiring full power cycle to resurrect

2012-06-01 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

If I select Suspend from the Power menu, my computer suspends as
expected.

When subsequently pressing the Power button on the front of the computer
to wake it, the computer's hard disks power up but the monitor (and
hence the computer in full) does not.

A press of the hardware Reset button on the computer appears to make the
computer reset, but the computer does not subsequently progress to the
BIOS POST screen--at this time, it hangs/freezes in the same manner as
when first being woken from suspension. It is actually necessary to
hold down the Power button such that the computer is forced to switch
off fully, and then turn it on again.

/var/log/pm-suspend.log (attached) makes reference to the suspend being
performed, but doesn't appear to report anything else after going into
suspension. I don't know what other log files may be relevant, but am
more than happy to provide any that are deemed to be.

[Bug 1007352] [NEW] toggle fullscreen mode keyboard shortcut not honoured

2012-06-01 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

I have opened the Keyboard Shortcuts window and assigned Shift+F11 to
the toggle fullscreen mode action.

If I then focus a maximisable window that doesn't use the Shift+F11 key
combination for anything else, pressing that key combination does not
result in the window becoming full-screen.

to no avail.

[Bug 1004793] [NEW] deluge-console hangs/freezes when commands passed on command line

2012-05-25 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

I am attempting to use deluge-console on my notebook computer to
communicate with a daemon on another machine.

$ deluge-console --version
deluge-console: 1.3.5

$ deluged --version
deluged: 1.3.5
libtorrent: 0.14.10.0

I can start deluge-console interactively and connect to the remote
deluge daemon with no problems. Here's an example using time to show
that starting, connecting and exiting interactively can be done in less
than 10 seconds:

$ time deluge-console
 connect 10.0.0.2 deluge deluge
Connected to 10.0.0.2:58846!
 exit

real0m7.332s
user0m0.252s
sys 0m0.072s

If I pass these commands via the command line however, the process hangs
with no output. Here's an example that uses timelimit to kill the
process after 60 seconds, showing that the process hangs:

$ timelimit -t 60 deluge-console connect 10.0.0.2 deluge deluge; exit
timelimit: sending warning signal 15

[Bug 1002747] [NEW] HUD appears when pressing Alt+Left or Alt+Right to navigate in Firefox

2012-05-22 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

In Firefox, Alt+Left and Alt+Right are used to navigate backwards and
forwards in the current tab's page history respectively.

If these key combinations are completed quickly enough, the HUD
erroneously appears immediately afterwards.

Quickly is the key here; if the keystroke is completed at a slower
rate (e.g. slower than the time between a user holding down Alt and the
current window's menu bar appearing), the HUD does not appear.

This problem does not seem to occur with all Firefox Alt+ keyboard
shortcuts. For instance, I can hit Alt+1, Alt+2 etc. to switch between
tabs as quickly as I like and the HUD does not appear in these cases.

[Bug 930799] [NEW] segmentation fault while importing photos from F-Spot

2012-02-11 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

Shotwell segfaulted while trying to import a large F-Spot photo
collection (possibly including many duplicates, as this was the third
attempt) into a large existing Shotwell collection.

Shotwell was invoked in this manner:

log doesn't seem to provide any useful information related to the
segfault.

[Bug 930456] [NEW] Brother MFC-410CN incorrectly reported as having no ink left

2012-02-10 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

I am now unable to print any documents to a Brother MFC-410CN printer,
attached via the network.

This problem presumably surfaced during a past software upgrade, but I
don't know precisely when.

Opening the system-config-printer-gnome tool, the printer is shown with
a red exclamation symbol on its icon. The attached screen shot shows
the ink levels as reported by (presumably) CUPS.

If I attempt to print a document, the document enters and exits the
printer queue and no job errors are reported, but the document doesn't
print.

The printer itself reports all four ink tanks as close to full, and it
is possible to print test pages from the printer. These test pages
prove the presence of ink in all four tanks.

[Bug 904662] [NEW] CD/DVD Creator fails to eject disc after writing, or detect reinsertion after manual eject

2011-12-15 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

This problem is common to both Nautilus and Brasero, so maybe this bug
belongs to some library rather than to Brasero.

When I attempt to burn a data disc, the write appears to succeed as
Success subsequently shows up underneath the status bar of the CD/DVD
Creator window.

A second or two after this however, the status changes to writing image
checksum. After more time passes, this box comes up:

Please eject the disc from HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L manually.
The disc could not be ejected though it needs to be removed for the current
operation to continue.
[Cancel]

Manually ejecting and then reinserting the disc does not make this box
go away. The only way for the process to continue is to press Cancel,
after which the CD is reported as successfully burned.

This problem persists on Ubuntu 11.10, as demonstrated by the attached

[Bug 286774] Re: cannot see text, only line art

2011-12-07 Thread Alex Peters
...okay, unable to change the importance.

After running Evince via the terminal, I see these errors repeatedly:

$ evince 5-1-MetrorailUserRequirementSpecification.pdf
Error: Cannot open '/home/lx/.fonts/arial.ttf'
Error: failed to load truetype font

some font thing failed
...
Error: Cannot open '/home/lx/.fonts/arialbd.ttf'

Both of these fonts appear to have appropriate permissions:

[Bug 793122] Re: some font thing failed, failed to load truetype font - important data silently left out

2011-12-07 Thread Alex Peters
I have this problem with a publicly available PDF:

http://www.prasa.com/Documents/StockRenewal/5-1-MetrorailUserRequirementSpecification.pdf

but I don't get errors about bad table definitions. Instead I see
errors about being unable to load local fonts:

Error: Cannot open '/home/lx/.fonts/arial.ttf'
Error: failed to load truetype font

some font thing failed
...
Error: Cannot open '/home/lx/.fonts/arialbd.ttf'
Error: failed to load truetype font

some font thing failed

$ ls -l /home/lx/.fonts/arial{,bd}.ttf
-rw-r--r-- 1 lx root 352224 2007-11-13 17:50 /home/lx/.fonts/arialbd.ttf
-rw-r--r-- 1 lx root 367112 2007-11-13 17:50 /home/lx/.fonts/arial.ttf

Both fonts open as expected in the font viewer.

The attached screen shot shows how the file renders. The UI itself
reports no errors.

Please also note that the entire document renders as shown in the screen
shot--that is, no page of the document is readable.

Perhaps a higher importance may be assigned in light of that.

[Bug 898028] Re: assertion failed in hash_timed_queue_removed while importing photos from F-Spot

2011-11-30 Thread Alex Peters
Thanks for your prompt and significant action on this ticket.

Could you please let me know how to enable debugging? Shotwell doesn't
accept a --debug command line option, and a Google search for shotwell
debug doesn't return any obvious answers.

I don't have direct access to the computer affected (it belongs to
extended family), but when I next do--and am equipped to generate debug
output--I will provide further information ASAP.

[Bug 898028] [NEW] assertion failed in hash_timed_queue_removed while importing photos from F-Spot

2011-11-29 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

$ shotwell
**
ERROR:x86_64-linux-gnu/TimedQueue.c:1150:hash_timed_queue_removed: assertion
failed: (_tmp0_)
Aborted

While attempting to import an F-Spot collection (around 158,000 photos)
into an existing Shotwell collection (around 48,500 photos), Shotwell
terminated with the error message shown above after processing 16,968
F-Spot photos. These photos have remained within Shotwell and are
visible in the Last Import list.

The import process ran for around 9 hours before failing, with import
preparation occupying the first several of these hours; this suggests a
polynomial (O(n^c)) or greater import processing time which might be
another bug in itself.

I have been experiencing this issue with only one server configured.

However, in your comment you also report seeing multiple concurrent
master password entry prompts. This was also a problem for me in the
past when I did in fact have multiple servers configured.

[Bug 884672] Re: boot splash screen displays at incorrect resolution

2011-11-13 Thread Alex Peters
This is the information that I receive from vbeinfo:

grub vbeinfo
List of supported video modes:
Legend: P=Packed pixel, D=Direct color, mask/pos=R/G/B/reserved
Adapter 'Cirrus CLGD 5446 PCI Video Driver':
  No info available
Adapter 'Bochs PCI Video Driver':
  No info available
Adapter 'VESA BIOS Extension Video Driver':
VBE info: version: 3.0 OEM software rev: 5.115
  total memory: 262144 KiB
[list of video modes not including 1920x1080 omitted]
  EDID version: 1.3
Preferred mode: 1920x1080
Adapter 'VGA Video Driver':
  No info available

From this I infer that the monitor's native resolution is being properly
detected, but no matching mode is available.

Steve, from your earlier comment I understand that my options are as
follows:

1. upgrade the BIOS in an attempt to address the possible BIOS bug
2. switch to the native nouveau driver

Sadly though, I do not know at this stage how to do either. Off to
Google!

[Bug 884672] Re: boot splash screen displays at incorrect resolution

2011-11-13 Thread Alex Peters
In an attempt to switch to the native nouveau driver, I have entered the
Additional Drivers settings applet, clicked Remove on the active
NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver and restarted the computer. The
problem still persists; vbeinfo still does not report 1920x1080 as an
available mode. I don't know if this rules out the proprietary NVIDIA
drivers as a problem.

There are also no available BIOS upgrades for my particular motherboard.

[Bug 886424] [NEW] computer locks screen when Hibernate option is selected

2011-11-04 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

At the time of creating this bug report via ubuntu-bug indicator-
session, selecting Hibernate from the session menu was only locking
the screen instead of actually hibernating the machine.

Hibernation normally works for this machine, and does in fact work again
after a reboot. At the time that it wasn't working, several hibernation
attempts were all simply causing the screen to lock.

Interestingly (perhaps), on each occasion that I entered my password to
be returned to my desktop after the failed hibernation attempt, a
notification of being reconnected to my wireless network would display.
This suggests that the hibernation was partially working in that
particular services (such as networking) were being suspended.

[Bug 884672] [NEW] boot splash screen displays at incorrect resolution

2011-11-01 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

My LCD monitor's native resolution is 1920x1080, but the Ubuntu boot

[Bug 881311] [NEW] repeated notifications of file upload on login

Public bug reported:

When I first log in, I get the following libnotify-osd-style popup:

Frequently, this popup repeats some random number of times at intervals

[Bug 881188] [NEW] installation of lmms prevents installation of wine1.3

2011-10-24 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

As shown by the terminal transcript below, LMMS has a hard-coded
dependency on wine1.2. As wine1.3 conflicts with wine1.2, installation
of wine1.3 alongside LMMS is not possible.

This bug is similar to bug #696189, which was resolved by changing a
dependency on a specific Wine component to Wine itself--but a specific
version of Wine.

With much oblivion, I wonder why Wine packages even have version numbers
in their name at all.

# apt-get upgrade
...
The following packages have been kept back:
  wine
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

# apt-get -s install wine
...
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  lmms wine1.2
...

# apt-get install lmms wine
...
lmms is already the newest version.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
wine : Depends: wine1.3 but it is not going to be installed

[Bug 853648] Re: SimpleScan saves PDFs as very large (26.6MiB) files per Page

2011-10-21 Thread Alex Peters
This impacts me as well.

I really wish I'd noticed this before destroying the original papers and
uploading over half a gigabyte (for only 40 A4 pages) to Ubuntu One.

Is there a way to fix the size of these existing files without losing
scan quality or requiring a re-scan?

[Bug 869593] [NEW] launcher intermittently fails to appear when a window is maximised and mouse strikes left edge of screen

2011-10-06 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

I just booted up, started a Terminal and maximised it. I was unable to
display the launcher by pushing the mouse cursor against the left edge
of the screen, and had to hit the Super key to get it visible.

Opening another maximised window (Firefox) seemed to correct this, even
when Alt+Tabbing back to the Terminal window.

This is not an isolated incident; it has been happening for at least a
couple days with various maximised windows. I tend to notice it most
when using a Terminal though because the only reason I'd be using the
mouse is to switch tabs or try to launch something else.

[Bug 861093] [NEW] after minimising a window, it still has keyboard focus and its title and menu bar remain on the screen

2011-09-27 Thread Alex Peters
Public bug reported:

Please refer to the attached screen shots.

Screen shot 1 shows a maximised Firefox window prior to minimising.

Screen shot 2 shows a maximised text editor, previously behind Firefox
before it was minimised by means of the clickable Minimise button. It
also shows a Firefox menu, despite the text editor appearing to have
focus. Note that the minimised Firefox window still continues to
receive keyboard events.

Perhaps also of interest: clicking the Firefox launcher item does not
restore the window. It is necessary to Alt+Tab a couple of times
instead.
