[Bug 1450137] Re: Qt5 applications crash when switching screens

2015-05-12 Thread Antonis Kanouras
I managed to get backtraces out of Konsole Plasma, excuse the poor
quality of them as I only remembered to log output after I started gdb.

In all 3 cases they're now crashing in QScreen::handle() with
(this=this@entry=0x0) .

[Bug 1450137] Re: Qt5 applications crash when switching screens

2015-05-12 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Re: the impact, I guess it affects users on laptops that regularly
(dis)connect external screens (eg. using same laptop at work home or
connecting the laptop to a TV to watch a movie) without shutting down
the machine. From the few (10) Kubuntu 15.04 installations I can be
blamed for, I'm the only one who noticed the bug even though I managed
to reproduce it on all of them.

Anyway, after reading the qtbugs and trying to cherry-pick a few
relevant upstream commits, I think Qt 5.4.1 is a lost cause for this bug
at this point, so feel free to postpone/cancel this SRU.

As my next steps, I'll try Fedora, and also 5.4.2 5.5 on Vivid Wily
to see if I can reproduce it. Will take a few days however. :/

[Bug 1450137] Re: Qt5 applications crash when switching screens

2015-05-12 Thread Antonis Kanouras
I did a few tests:

On the first reboot after installing qtdeclarative from the Wily PPA on
Vivid, I probably got lucky and managed to plug/unplug the external
monitor 4 times before the first crash (nvidia-340's xrandr also stopped
detecting changes for the next 2 topology changes at that point,
although that's nothing new).

On subsequent reboots I'm getting Plasma/Kwin/Konsole crashes on almost every
screen change.
Some changes in behaviour that I noticed:

1. Dr. Konqi is started for kwin crashes, but no window appears (no mention of
it in xlsclients either).
2. Dr. Konqi is not started for plasmashell crashes (crashes on almost every
screen change).
3. Dr. Konqi is not started for Konsole crashes (crashes on every screen
change).
4. krunner does not crash on screen change - it crashes instead when called
with Alt+F2, with Dr. Konqi appearing. It doesn't allow me to report krunner
crashes by the way, but that's another bug. The backtrace (which I'm attaching)
is different this time, there's no physicalSize() in it. Luckily it's restarted
right after usually, so there's a way to recover manually.
5. System Settings 5 also usually crashes around screen changes; that's caught
by apport however, which gives me zero information.
6. Usually after a crash, the Plasma panel flickers, with only the spacer being
displayed when not flickering, and can't be clicked. Disabling composition with
the shortcut works around this.

All in all, I'd say the behaviour has improved a bit, as regards the
frequency of crashes; however, losing Dr. Konqi is mildly disappointing.

I have to apologise here for jumping on this patch without having tested
it myself first. I'll try pre-attaching gdb to kwin/plasmashell/konsole
to get backtraces out of them, and a Fedora install in the next days to
see if the crashes are really fixed, at least on my machine, and report
back.

[Bug 1450137] Re: Qt5 applications crash when switching screens

2015-05-08 Thread Antonis Kanouras
This has affected all Plasma 5 releases in Kubuntu since Utopic,
including the current backport of Plasma 5.3.

It reliably triggers a cascade of crashes in at least krunner, plasma
and kwin on every screen topology change, making for a very
disconcerting user experience.

Please consider cherry-picking https://codereview.qt-
project.org/#/c/00/ for Qt 5.4.2, Fedora and OpenSUSE have already
done so.

You can find more details in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=345544

[Bug 1445799] Re: Can't add item to Places

2015-04-30 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Workaround:

Try using the File Open/Save dialog of any other KDE application (Kate,
Gwenview, Cantor, etc.) to add/remove entries to Places. They do appear
in Dolphin (still Qt4 based) but trying to delete them is ineffective.

2 more notes:
1. This bug occurs with either Plasma 5.2.2 or 5.3.0 installed.
2. Either KF4/KF5-based applications' file dialogs can manipulate Places
succesfully.

By the way, this may be a Kubuntu-specific bug, as there's nothing
relevant on bugs.kde.org.

[Bug 1243399] Re: powers off instead of sleep under KDE4

2013-10-26 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Same here.

/etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh tries to source /usr/share/acpi-support/power-
funcs , which doesn't exist in any package under 13.10 (it did exist in
13.04), and run getXconsole() from it, which would set XUSER.

With XUSER not set, and kded4 not included in the PMS variable,
control will always reach the /sbin/shutdown line when only KDE sessions
are running on the system.

Please find attached an updated version of the script, using logind for
power manager detection instead.

Note that the above patch doesn't check if Powerdevil is loaded by the
user's kded anymore. I can re-add that functionality if you think it's a
worthwhile scenario to account for (personally I don't think it is -
Powerdevil is a mature KDE technology nowadays).

As a bandaid until Saucy is released, you can try using the kernel
packages at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.10-saucy/ ;
they do support the RT5572.

Make sure you install the relevant header packages as well if you're

[Bug 1066308] Re: 0846:9050 Netgear A6200 Wifi USB stick not being recognized

2013-02-13 Thread Antonis Kanouras
For the record, this is an 802.11a/b/g/n/ac USB WiFi adapter based on
the Broadcom BCM43526 chip, for which no Linux driver has appeared yet.

There have been some reports of it partially working (no ac) using
ndiswrapper.

More details at http://www.wikidevi.com/wiki/Netgear_A6200

Disclaimer: I don't have this device, however I was considering buying
it. For the time being, an external wireless bridge seems the only way
for Linux to taste 802.11ac speeds.

[Bug 1096641] Re: Patch to remove Bashism in /usr/share/acpi-support/power-funcs

2013-01-11 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Hello and thanks for the fast reply :)

I guess an argument for it would be for use as a helper in local
scripts.

While writing a local workaround for #467825, it happened to suit my
needs. I would have written a proper one if it didn't exist though.
However, since then I caved in and patched upowerd, meaning I have no
use for it anymore.

Another issue with it is that if it's used by multiple scripts, it'll
only work for the first one that happens to be called by acpid per power
state change.

So it's up to you in the end. If you decide its functionality is useful
indeed, and since I seem to have stirred the waters here :), I could
send you an improved version of it (or of the whole file while I'm at
it).

[Bug 1080554] [NEW] Please set x-www-browser as the default browser

2012-11-18 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Public bug reported:

Hello,

As the title says, it would be nice if x-www-browser was set as the
default browser in Kubuntu.

After a Kubuntu installation, x-www-browser (provided by the Debian
Alternatives system) automatically points to rekonq.
However, if I install Firefox (for example), and set it as the default X
browser system-wide, I would expect KDE to use that as the default browser,
without having to resort to KDE-specific trickery to set it as default for each
user.

Thank you for your time and keep up the great work!

[Bug 612091] Re: please update zaphfc driver to tip of trunk

2011-10-28 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Unfortunately I cannot test this anymore as I had to switch that machine
to Debian Squeeze, which already contained this fix (among others).

Apparently, although with this fix the card is correctly initialised
(pri show spans in the Asterisk console shows PRI span 1/0:
Provisioned, Up, Active), it exhibits severe instability after a while
(loses interrupts, etc.) leading me to believe other parts of DAHDI
needed patching as well.

By all means though, do prepare an SRU, it may work on hardware
configurations other than mine.

[Bug 779840] Re: Kexi: Improve integration with dbusmenu

2011-05-11 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Hello again :)

Well, in the spirit of reducing vertical space wasted, I guess Kexi
could revert to a more traditional menu when it detects dbusmenu in use.

If I did not misread your blog post about the ribbon-like toolbar, menus
can (now?) have their items dynamically added and removed (Firefox does
this, usually right when you click on the menu, and even dbusmenu
supports it, albeit with flickering, according to another bug report).

In any case, I like the toolbar as is so this would be a wishlist item
for me at most.

Cheers,
Antonio

[Bug 779840] [NEW] Kexi: No menus show up when using dbusmenu

2011-05-09 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: koffice

As the title says, when using dbusmenu Kexi only shows a File Close
menu.

Kexi is still using libqt4-qt3support, which may be the reason for this
bug.

I'm not sure if the bug also happens when using Unity, I'm using Plasma
Desktop with the Window Menubar widget.

Running it with UBUNTU_MENUPROXY= still doesn't show a menu bar.

Thank you for your work!

2011-05-09 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Thanks for the fast reply!

I saw some (version 1, as I now understand) Kexi screenshots featuring a
traditional menu with File, Edit, etc. items on Kexi's website and
hastily filed this bug report before digging further.

I actually like the Ribbon-like menu-toolbar, so I'm marking this
invalid.

2011-01-26 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I'm afraid I'm not really sure what caused this.

I installed this Kubuntu Natty system yesterday using netboot and

without libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental installed.

I've already installed libc6-dbg, xserver-xorg-core-dbg xserver-xorg-

[Bug 337377] Re: please restore netselect package: it's _not_ debian-specific

2010-08-28 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Hello, this tool can be used for many purposes other than selecting the
fastest Debian mirror.

For example: Just now I had a big list of IPv6 tunnel brokers and wanted
to find which one of them had the least latency for me.

Please restore it and disable the netselect-apt part of it, which
obviously isn't useful to Ubuntu by default without an Ubuntu mirror
list.

Lastly, you may take the following as a rant: Just because a mirror is
in the same country, it doesn't necessarily mean it's the fastest or
most frequently updated. Right now I'm using nl.archive.ubuntu.com even
though I'm in Greece, as NTUA's mirror broke down once again a few days
ago, and before that, Otenet (my ISP) stopped updating theirs a few
months ago as well.

Antonio

[Bug 612091] Re: please update zaphfc driver to tip of trunk

2010-08-14 Thread Antonis Kanouras
Hello again,

after a long and educational session with quilt, I attach a refreshed
version of the debian/patches/dahdi_linux_extra file.

The only change I made was updating drivers/dahdi/zaphfc/base.c to r7 in
SVN (was r5). It contains two small changes - the first is an additional
header include (linux/sched.h) for building with kernels 2.6.32+ and the
second one is a typo fix (D - DAHDI_D) which did all the damage.

I didn't touch the file debian/patches/zaphfc, as the Debian maintainer
merged all extra driver patches into dahdi_linux_extra in
http://bugs.debian.org/564720 and did not provide a way to automatically
produce it, which I assume means he's going to drop them at a later
stage.

I've tested the resulting package on my system and it seemed ok.

Feel free to ask me if anything else is needed.

Cheers,
Antonio

Attaching a minimal version of the patch which can be applied after
dahdi_linux_extra, in case you prefer it in that form.

Also, disregard what I said about the header include, it actually seems
like a (minimal) fix for kernels 2.6.32.

2010-07-30 Thread Antonis Kanouras
This is evolving to a subject better discussed at the forums by the way,
as this seems to be a misconfiguration in the stacklet.

The hostname is kept by the kernel in /proc/sys/kernel/hostname. In your
case, it is ubuntu.

What hostname -f does, is the equivalent of running

getent hosts `hostname` | awk '{print $2}'

on the command line. If that command doesn't work, hostname -f won't
work either.

Please attach your /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/nsswitch.conf and /etc/hosts

What do you need from OpenSSL that GNUTLS doesn't provide, in this case?

IIRC, Debian maintained the GNUTLS patches for ages so that any GPLed

linking with OpenSSL. I may be wrong though, it's been years since I

[Bug 334191] Re: KDE 4 branch SSL certificates support completely broken

2010-01-15 Thread Antonis Kanouras
** Description changed:

- KDE SSL certificates support in all the KDE 4, 4.1, 4.2 series is
- completely broken. KDE bug : https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162485
+ KDE SSL certificates support in all of the KDE 4.0-4.3 series is completely
broken.
+ KDE bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162485

This impacts (makes impossible) all use of SSL certificates in KDE,
  including KMail.

This is a real show-stopper to me and I can't believe that such a
