It's obviously fixed, but do we need to verify this for each kernel
variant, especially when it makes no sense or even be possible to test
in non-Xen VM environment, such as a Raspberry pi.

[Bug 2056706] [NEW] System unstable, kernel ring buffer flooded with "BUG: Bad page state in process swapper/0"

2024-03-10 Thread Ari Sovijärvi
Public bug reported:

After upgrading a homelab 24.04 test machine from 6.6 to 6.8 kernel that
was recently introduced, the test machine started flooding the terminal
with following messages:

[ 1877.712068] BUG: Bad page state in process swapper/0 pfn:58919

The process name varies and appears to be whatever is currently doing
something. I installed a fresh up to date copy to see if this could be
replicated elsewhere and the outcome is the same. Both of the machines
are VMs running under Xen with XCP-ng, although unsure if it's related.

The issue produces a notable amount of syslog entries. If left running,
the system will eventually go into a state where processes get stuck and
do not react to systemd control, even when there's no notable load, no
memory pressure nor is the disk space low.

Booted back to 6.6 kernel the issue no longer happens.

[Bug 1876632] Re: [nvidia] Corrupted/missing shell textures when switching users or resuming from suspend

2022-05-09 Thread Ari
@Sebastian adding both the kernel parameter and the two lines in the
nvidia module conf file works for "systemctl suspend" - the machine can
now resume OK when on wayland.

Curiously though, when I try systemctl suspend-then-hibernate (my
default way of suspending), I get the following in dmesg:

NVRM: GPU :02:00.0: PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations module parameter
is set. System Power Management attempted without driver procfs suspend
interface. Please refer to the 'Configuring Power Management Support'
section in the driver README.

and suspend does not work (I get a login prompt)

Note that "systemctl hibernate" works fine on wayland and Xorg. Also, on xorg,
systemctl suspend-then-hibernate also works fine.
Could this be a bug on systemd?

2022-05-09 Thread Ari
Unfortunately nvidia.NVreg_EnableS0ixPowerManagement=1 did not work on
an old Asus Rog Maximus VIII mobo (Kabylake), nvidia 1650.

I also tried this:
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-management.conf
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1

and it didn't work either. Missing textures after suspend. Any other
hint?

[Bug 1939612] [NEW] pdl package in focal omits PDL::Graphics::PGPLOT interface

2021-08-11 Thread Ari Mujunen
Public bug reported:

In bionic, pdl package (based on 2.019-5 upstream) had working
PDL::Graphics::PGPLOT interface.

In focal, pdl package is based on 2.020-3 and upstream changed the
generation of PDL::Graphics::PGPLOT interface to only happen if the
build machine has libpgplot* libraries installed.

Thus in focal, the pdl package does not have PDL::Graphics::PGPLOT
interface anymore.

(This seems to affect the Debian/testing pdl package, too, since it is
based on 2.025 upstream version.)

The PDL::Graphics::PGPLOT interface generated (if libpgplot* libraries
are installed build-time) apparently checks for the existence of
libpgplot* libraries in the run-time machine, so it could well be
included in the generated/packaged pdl package.

Could the future updates of pdl package in focal (and later) be built in
an environment where libpgplot* libraries are installed and thus it
would then include the PDL::Graphics::PGPLOT interface?

Similar situation. On Ubuntu Wayland. Using the normal Ubuntu dock,
icons will disappear when browsing the web. Then, GNOME's performance
becomes very poor. Constant lag, as if my DE is running at 5-10 FPS.
Unusable until I logout/in again to restart the session.

Ubuntu 20.10. Dell XPS 7590.

[Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-07-11 Thread Ari
The updated package worked

20.04, GTX 1650
Driver 440.100

Monitor: 4K, 32".

This a new setup - the screen is large enough that 100% is kind of usable,
although the GUI fonts of GTK apps (gnome shell, darktable) was in general too
tiny - with the Trevino's patch I could now set the resolution to 125% but then
found that the ubuntu GUI became too large.
Ideally, I noticed that a of 110% scale or so, like my mac does on the same
screen, works best.

In case it helps anyone: if you prefer scaling at 100% but want larger
fonts in most apps

Gnome Tweaks > Fonts > Scaling Factor = 1.1
Firefox > about:config > layout.css.devPixelsPerPx = 1.1 (Preferences >

[Bug 1886106] [NEW] Compiz put plugin window bounces back when changing viewport if window placed by Grid plugin

2020-07-02 Thread Ari Fogel
Public bug reported:

If you use the Compiz 'grid' plugin to position a window, then change
the viewport of that window with the Compiz 'put' plugin, the window
moves briefly to the new viewport but then immediately bounces back to
the old viewport.

A workaround is to restore the window before putting it to the next
viewport.

The Compiz grid plugin has functionality to avoid this behavior when a
windows's viewport is changed with the Compiz 'expo' plugin, but not the
'put' plugin.

The attached patch to 'put' for compiz-0.9.13.1+18.04.20180302 retrieved
via 'apt source compiz-plugins-default' on Ubuntu 18.04 fixes this
behavior.

[Bug 1848771] Re: Reboot after resume from suspend (deep)

2019-12-01 Thread Ari
I also started having suspend/resume issues with 19.10 after years of flawless
operation.
The issue in my case is intermittent, the machine will sometimes stall while
suspending (after shutting down the video output) and the only way to get the
machine to reboot is a hard reset (sounds similar to post #10 above). This is
on a desktop with suspend enabled.
Sometimes it stalls while resuming, the machine power light is on but it
doesn't output any video and the machine stays unresponsive

stock 5.3 kernel + iwlwifi backport:
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/j6WDwqDJcd/

mainline 5.4rc3: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/VnY6vZvqnC/

mainline 5.4rc3 + backported iwlwifi (there was an error inthe install,
see notes in log): https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/WwpmGmPdvh/

Unfortunately no luck - in all cases the firmware errors out immediately after
loading.
I noticed the 'trigger' is different with the backported iwlwifi.

FWIW I've seen some old reports of people getting AX200 to work on
ubuntu 19.04 using 'mainline kernels' from June/July this year, and also
19.10 some ppl using the chipset on 19.10 daily builds prior to launch -
this is why I decided to upgrade SW + change wifi card.

I also notice that the mainline iwlwifi module looks for firmware 50, then 49,
and finally loads 48 which is the one that ubuntu ships. The one in the kernel
tree is also 48, I wonder if intel keeps a "-next" tree of some sort somewhere
where versions 49/50 could be present.

I found these kernel bug reports:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=205123

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=204821

They both refer to the use of PCI slot adapters triggering the problem,
which do not apply on my case. Motherboard: ASUS Maximus Gene Viii

The issue could be in:

linux-modules-extra-5.3.0-18-generic

(iwlwifi module) rather than in intel's firmware

[Bug 1848831] [NEW] Intel WiFi AX200 firmware loading error resulting in no wifi

2019-10-18 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 19.10 - stock kernel - Intel AX200 PCI card in a desktop PC

uname -a
Linux nahuatl 5.3.0-18-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 8 20:14:06 UTC 2019
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The card is detected OK as dmesg shows, however the card's firmware
fails immediately after loading (see dmesg output below) and wifi
doesn't work at all. Big disappointment since the AX200 chip was
supposed to be supported on 19.10.

Ubuntu includes two ax200 firmware versions, version 48 loads by default
in my system (and fails). I tried version 46 (by renaming the version 48
file) and it failed in the exact same manner

$ ls /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-cc-*
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-cc-a0-46.ucode /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-cc-a0-48.ucode

The card's Bluetooth functionality is also detected and it works fine. It's
just the wifi FW loading what seems broken in ubuntu's 5.3 kernel.

$ rfkill list
0: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no

[Bug 1770948] Re: Mouse cursor size is large and inconsistent on 4K displays in XFCE

2018-10-07 Thread Ari Nordström
I have a Ubuntu 18.04 install on a Dell XPS 9560, 4k screen, with Gnome
and Cinnamon desktops, and also have this problem. While using double
scaling in Cinnamon, the mouse pointer size remains constant and the
desktop usable, but with normal scaling, everything but the mouse
pointer scales down to half size.

No workaround I've seen fixes this. It's maddening because with an
external 4k monitor, I still have to use double scaling or the mouse
pointer will be huge in comparison to the rest of the GUI.

[Bug 1715931] Re: Update to exiv2 version 0.26

2018-09-11 Thread Ari
Thanks Jeremy. It's a bit challenging for anyone doing photography work
with recent hardware. Key apps like darktable and digicam rely on this
library and ubuntu/debian are way behind. Last year's fedora had 0.26.

Flatpaks could help, I tried darktable's and it includes an updated
exiv2, but it has a huge drawback, OpenCL doesnt work with flatpaks (or
snaps) yet, so its useless in my case (my photography workstation is
built specifically for photo editing with opencl)

I guess there is no choice but to try and build exiv2 manually and hope
the system doesnt break :)

Exiv2 0.25 as used by ubuntu 18.04 and the upcoming 18.10 is really
obsolete and this brings all kinds of annoying problems with darktable -
inability to recognize lenses and so on.

Even the current package in 18.10 is obsolete.

[Bug 1753470] Re: Postconf segfaults every 5 minutes

2018-03-07 Thread Ari Sovijärvi
I finally found the actual culprit. It's a Munin-plugin that gets
Postfix statistics, it calls postconf to figure out Postfix paths.

While the issue is now clear, I think the symptom is still out there,
you can crash postconf if you run it with a user that doesn't have
permissions to read every included file in main.cf.

[Bug 1753470] Re: Postconf segfaults every 5 minutes

2018-03-07 Thread Ari Sovijärvi
I think I got it now.

Postconf can't read valiases.cf as user Postfix. I changed the file
ownership and permission to allow group postfix to read it, which makes
running postconf as user postfix work now.

Curiously the segfault still happens every 5 minutes.

[Bug 1753470] Re: Postconf segfaults every 5 minutes

2018-03-07 Thread Ari Sovijärvi
After some "yank out lines until the issue stops" detective work, I
think I've traced the issue to be this line in Postfix's main.cf:

virtual_alias_maps = pgsql:/etc/postfix/valiases.cf

valiases.cf is very basic example of PostgreSQL based alias maps
configuration:

query = SELECT real_address from tempmail where time_expires>now() and
temp_address='%s';
user = username-here
password = password-here
dbname = postfix
hosts = ip-here

Postfix-pgsql is naturally installed and Postfix looks up aliases in the
database just fine.

The AppArmor error message appears to be related to already reported
but, and is unrelated. Stunnel was work-in-progress so that's not a
problem. Livepatchd doesn't start because 18.04 doesn't currently have
Live patch support yet.

[Bug 1753470] Re: Postconf segfaults every 5 minutes

2018-03-06 Thread Ari Sovijärvi
The problem leaves no traces in any of the logs, but then again I can't
find anything that wouldn't work either. Postfix works just fine.
There's no crontab jobs or anything that would fire sending a message or
anything, besides sending messages works fine as well, with no error
messages. It's just these two messages every 5 minutes.

[Bug 1753470] [NEW] Postconf segfaults every 5 minutes

2018-03-05 Thread Ari Sovijärvi
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of 18.04 server. Every 5 minutes postconf segfaults:

Mar 5 14:30:05 hostname-here kernel: [ 672.082204] postconf[12975]: segfault
at 40 ip 564d613ff053 sp 7ffc39e19b90 error 4 in

at 40 ip 55b29d0f8053 sp 7fff72f4b740 error 4 in
postconf[55b29d0e+25000]

According to Apport log, the crash is caused by following command line:

postconf -h queue_directory

Running the command in shell however works as expected and lists the
default spool directory (/var/spool/postfix).

Public bug reported:

Got a message of a problem with the package "libertine" during the
upgrade from Ubuntu Gnome 16.10 to 17.04 final beta, but the upgrade was
finished anyway. This automated error report seems to think it was a
fresh install, but it was an upgrade. I don't know if it's related, but
after the upgrade the boot goes to loop with the latest available kernel
4.10.0-13, but boots normally with 4.8.0-41 (which I'm using now). The
last point of the loop is Stopping User Manager for UID 121...

I'm experiencing this on Ubuntu 16.10. The file system is non-encrypted.

Thanks Felix Moreno for the "crappy" solution to get around the problem.
It seems to work fine. I didn't see the solution offered in any any
other discussions that I read around the web.

[Bug 1316651] Re: Compiz' Put plugin makes random mistakes in moving maximize windows between displays

2016-11-08 Thread Ari Fogel
This bug has plagued me for years. In addition to when the window is
maximized, a window will bounce back if the window was previously placed
by the Compiz Grid plugin. The workaround is to restore the window
before putting it to the next output. However, this is obnoxious. I
can't believe this bug has not been fixed in all these years.

[Bug 1631560] Re: Narrow spacing of icons in Files affects file names

2016-10-16 Thread Ari Torhamo
@ Sebastian Bacher: I found an existing bug report about this problem at Gnome
Bugzilla, and I added my comment to it:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745968
The report and the latest comment are a year and a half old, but the bug is
marked as new. I guess it's better not to expect a quick patch.

@ dino99: Thanks for the workaround, dino99. It alleviated the problem
somewhat. It would help more if I'd decrease the font size further, but
the text would get too small then.

[Bug 1631560] [NEW] Narrow spacing of icons in Files affects file names

2016-10-07 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

When I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.10 beta a few days ago, horizontal distance
between icons in Files and on the desktop got much smaller. Because of
this there's less room horizontally for the file names, and many words
got their last letters cut off to the next row. In many file names full
rows now alternate with rows of only a couple of cut off letters. Name
fields with longer file names also look disproportionately narrow and
tall now. I think the spacing should be changed back to what it was, or
at least it should be user selectable.

[Bug 1582200] Re: citrix does not start

2016-05-21 Thread Ari Börde Kröyer
I have the same issue and I have tried to add info about my system,
following the instructions in help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs to
gather information about my system and the firefox package. This did not
work as it should. I then did:

apport-cli -f -p firefox --save bug.apport

followed by:

ubuntu-bug -c bug.apport -u 1582200

This however, produced the message:

/usr/share/apport/apport-gtk:16: PyGIWarning: Wnck was imported without
specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('Wnck', '3.0') before import
to ensure that the right version gets loaded.
from gi.repository import GLib, Wnck, GdkX11, Gdk
Usage: ubuntu-bug [valg] [symptom|pid|pakke|programsti|.apport/.crash-fil]

ubuntu-bug: error: -u/--update-bug option cannot be used together with
options for a new report

And so, I am stuck. If anyone can help, I will gladly complete the
process.

[Bug 1562948] Re: google-earth not working - broken package with Xenial Xerus

2016-04-22 Thread Ari Torhamo
@ Cip Man

Your installation instruction worked for me on Ubuntu 16.04, thank you.
Your solution for the Africa problem worked for a couple of searches,
but now every search takes me to Africa again. Giving the sed command
again doesn't help. Quickly looking everything else seems to work fine.
Any ideas? Running Google Earth from the terminal gives the following
error messages:

[Bug 1568518] [NEW] 16.04 bootable usb install issues: partitioning

2016-04-10 Thread Ari Börde Kröyer
Public bug reported:

I have isntalled xenial on two different laptops (Compaq and HP) and
encountered the same problem both times:

When choosing to "wipe entire disk" and do a clean install I
subsequently get an error message that says the installer was unable to
format swap partition. The only way I have found to circumvent this
issue is to do an advanced install and specify the partitioning scheme
manually. The installation procedure then continues in the normal way.

(There is also a problem when specifying keyboard layout. I will report
this as a separate bug.)

Regards,
Ari

[Bug 1160289] Re: Google earth search does not zoom onto a location

2016-01-16 Thread Ari Torhamo
I'd like to add to madvinegar's instruction that to make the script
executable in graphical user interface, you need to start nautilus with
root privileges with 'gksu nautilus' (you have to give that command in
the terminal). 'Sudo nautilus' doesn't seem to work properly, at least
not for me. If you don't have gksu installed, you can find it in Ubuntu
Software Center. I'm not an expert, but this worked for me.

Perhaps it would be a good idea include madvinegar's solution to the
Google Earth installation instruction in help.ubuntu.com, or some other
fitting place, as a large part of the users may suffer from this bug. It
might be good to adjust it a little to make it more approachable for
users with little command line experience. I hesitate to do it myself,
as I'm not so well versed myself.

2015-11-17 Thread Ari Torhamo
I have experienced this bug as long as I can remember, years anyway. My
hardware has changed completely during that time, but the bug stays :-)

I haven't let send the automatic bug report often, because I have
thought that sending too many of them annoys the developers. Would it be
better to send them all, or perhaps one every week or couple so that the
developers know that the bug still exists ?

I'm using 15.10 now, and currently the crash happens at every boot.

[Bug 1512851] [NEW] No network error when making call

2015-11-03 Thread Ari Börde Kröyer
Public bug reported:

When the dialer app is not running and I get redirected to it in order
to make a call, the first time I hit the "call" button I invariably get
the error message: "no network" even though the phone is connected to
the GSM network. (My phone has the language set to Norwegian, so I am
guessing this is the English equivalent to the message I get.)

Here is what I do in detail:
- I choose a number from the contacts list
- I hit the phone icon next to the number to make a call,
- the dialer app screen opens
- I hit the "call" button,
- message "no network"

The status bar at the top shows the phone has a GSM connection the whole
time.

When I try again a couple of seconds later, the call gets placed
normally.

The same thing happens when switching from the messaging app to the
dialer in order to call the person I have been texting.

However, if I wait a moment after entering the dialer before pressing
the "call" button, everything runs normally.

If the dialer-app is already active in the background when the
redirection happens, the bug does not occur.

Some kind of slow start issue? Screen appearing before the app is
actually ready to take the command?

Re: [Bug 1429887] Re: Sometimes need 3 power button presses to turn on screen

2015-10-31 Thread Ari Börde Kröyer
Update:

I have tested this some more now and it seems like the delay from
pressing the power button until the screen comes on gets longer the
longer the time lapse since the phone was last booted.

Yesterday, I had the following experience:

  * With the phone on and screen off, I pressed the power button and
waited...
  * After more than 3 full minutes I gave up and pressed once more. The
screen flashed on for a second and switced off.
  * Approximately 7-10s later I pressed the power button again. The
screen did not light up.
  * This time I waited for 4 minutes before giving up and pressing the
button again. The screen flashed on for a second and switced off.
  * Again, I waited a few seconds before pressing the button once more.
The screen remained dark.
  * By now my patience was gone and I only waited 10-15s before pressing
the buttong again, causing the screen to flash on-off like before. I
then immediately pressed one more time and it came on.
  * When trying to unlock the screen there was an awful lagging behavior.
  * I decided to switch the phone completely off.
  * I then restarted the phone. Once it was on, I switched off the
screen, waited a short while and pressed the button to switch it on.
This time it came on right away.

This is not the first time the phone has performed normally right after
switching it on (after switching completely off).

It is my impression than both the current bug as well as the tendency to
lag when swiping across the screen and when scrolling, manifest
themselves more the longer the time lapse since the last time the phone
was powered on.

I hope this helps to narrow down the cause. Good luck!

Best regards,
Ari

Hi Michael,

I just tested, but so far only three times.

1st time: Screen came on after 17s showing the "turn off / restart /
cancel" dialogue box. This, incidentally, is something I often get when
switching on the screen.

2nd time: Screen came on normally after 15s.

3rd time: Screen came on after 1s (i.e. right away).

I will check some more and give an update tomorrow around the same time.

[Bug 1480924] [NEW] fglrx-core 2:15.200-0ubuntu4.1: fglrx-core kernel module failed to build

After putting in the Ati card, there were no displaydrivers available in

because automatic error reporting was triggered. Software Center says
fxlrx is installed.

[Bug 1447199] [NEW] Qt 5.2.1 QtGraphicalEffects missing

2015-04-22 Thread Ari Hyttinen
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04 is missing QtGraphicalEffects module. Interestingly, the
doc packages for it exist:

  apt-cache search qtgraphicaleffects
  qtgraphicaleffects5-doc-html - Qt 5 graphicaleffects HTML documentation
  qtgraphicaleffects5-doc - Qt 5 graphical effects documentation

Missing module leads to this kind of run time error messages when
running QML apps trying to use it:

  file:///home/user/work/project/qml/MyElement.qml:2:1: module
"QtGraphicalEffects" is not installed
 import QtGraphicalEffects 1.0
 ^

In later versions of Ubuntu, there is package
  qml-module-qtgraphicaleffects
but this does not exist in Ubuntu 14.04

Note: this module is indeed part of Qt 5.2.1, and it is found if Qt
5.2.1 is installed some other way, such as using binary Linux installers
provided by Qt Project.

[Bug 1445133] [NEW] Ubuntu phone: Power button - screen wakeup bug

2015-04-16 Thread Ari Börde Kröyer
Public bug reported:

I have experienced the issue below on my Nexus 4 since October 2014. Now
it has appeared on my Bq Aquaris e4.5 approximately 3 weeks after I got
the phone. I am currently running Ubuntu 14.10 (r20).

Often, but not always, when pushing the power button to make the screen wake
up, nothing happens. After waiting a few seconds, I push the button again
and the screen wakes up for a fraction of a second and then turns off. The
behavior suggests that the second time the button was pushed it was
registered as a "switch off screen" command. This can repeat itself a few
times. Usually, I have to push the button slightly harder/more decisively
(perhaps a hint longer) in order for the screen to wake up and stay on. The
screen will eventually come on after pushing the power button an odd number of
times, never after an even number. Very annoying!

I have tried just waiting for the screen to come on after initially
pushing the power button, but my patience usually wears out after 10-15
seconds. I once waited for half a minute.

[Bug 1440535] [NEW] Hashtag '#' missing on dialer keyboard

2015-04-05 Thread Ari Börde Kröyer
Public bug reported:

I am unable to access the hashtag '#' character on the dialer app
keyboard. I am now running the latest stable release (r20) on the
Aquaris e4.5, but I have had the same problem since October '14, running
previous releases on my Nexus 4.

The hashtag is frequently required as an "end of field" delimiter when
entering numbers in response to automatic phone answering services in my
country of residence (Norway). Not being able to access this character
makes it impossible to enter the correct response to such services (i.e.
some mobile bank services, ticket ordering services and many others). As
a result I have had to leave merchandise at the counter when my account
balance was too low, because I was unable to transfer funds on the spot
using my cell phone.

I hope this can be fixed very soon. Thank you!

Ari

[Bug 1236922] Re: Xorg crashes with SIGABRT in pixman_blt() after using Synapse for a while

2014-11-09 Thread Ari
Hey Brian,

thanks for your comment. It's been a while since I've reported this bug.
Luckily I've been able to resolve it by switching over to the open-
source radeon drivers. Haven't had a crash of this sort (or any X.org
crash for that matter) for almost a year now!

You said that switching graphics drivers didn't work for you, but the
open-source radeon drivers have come a long way over the past couple of
years. If you are still experiencing this issue on your WM of choice and
holding out on Cinnamon, I'd recommend giving the FOSS drivers another
try.

[Bug 1168224] Re: 045e:0745 [HP TouchSmart tm2t-2200] No scancode for several keys of Microsoft Comfort Desktop 5000

I cloned the linux-input repo, did a git log for the paths starting with "F:"
above, filtered for commits in the last 6 months, and filtered out authors
that were only responsible for merge commits. This leaves me with a list of 68
authors.. I would very much like to avoid creating a shitstorm by bothering all
these people unnecessarily, so I just want to confirm with you that this is the
appropriate methodology for finding the appropriate people to contact before
firing off these emails.

[Bug 1168224] Re: 045e:0745 [HP TouchSmart tm2t-2200] No scancode for several keys of Microsoft Comfort Desktop 5000

2014-10-04 Thread Ari Fogel
Christopher,
Thank you for timely response. The best practice you refer to in comment #48
seems to apply to "regression"s. I don't know precisely what "regression"
refers to in this context, but I assumed it meant something along the "a bug
that was introduced after not existing in a previous commit". According to this
assumed definition, I didn't think this was a regression. That fact, combined
with the ubiquitous warnings about "negative unintended consequences," made me
decide against emailing anyone else. Since the warning about such consequences
still seems salient, I must ask: Is this in fact a "regression"? What is a
"regression" in this context?

[Bug 1168224] Re: 045e:0745 [HP TouchSmart tm2t-2200] No scancode for several keys of Microsoft Comfort Desktop 5000

2014-10-02 Thread Ari Fogel
In comment #43, I mentioned that I filed another report (this time to
linux-input). Actually, I just discovered that I had filed a similar report
over a year ago to linux-input. For whatever reason, the old report did not
come up when I searched (which is why I filed the new one),, but was listed as
"previous in thread" with respect to the new report. There are no other
messages in the thread.
So it seems that this bug was ignored for more than a year. Is this what is to
be expected when filing kernel bugs? Not a jab at anyone here, but is there
really any point in me taking time out of my busy schedule to file bugs and do
all this testing when no one with the power to fix anything even bothers to
even respond? This is very disheartening to say the least.
@Christopher, do you have any advice on what to do at this point?

2014-10-01 Thread Ari Fogel
Note that one of the keys I reported as not working actually works in
this latest kernel version (3.17.0-031700rc7-generic):. the key to the
right of the right-alt key. Its keycode is 135. Unfortunately, I could
not deduce its role, since I was unable to run any commands
(specifically xev) using a graphical login (mouse moved, but keyboard
buttons did nothing). I found the keycode by doing ctrl-alt-f1 to open
up a pseudoterminal, then logging in and using showkey. This key does
not raise any events with my current kernel version however
(3.13.0-36-generic).

CORRECTION: the keycode is not 135; that was the key next to it, which
already worked. However, II did find a keycode using the latest kernel.
I will update shortly with the actual keycode.
