[Bug 957606] Re: external speakers are quiet

2020-03-05 Thread Bartek Krzywania
Hey!
Thank you for picking up this issue!
I have long forgotten about this issue. :-) That hardware + such old Ubuntu
release has not been used for long long..

You can close this issue as no longer relevant.
Thanks!
Bart

[Bug 595138] Re: Settings in /etc/hdparm.conf are not applied during boot

2018-02-01 Thread Bartek Krol
I fixed this by using this patch
(https://launchpadlibrarian.net/73763550/hdparm-functions.patch) that
translates (unlinks) HDD path symlink inside /etc/hdparm.conf to
/dev/sdX

but I also had to create this patch to the /lib/udev/hdparm, because I had to:
1) convert (readlink) DEVNAME input parameter to hdparm_options function in
'/lib/hdparm/hdparm-functions' - this fixes issue when as input to
/lib/udev/hdparm someone puts symlink
2) trim the trailing digits from the DEVNAME, because the udev rule puts disk
device as well as partitions as input into the /lib/udev/hdparm

Example scenario I had:
1) udev rule runs /lib/udev/hdparm and passes /dev/sda1 as DEVNAME => outcome
was that /dev/sda1 was not in /etc/hdparm.conf which made it apply DEFAULT
settings
2) udev rule runs /lib/udev/hdparm and passes /dev/sda as DEVNAME => outcome
was that /dev/sda was in /etc/hdparm.conf which made it apply CORRECT settings
3) udev rule runs /lib/udev/hdparm and passes /dev/sda2 as DEVNAME => outcome
was that /dev/sda2 was not in /etc/hdparm.conf which made it apply DEFAULT
settings

All in all, for me, between reboots, the order was random. Sometimes the
disk came last and applied correct settings and sometimes partition came
into play and was overwriting the /etc/hdparm.conf with the DEFAULTS

I could test this problem with 4.0 kernel, but I'm on 14.04, and there is no
4.0 kernel for this version.
Will http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-rc5-vivid/ even work?

Confirmed.

stable and unstable). I have rev 07 GPU (GM45/Core 2 Duo)
It worked fine on 14.04. Tested on Unity and Gnome 3.14.

Settings chrome://flags/#ignore-gpu-blacklist doesn't help.

[Bug 1256128] Re: [Acer Aspire G7711, Realtek ALC888] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2013-11-30 Thread Bartek Bobko
When headphones plugged in the front panel:
# hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x1b GET_PIN_SENSE 0
nid = 0x1b, verb = 0xf09, param = 0x0
value = 0x8000

When unplugged:
# hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x1b GET_PIN_SENSE 0
nid = 0x1b, verb = 0xf09, param = 0x0
value = 0x0

Setting this before lightdm starts:
echo "trigger_sense = false" > /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/reconfig
makes sound mute, on the speakers and on the headphones.

There is a problem in gnome-countrol-center's Sound settings related to
headphone detection:
"Headphones - Built-in Audio" keeps appearing and disappearing when any sound
plays. This was happening on Ubuntu 13.04 also, but there was no problem with
sound like here in 13.10.

[Bug 1256128] Re: [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel, playback] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2013-11-28 Thread Bartek Bobko
I believe the "Permission denied" is another issue - somehow created
"pulse" dir was owned by the root, and no sound could be played (from
some apps at least).

The sound is crackling on LiveCD as much as after installation.

[Bug 1006994] Re: package pdns-backend-mysql 3.0-1.1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2013-04-16 Thread Bartek Bulzak
So in my case it seems like the new kernel gave priority to the Intel
card and that's why my screen no longer worked. I fixed this by adding
"radeon.modeset=1 video=LVDS:1600x900" to my kernel cmdline in grub.
This forces the ATI driver to take over and things are back to how they
were before.

[Bug 1158562] Re: system will not start after updating to kernel 3.5.0-27

2013-04-16 Thread Bartek Bulzak
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1167114 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1167114

Same problem. The default 12.10 install with 3.5.0-17-generic boots
fine, but the latest kernel/initrd 3.5.0.27-generic gets me into a black
screen on boot, I do not even see the ubuntu splash screen after grub.

This is a HP Pavilion dv7 laptop with Intel switchable graphics. On
windows 8 this computer has similar problems as soon as the ATI graphics
drivers get installed. I supposed that this is something similar.

I'm sorry, but I'm unable to test for this bug as I'm not using Ubuntu
anymore. Due to this bug, and also to 3-year old bugs in USB stack that
prevented almost any USB device from running correctly, I had to switch
to Windows 7, as those bugs rendered my system practically unusable.
Issues with AMD video card/chipset also didn't help.

As soon as I hear AMD starts really supporting its products, and
kernel's USB stack stops losing its marbles, I'll be more than happy to
test Ubuntu one more time.

[Bug 880485] Re: System hangs at startup when battery reported as "low"

2011-11-07 Thread Bartek Brzeziński
I see symptoms of this bug on amd64, only in different circumstances -
now it manifests itself when the battery is fully charged. Sometimes it
takes several attempts to boot the system, with plugging/unplugging the
power cord, closing the lid etc. Also, I'm getting the "Power critical
low" dialog when plugging/unplugging the netbook while the battery is
fully charged.

[Bug 880485] Re: System hangs at startup when battery reported as "low"

2011-10-26 Thread Bartek Brzeziński
The bug exists in RC mainline kernel.

Holding shift/pressing ESC didn't bring the grub menu, so the bug is
either not in the kernel (grub? bootstrap?), or it prevents grub from
even displaying kernel menu.

For reasons I'd rather not disclose :) , I'm apparently running wrong
arch (i386 while I should be running amd64), so I'll reinstall Ubuntu
and see if the bug is reproductable on amd64 as well.

[Bug 880485] Re: System hangs at startup when battery reported as "low"

2011-10-25 Thread Bartek Brzeziński
OK, here's what I did.

I have installed mainline kernel 3.1.0-030100rc10-generic #201110200610
SMP . After reboot, I was not presented with usual grub menu with
installed kernerls to choose, instead system hung. Another reboot didn't
change anything. After replugging the netbook while hung and hard
restart, the system didn't start either (symptoms identical as above -
blank screen). Then I have powered off the netbook, unplugged it,
plugged again, powered on and it started OK, again no grub menu. Yet,
the system started with new kernel. I have unplugged the netbook and
restarted the system, and it booted again ok, with new kernel. I did it
twice on battery and now it starts ok, I'm unable to reproduce the bug.

I'll try to charge the battery, then drain it until battery icon turns
red again and then see if I'm able to reproduce the bug.

I did try to upload that nifty report attachments with apport-collect,
but I'm not sure if it worked.

[Bug 774203] Re: Brasero makes coasters when using the Burn Directly To Disk option

2011-09-16 Thread Bartek Celary
This bug has been reported months ago and nothing happened since. I'd
like to stress that Brasero is rubbish unless it JUST WORKS. I have just
made a few shiny coasters on a few PCs with Ubuntu (3 of them actually)
as I couldn't believe this could be a software fault... No one releases
burning software that is not capable of doing its main goal -- burning
discs! Why adding this functionality when it fails on every PC?

BTW, not sure if the disc writing facility integrated with Nautilus is
also backed up by Brasero but that also failed for me... All the
coasters are not recognized by the DVD reader on any PC (also checked
with Windows)...

[Bug 813200] Re: VT6656 wireless chipset driver cannot authenticate with AP

2011-08-09 Thread Bartek Celary
Quote from here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10812041&postcount=30

I tried booting with the 2.6.35-28 kernel from Maverick, and it appears
to work fine. Seems like there's a regression in the vt6656_stage driver
somewhere between 2.6.35-28 and 2.6.38-8.

In case someone is looking into it.

Thanks.

[Bug 710744] Re: after installing PAE kernel NVIDIA driver does not work - no GUI

2011-06-07 Thread Bartek Celary
BTW, for anyone who is interested in getting this to work:

(quoting solution from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1741754)

"[The] problem is that you have the nvidia driver installed as a deb
package but not the driver itself, for which you need the kernel
headers.

Install the package kernel-headers-blabla corresponding to your current
kernel (see uname -a). Then do install --reinstall of the nvidia package
or install --reinstall of the linux kernel - this will force the
creation of the nvidia kernel module. Reboot.

Those commands:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic-pae
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic-pae"

[Bug 710744] Re: after installing PAE kernel NVIDIA driver does not work - no GUI

2011-06-07 Thread Bartek Celary
I was able to get PAE kernel to work with just installing the kernel
headers. Why it is not isntalled as a dependency?

The problem reappeared after today's kernel update which left me again
without nvidia module compiled. I have switched to non-PAE kernel for
now until this bug is resolved.

[Bug 749429] [NEW] Empathy sends too many notifications

2011-04-03 Thread Bartek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Empathy is sending a new notification for every message. So, for example
if user johnsm...@hotmail.com will send 7 messages like "message1",
"message3", etc. Empathy will show 7 notifications. Better idea would be
to add a new message to existing notification, so the notifications
aren't annoying like in pidgin.

[Bug 738201] [NEW] Icons in notification area duplicated

2011-03-19 Thread Bartek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

When i start my netbook sometimes ONE icon is duplicated in notification
area. One of them is working, and the other one is just an icon, can't
click it or anything. Right clicking it gets me to gnome-panel "right-
click menu", so i guess gnome-panel itself is causing this problem.

[Bug 629153] Re: wmf2XXX tools fail due to defoma font issue

2011-01-28 Thread Bartek Celary
Is there a workaround?

This bug also affects imagemagick's convert program. It is throwing the
same message (probably due to its usage of the mentioned library).

Re: [Bug 666014] Re: Avahi service for squid-deb-proxy does not start

2011-01-12 Thread Bartek Celary
Looks like from the service perspective it is working fine. Both services
got up and running without issue.

However in my case I had to purge/reinstall avahi-* stuff to get avahi
discovery working properly.

Thanks for the fix.

[Bug 666014] [NEW] Avahi service for squid-deb-proxy does not start

2010-10-24 Thread Bartek Celary
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: squid-deb-proxy

Here's the summary of the problem after system startup:

% sudo service squid-deb-proxy status
squid-deb-proxy start/running, process 1297

% sudo service squid-deb-proxy-avahi status
squid-deb-proxy-avahi stop/waiting

As we see the squid-deb-proxy avahi advertiser does not start and no
machine can see we have a deb proxy around. Both dependencies (avahi and
squid-deb-proxy services) are running in my case. If I do 'service
squid-deb-proxy-avahi start' it goes up without a problem... I have
worked around it so the upstart script starts the advertising without
squid going up but this is not a solution obviously. I've tried to check
what could be wrong with the upstart script but there does not appear to
be any good documentation or manual for upstart scripting... thus I have
no clue why the script fails to start squid-deb-proxy-avahi... Here's
how it looks:

description "squid-deb-proxy-avahi"

start on (squid-deb-proxy and avahi-daemon)
stop on stopping squid-deb-proxy

# get it back with
# avahi-browse -prt _apt_proxy._tcp
script
  PORT=$(grep http_port /etc/squid-deb-proxy/squid-deb-proxy.conf|cut -d' ' -f2)
  if [ -n "$PORT" ] && [ -x /usr/bin/avahi-publish ]; then
exec avahi-publish -s "Squid deb proxy" _apt_proxy._tcp $PORT
  fi
end script%

[Bug 246981] Re: drag and drop to nautilus desktop places icons in random spot

2010-10-01 Thread Bartek
The issue in the gnome bug has been fixed (dragging text now creates a
file at the cursor position). The bug still manifests itself in other
drag and drop actions such the file-roller extraction mentioned above or
when dragging a download link onto the desktop.

[Bug 633255] [NEW] gnome volume control applet does not update hardawre volume if starting from mute

2010-09-08 Thread Bartek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

This is on a fully updated 9.10
gnome-media:
  Installed: 2.28.1-0ubuntu1

When I increase the volume via my mouse using the applet (ie: left click
and then drag the slider upwards) and the volume level is at 0% the
actual volume coming out of the speakers is only updated once I release
the drag. This is very annoying because one will instinctively move the
slider further and further and upon release be greeted with really loud
sound.

When the volume level is anything other than 0% it updates in real time.
My guess is that the "unmute" event is linked to the button release
event on the slider. (depending on your hardware you can even hear the
thing being unmuted when you release the mouse button)

I have this problem in the final release of Ubuntu 10.04.
I've removed fd0 from /etc/fstab and disabled in BIOS floppy drive.

And it works;) ubuntu is faster than ever, in the "Computer Nautilus

And what is most importart - I have no floppy drive in my notebook.

Best Regards.

[Bug 109943] Re: Thunderbird: high CPU while sending email

2010-03-30 Thread Bartek
Reopening because the bug still exists and the source is almost
definitely the small progress bar at the lower right-hand corner of the
Thunderbird window. To narrow it down I would propose for the people
having the problem to report their graphics hardware and the cpu usage
from top when the problem occurs.

I see:

thunderbird ~30-50%
Xorg ~20%

on an intel GM45 chipset

I would also rename the bug to reflect that it's not just when sending
mail but also when getting new messages. (in short: whenever the
progress bar is active)
