I'm seeing the same problem on Natty, fully patched. This is a netbook on a university wifi system. [Bug 856314] Re: very slow internet connection with brcmsmac driver
I'm having what may be a related problem. I frequently can't connect with my broadcom 4313, and when connected the internet essentially doesn't work. This also did not occur on previous Ubuntu versions or on a Windows install. I think this qualifies as a high-priority issue, as it's a total show- stopper for anyone with a broadcom 4313 card (see this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1840519), and there are a fair number of them. I should also probably mention that of the four laptops I work with, this error only occurs on the one which doesn't automatically resume upon the lid being opened. On the machine with the error, my Asus 1015PEM netbook, it won't resume unless I press a button after opening the lid. My other three machines resume simply by the lid being opened. [Bug 503372] Re: Evince doesn't retain settings in Lucid
There's a workaround, but it's another program - Okular. In synaptic install Okular. Once Okular is open press F7 to turn off the sidebar. Then go to Settings, Configure Okular, and remove the check next to Show hints and info messages. Next, in Nautilus right-click on any pdf. Click properties, then Open with, and click the radio button next to Okular and close. Finally open up firefox, go to edit, preferences, and click on applications. Next to PDF document pull down the menu and click use other. Click the pencil at the top left and paste into the new textbox /usr/bin/okular. [Bug 243865] [NEW] Memos should not have start date by default
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution In Evolution, memos have a start date by default. However, most memos are not time sensitive. When at the combined Calendar/Task/Memo view, one might want to have all the memos there regardless of the day they were created. This cannot be done at the moment. A solution is to disable a start date by default, and perhaps have a an option if one wishes to have an automatic start date. The behaviour proposed here is already present for the tasks, and as tasks are often more-time sensitive than memos, it would seem logical to synchronize the behaviour of the two with no start date. This also prevents confusion for the user, as at the moment all tasks remain in calendar view, no matter what day one is on. However memos appear and disappear depending on whether one is in the calendar range in which they were created. Yet some of the discs that rip slowly don't appear to have any damage, etc. Very odd, but there we go! -- Slow CD ripping (Sound Juicer) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129383 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 203759] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] Open office appears to complete spell check when no spell check dictionary is installed
I can confirm this bug. Though I know the priority of this bug might appear low at first, it's actually a bug of at least moderate, if not more, concern. Most people use their computer to type documents at some point or other, and expect spell checking on the fly as expected behaviour. Joe user likely wouldn't have a clue how to install a new dictionary, or perhaps even change to the installed UK or other dictionary in Openoffice. Given that there are likely at least a few thousand Joe users floating around Canada, a few thousand people are likely to either stop using Ubuntu or get really frustrated with the experience. Often these are people who just want to get work done, and had their computer setup by someone else who's now long gone. The easy temporary fix for this is to simply have the program use the UK dictionary. It's already installed by default, and is so similar to Canadian English that hardly any users would notice the difference. Or perhaps copy the UK package, point Ubuntu to the copy that would be called Canadian in the repos, and worry later about making the dictionary truly Canadian. Again, Canadian English and UK English are very similarl, so changing that would be a very low priority indeed. -- [Upstream] [hardy] Open office appears to complete spell check when no spell check dictionary is installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203759 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime
I likewise must concur. I strongly support the open source movement, and like to help people switch to open source solutions on their computer. As other distributions continue to fix this problem, and Ubuntu doesn't, I'll have to tell them to avoid Ubuntu like the plague and install the distributions with the fixes pre-installed. I really don't want to have to do this. However, I'm simply going to have to do so because if there's one distribution that won't destroy someone's hard drive, and another that will, it would be irresponsible of me to give them something that would trash their computer and data. This is quite possibly the most important bug in Ubuntu right now. If a fix is not forthcoming quickly, I'll simply have to stop installing Ubuntu on other computers, and cease using it myself so that I can be familiar with the distribution that I help others install. Please fix this bug before I'm forced to leave this otherwise excellent community. [Bug 92693] Re: openoffice 2.2 has a serious problem with font rendering in Ubuntu 7.04
To add to what Jaile said, you can get Best Shapes to operate in Openoffice while having subpixel smoothing in the rest of your apps. Before starting Openoffice, change from Subpixel Smoothing to Best shapes under Appearance PreferencesFonts. Once Openoffice is loaded, switch back to Subpixel Smoothing. The rest of your apps will have subpixel smoothing, but Openoffce will keep the nicer looking fonts from Best Shapes, even in new openoffice windows. Thus one could develop a very easy temporary fix for this by simple having openoffice switch to best shapes on load, and switch back after load is complete. I can't imagine that would be too hard to add, and would fix a serious problem I'd suggest this is a more serious than the bug importance rating presently indicates. I'd imagine most people using Ubuntu use a word processor on a fairly regular basis, and most people use LCD monitors, making the subpixel smoothing option the best choice in many cases. Thus since the majority of Ubuntu users are affected by a bug that seriously affects the usability of a primary application (staring at the ugliest font rendering I've ever seen for hours on end DOES affect usability considerably), I'd suggest raising this to High at the least. Also, the title of the bug should be changed, as Openoffice is now at 2.3 and Ubuntu is at 7.10 or 8.04 depending. People should be aware this is an active bug, but the title does not indicate it. -- openoffice 2.2 has a serious problem with font rendering in Ubuntu 7.04 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92693 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime
I've thought of a couple of other things we could try. First off, if EXT3 is writing more often than is optimal, could we have reports from people who use other file systems like JFS or XFS or ReiserFS? If changing the file system makes a big difference, it might be a solution. I've read that JFS, XFS and ReiserFS can have superior performance characteristics in many cases, and those who would be impacted by ext3 not being present (system admins who depend on ext3 for specific backup utilities, etc) would probably know enough to select the correct partition type for their unique work at installation. Also, as a quick and easy test we could try installing powertop from the repositories. When the program boots up (sudo powertop), it gives a bunch of suggestions. We could simply try accepting each one of its suggestions (you can usually make the change by hitting a single key when prompted), and then monitor our hard drives for a few minutes to see how frequently they're loading. This might be a quick way for a number of us to identify what works for our drives without a lot of command line work, which some people might understandably shy away from. These are just a few thoughts, let's see what comes of them! If this doesn't work, perhaps the best thing to do is contact the hard drive manufacturers. After all, they design the drives, and know what sort of behaviour the drives should be exhibiting. [Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime
Hi Akshay, I noticed that the ugly fix posted earlier didn't work too well for me either, perhaps my machine wasn't detecting whether it was plugged in or not. I simply put hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda into the ugly fix file suggested, instead of the longer version which detects whether the machine is plugged in or not. I then did the install procedure as suggested, and It seemed to correct it for my machine. Does this command: sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda do anything for your machine at the command line? Have you tried changing 254 to 255? For some people that seems to help. Also, perhaps trying changing sda to hda, or depending on whether it's a second drive, change it to sdb or hdb. If this doesn't work, I'd suggest going to the hard drive manufacturer's web site, and downloading their hard drive configuration tools. You can determine your hard drive type by going to SystemPreferencesHardware Information. My hard drive type is located under 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA AHCI Controller. It's a couple of levels under that, but it shows up as a Fujitsu MHY2160B, and below the drive lists my partitions. Your mileage may vary, and you'll probably be looking for XX SATA Controller or XX HDA X Controller. Usually the utility for configuring your hard drive available from the manufacturer is available as a bootable CD that you burn and boot to. You simply adjust the parameters from an screen there, following the directions they give. If hdparm doesn't get your machine to respond, this is what I would recommend. My Dell also has an adjustment screen built right into my computer's bios, but it doesn't seem to do much, as the only options are bypass, quiet, and performance. Let me know if using the hard drive manufacturer's utility to adjust hard drive parameters works. If not, we'll go from there. -- High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/59695 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 188231] Re: Evolution help file won't open when more than one instance of program running
It's perhaps not a common problem for a power user with a single monitor, but a beginner will often open several instances of a program without realizing it, and they're the ones usually bringing up help. I reported this because this happened with my mom. I kept showing her how useful help was, but half the time it wouldn't load up for her. It took a while to realize that multiple instances of the program being open was the problem. Additionally, if one has a dual monitor or large single monitor setup, one might want to read emails in one instance of the program, and input dates or to-dos on the other. If one one has a question for help while doing this, one's out of luck. It's not even so much that the limitation is a serious issue. Instead, the user will get frustrated with the program when it exhibits unexpected behaviour, and this is indeed unexpected. Especially if they were new to linux they might assume that there's something wrong with their setup or they made an error somewhere. I think we should aim at expected behaviour wherever possible, especially in core programs, and present a dialog box if this is something that can't be fixed without a significant amount of work. Still, I can't imagine the problem would be that difficult to solve fully. [Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime
I've been doing some research on this issue, and the Debian fix (hdparm of 254 I believe) would seem to have a lot going for it. Google, in a massive study on hard drives, says One of our key findings has been the lack of a consistent pattern of higher failure rates for higher temperature drives or for those drives at higher utilization levels. Such correlations have been repeatedly highlighted by previous studies, but we are unable to confirm them by observing our population. (http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.pdf) So higher temperatures and longer running time may not really be affecting our drives hardly at all. Also, if the drives are forced to write very frequently because ext3, there's a very small chance our drives won't be engaged in the event of a fall. I doubt a user would blame Ubuntu if they dropped their laptop and their hard drive was damaged. They WOULD blame Ubuntu if it failed years before it would have under Windows. So given that temperature and runtime don't seem to affect the drives significantly, and the drives are engaged nearly all the time, thus negating any benefit of parking, is there any reason not to run at 254 or 255 depending? -- High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/59695 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
