You can verify your package information by `dpkg -l` and `dpkg -s`.
But yes, the boot option will still be 6.38.0-38.

So I think you still reproduce the same issue even with this kernel?

Can you suggest what I should do? I think the correct way is to trigger

I'll revert 2 suspicious patches and provide a test kernel debian
package.

You will simply need to download all .deb files and go into the download
directory and do
dpkg -i *.deb

to install my test kernel. Will provide it later.

[Bug 2073552] Re: Add SoundWire devices to alsa-info reported in ACPI

2024-07-29 Thread Chris Chiu
** Description changed:

  [SRU Justifications]

  [Impact]
Modern Intel platforms (RPL, MTL, LNL...etc) connect audio codecs on
Soundwire instead of HDA, but the soundwire devices are not well reflected on
the alsa-info report. In order to meet the increasing demands for SoundWire
debugging, we must enable alsa-info to provide more information about SoundWire.

  [Fix]
- Backport the upstream commit cc0bcef81389 ("alsa-info.sh: log SoundWire
devices reported in ACPI"). The reported information can reflect which
soundwire devices are connected and which soundware link the device connects
to. It's quite sufficient for what driver should be ready and what
tplg/firmware file should be loaded.
+ Backport the upstream commit cc0bcef81389 ("alsa-info.sh: log SoundWire
devices reported in ACPI") of v1.2.12. The Oracular is expected to sync with
v1.2.12 and we may not have to backport to Oracular. The reported information
can reflect which soundwire devices are connected and which soundware link the
device connects to. It's quite sufficient for what driver should be ready and
what tplg/firmware file should be loaded.

  [Test Case]
- 1. Find a machine with (RTK/Cirrus/TI) Soundwire audio device.
+ 1. Find a machine with (RTK/Cirrus/TI) Soundwire audio device.
  2. Install the new alsa-utils debian package
  3. Execute `alsa-info` to generate the report
- 4. Check if the section "ACPI SoundWire Device Status Information" exists in
the output report.
+ 4. Check if the section "ACPI SoundWire Device Status Information" exists in
the output report.

  [Where problems could occur]
It's simply an additional soundwire information when ACPI exposed the
soundwire device. The risk for regression is low.
+
+ [Other Info]
+ Verify if the official Oracular starts from version v1.2.12 to determine if
we have to land it on Oracular.

could you try the latest kernel 6.10 to check if the problem still
there? The 6.10 kernel can be picked and installed by the following
commands. We'd like to know if the regression remains in new kernel.

Please refer to https://github.com/bkw777/mainline for kernel
installation.

As to the difference between .36 and .38 on AMD renoir. It's hard to
tell which commit could be the culprit. I may need to build some test
kernels and please help verify if it works for you. Could you help on

- To match the https://dep-team.pages.debian.net/~/dep3/ you mentioned, do you
suggest I can modify the `BugLink` field to `Bug-Ubuntu`, and replace the
`backported from commit` to `Origin` in my patch file?
- Thanks for pointing out the versioning problem. I've fixed the noble problem
per the comment.
- The upstream linux-firmware is no longer required since the file is now in
update of linux-firmware 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.1 which was not ready
yet when I file the SRU

  hardware").

  [Test Case]
- 1. Install linux-firmware with the FW files from upstream
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/commit/?id=57077702373e7ef40f0ca197724428d614bd92f8

[Bug 2073552] [NEW] Add SoundWire devices to alsa-info reported in ACPI

2024-07-19 Thread Chris Chiu
Public bug reported:

[SRU Justifications]

[Impact]
Modern Intel platforms (RPL, MTL, LNL...etc) connect audio codecs on Soundwire
instead of HDA, but the soundwire devices are not well reflected on the
alsa-info report. In order to meet the increasing demands for SoundWire
debugging, we must enable alsa-info to provide more information about SoundWire.

[Fix]
Backport the upstream commit cc0bcef81389 ("alsa-info.sh: log SoundWire devices
reported in ACPI"). The reported information can reflect which soundwire
devices are connected and which soundware link the device connects to. It's
quite sufficient for what driver should be ready and what tplg/firmware file
should be loaded.

[Test Case]
1. Find a machine with (RTK/Cirrus/TI) Soundwire audio device.
2. Install the new alsa-utils debian package
3. Execute `alsa-info` to generate the report
4. Check if the section "ACPI SoundWire Device Status Information" exists in
the output report.

[Where problems could occur]
It's simply an additional soundwire information when ACPI exposed the soundwire
device. The risk for regression is low.

[Bug 2039970] Re: Kernel 6.3 have a regression for Audio via HDMI

2024-07-01 Thread Chris Chiu
Hi @Maksim, ould you try the kernel 6.8 to check if the problem still
there? The 6.8 kernel can be picked and installed by the following
commands. We'd like to know if the regression remains in new kernel.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cappelikan/ppa
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
sudo apt install -y mainline

And I'll prepare test builds between 6.1 to 6.2-rc1 to narrow down the
range of the culprit commit.

[Bug 2070020] Re: Lenovo dock no longer working after upgrade from 6.5.0-35 to 6.5.0-41

2024-06-27 Thread Chris Chiu
Hi Robert, could you try the kernel 6.8 to check if the problem still
there? The 6.8 kernel can be picked and installed by the following
commands. We'd like to know if the regression remains in new kernel.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cappelikan/ppa

Or test the 6.5 kernel I built with the commit b47f813e0303 reverted.

Matthew, need some kernel builds to identify what commit really makes
difference. Maybe Mario can suggest which one is more likely the real

Please give me the output of the following command

Before screen locking (there's still HDMI audio)
1. dmesg -c > before.dmesg
2. pacmd list-sinks
3. pacmd list-sources
4. pacmd list-devices

When HDMI audio disappear
1. dmesg -c > after.dmesg
and all pacmd commands output.

Will need that for further debug. Thanks

[Bug 2063417] [NEW] Fix system hang while entering suspend with AMD Navi3x graphics

2024-04-25 Thread Chris Chiu
Public bug reported:

SRU Jusitification for Kernel

[Impact]
The system with AMD W7500/W7600/W7700 graphics will randomly hang when entering
suspend. The page fault would keep happening and the system can't handle other
tasks.
BUG: unable to handle page fault for address: 0a980148

[Fix]
Backport the fix from upstream
drm/amdgpu: skip to program GFXDEC registers for suspend abort ·
torvalds/linux@0326de4 · GitHub
drm/amdgpu: Reset dGPU if suspend got aborted · torvalds/linux@8b2be55 · GitHub
https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/590570/ [patchwork.freedesktop.org]

[Test Case]
1. Install AMD W7500/W7600/W7700 graphics
2. Install latest firmware with dcn_3_2_0_dmcub.bin for Navi31 and 32 and
dcn_3_2_1_dmcub.bin for Navi33.
3. Running fwts s3 stress test to check if system hangs

[Where problems could occur]
Improve the error handling when suspend and add the fallback mechanism in MES
engine. Only observed on particular AMD models. Need to test w/ more
combinations

=

SRU Jusitification for linux-firmware

[Impact]
The system will randomly hang due to page fault while suspending.

[Fix]
Add release FW binary from AMD to linux-firmware
dcn_3_2_0_dmcub.bin for Navi31 and 32:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/commit/amdgpu/dcn_3_2_0_dmcub.bin?id=eb06e8bbe56cea19b8c2a23c154e2dcefd79fa47
 [git.kernel.org]
dcn_3_2_1_dmcub.bin for Navi33:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/commit/amdgpu/dcn_3_2_1_dmcub.bin?id=8b8ac15f9bce35d555b8253156053a7e2b661f6a
 [git.kernel.org]

[Test Case]
1. Install AMD W7500/W7600/W7700 graphics
2. Test with latest linux kernel and linux-firmware
3. Running fwts s3 stress test to check if system hangs

[Where problems could occur]
The dcn_3_2_0_dmcub only for Navi31 and dcn_3_2_1_dmcub only for Navi33. The
impact are restricted to particular series.

@trurl42, does the sound used to work before (older kernel than 6.5)?
From the kernel log, the line out has no trivial problem. I need to know is
this a regression or something else. Thanks

[Bug 2062135] [NEW] Add Cirrus Logic CS35L56 amplifier support

2024-04-18 Thread Chris Chiu
Public bug reported:

SRU Jusitification for Kernel

[Impact]
Add a driver for the Cirrus Logic CS35L56 amplifier. This is not a standalone
HDA device; it provides control of the CS35L56 for systems that use a
combination of an HDA codec and CS35L56 amplifiers with audio routed through
the HDA codec. If it's not enabled on HDA codec with this amplifier, there will
be no sound if play audio via built-in speaker.

[Fix]
Backport the CS35L56 driver from kernel 6.9-rc

[Test Case]
1. Install the kernel w/ CS35L56 driver enabled
2. Install the linux-firmware with latest CS35l56 supported
3. Play audio file on machines w/ CS35L56 amplifier and make sure it's OK

[Where problems could occur]
Only affects models which have CS35L56 amplifier. Should be no risk to others.

=

SRU Jusitification for linux-firmware

[Impact]
No sound if no CS35L56 firmware even the driver is enabled in Linux kernel.

[Fix]
Add release FW binary of CS35L56 to linux-firmware

[Test Case]
1. Install the kernel w/ CS35L56 driver enabled
2. Install the linux-firmware with latest CS35l56 supported
3. Play audio file on machines w/ CS35L56 amplifier and make sure it's OK

[Where problems could occur]
New firmware is only loaded by the CS35L56, we only need to verify it on the
target platform.

[Bug 2061049] [NEW] Fix random HuC/GuC initialization failure of Intel i915 driver

2024-04-11 Thread Chris Chiu
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
i915 error can sometimes be found in kernel message when booting the machine w/
power unplugged
kernel: i915 :00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* GT1: GuC initialization failed -EIO
kernel: i915 :00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* GT1: Enabling uc failed (-5)
kernel: i915 :00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* GT1: Failed to initialize GPU,
declaring it wedged!
The GPU won't work with this failure

[Fix]
Backport the upatream fix for allowing slow HuC loading.

[Test]
1. Unplug the power of the laptop and make sure it's charged by battery
2. Cold boot or Warm boot the machine and check the GuC init fail message.
3. Go to settings - > about --> graphics to make sure the GPU information is
correct every boot.

[Where problems could occur]
Simply increase the loading time of HuC still get a working system. Should be
low risk of regression.

[Bug 2049569] Re: Enable the mic-mute led on Dell MTL laptops

2024-03-19 Thread Chris Chiu
Sorry for the mistake. The sof-hda-generic-2ch.tplg is replaced for non-
MTL platform which would cause regression.

new MR for jammy proposed to restore the sof-tplg/sof-hda-generic-2ch.tplg and
replace the same file in sof-ace-tplg for MTL
https://code.launchpad.net/~mschiu77/ubuntu/+source/firmware-sof/+git/firmware-sof/+merge/462688

to fix the kcontrol naming problem to align with the MTL SoF FW.

It's only required for new sof-audio-pci-intel-mtl driver. The impact should
be restricting. We may need more MTL machines to make sure the behavior is the

[Bug 2055866] [NEW] Simplify kcontrol naming on Intel MTL platforms

2024-03-04 Thread Chris Chiu
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
We found some laptops from Dell and HP with Intel MTL platform suffer the same
MIC-Mute led not working problem just like lp:2049569.

[Fix]
lp:2049569 adds switch/enum type of control on IPC4 to communicate correctly
with MTL SoF FW. However, It requires the additional patches from
https://lore.kernel.org/all/20230814232325.86397-1-pierre-louis.boss...@linux.intel.com/
to fix the kcontrol naming problem to align with the MTL SoF FW.

[Test Case]
1. Make sure the latest firmware-sof is installed.
2. press mic-mute hot-key and check if mic-mute is enabled or not by the OSD
icon.
3. The mic-mute led should be ON when mic-mute enabled, OFF when disabled.

[Where problems could occur]
It's only required for new sof-audio-pci-intel-mtl driver. The impact should be
restricting. We may need more MTL machines to make sure the behavior is the
aligned.

[Bug 1974842] Re: Audio card [8086:9d71] does not work at all (input, output) on 22.04

2022-05-25 Thread Chris Chiu
It needs the topology binary (skl_hda_dsp_generic-tplg.bin) which can be
generated by the Makefile shipped with alsa-topology-conf package.

@Timo has file a bug upstream in lp:1915117 #38 and #39 and said we
could build it in d/rules and ship it. @Timo can you check if anything
wrong. Thanks

[Bug 1967988] [NEW] Support different Cirrus audio codec configurations on Dell laptops

2022-04-05 Thread Chris Chiu
Public bug reported:

[SRU Justification]

[Impact]
On Dell's platform, Warlock/Bullseye Laptops have a mono DMIC, Cyborg and some
Warlock variants uses a stereo DMIC. They are not correctly mapped to the
corresponding configurations so the microphone function are not working as
expected.

[Fix]
Cirrus upstream new FIXUPs to support different microphone configurations on
different Dell laptop variants.

[Test Case]
1. Go to Audio Settings
2. Make sure the microphone is correctly detected and responds to audio input.
3. Issue command "arecord record_file" and check the record_file is consistent
with audio input.

[Where problems could occur]
Risk should be Low. The patches come from Cirrus and the configurations are
mapped based on the audio codec's SSIDs for different Dell variants.

[Bug 1965846] Re: Enable the mic-mute led on Dell XPS 9315

2022-03-21 Thread Chris Chiu
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
- On Dell's XPS 9315, the MIC-Mute function is working but the LED(on F4) state
is changed accordingly.
+ On Dell's XPS 9315, the MIC-Mute function is working but the LED(on F4) state
is not changed accordingly.

  [Fix]
Dell's mic mute support in privacy mode has been upstream, but the the
mic-mute led support is still SAUCE patch which is maintained with DMI based
quirk. Add a new SKU for XPS 9315 until Dell's official fix for the mic-mute
led.

  [Test Case]
  1. press mic-mute hot-key and check if mic-mute is enabled or not by the OSD
icon.
- 2. The mic-mute led should be on when mic-mute enabled, off when disabled.
+ 2. The mic-mute led should be ON when mic-mute enabled, OFF when disabled.

  [Where problems could occur]
It's only working on the particular SKU defined in DMI table. Will need to
drop it when Dell release the official solution.
