[Bug 1813820] Re: Waking from Suspend causes screen to appear with grey static (like a TV with no signal)

2019-05-11 Thread Craig Stein
today I started to follow the steps here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend

I found this in the dmesg after replicating the problem with pm_trace

[0.950964] Magic number: 0:66:1001
[0.950965] hash matches drivers/base/power/main.c:1012

Is there more going on here perhaps than a video driver? Not sure what
else to do with this information.

today tried another new kernel with the same result, still the screen
produces garbage after resuming from suspend. This was the kernel used:
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.0.2/

should i report this upstream to bugzilla? should mention i also
switched from Kubuntu 18.10 to Ubuntu 18.10..

[Bug 1813820] Re: Waking from Suspend causes screen to appear with grey static (like a TV with no signal)

2019-02-18 Thread Craig Stein
took the following steps:
Went to
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/
Downloaded the master branch which was uploaded 5 days ago by Josh Boyer
Backup my current firmware: sudo cp -r /lib/firmware /lib/firmware-$(uname -r)
tar -xvzf linux-firmware-master.tar.gz
CD into the resulting directory
sudo make install
mkdir -p /lib/firmware
sudo cp -r * /lib/firmware
sudo find /lib/firmware \( -name 'WHENCE' -or -name 'LICENSE.*' -or
-name 'LICENCE.*' \) -exec rm -- {} \;

Rebooted and tried to suspend. Still have the same result as above.
Let me know if I did any of this incorrectly.

** Description changed:

I am running Kubuntu 18.10. This is the PH517-61 Acer Predator Helios
500 with the Ryzen processor. My first issue I need to deal with is
Suspend. I have temporarily disabled suspend in the kcmshell5
configuration. If I do let the laptop suspend and then hit the keyboard
I get what appears to be a 1950s TV with no signal. At this point I
manually power down and then power up again and am able to view things
  on screen.

Running these commands I get this information:
  $ journalctl -b -g suspend
  Compiled without pattern matching support

  $ journalctl -b -p3

[Bug 1813820] [NEW] Waking from Suspend causes screen to appear with grey static (like a TV with no signal)

2019-01-29 Thread Craig Stein
Public bug reported:

I am running Kubuntu 18.10. This is the PH517-61 Acer Predator Helios
500 with the Ryzen processor. My first issue I need to deal with is
Suspend. I have temporarily disabled suspend in the kcmshell5
configuration. If I do let the laptop suspend and then hit the keyboard
I get what appears to be a 1950s TV with no signal. At this point I
manually power down and then power up again and am able to view things
on screen.

Running these commands I get this information:
$ journalctl -b -g suspend
Compiled without pattern matching support

$ journalctl -b -p3

[Bug 1731094] Re: Trouble Switching between GPUs on a Carrizo laptop with an integrated and discrete graphics card.

2019-01-22 Thread Craig Stein
At present this machine is running Manjaro and unfortunately I don't
have time to load Ubuntu on it. However I did try 18.04 recently and I
don't believe that it had the bug. I was able to specify to Steam to run
on the discrete graphics and it ran as expected using DRI_PRIME=1. I
didn't run this exact command however.

looking through the original documentation above could this be due to
the accountable2you program? I guess what i could do is turn off all my

[Bug 1731094] [NEW] Trouble Switching between GPUs on a Carrizo laptop with an integrated and discrete graphics card.

2017-11-08 Thread Craig Stein
Public bug reported:

Yesterday I decided to learn how to switch between my low power usage
GPU and my discrete GPU in my laptop using Prime. I started by running
this command: xrandr --listproviders.

I got the following result:

Providers: number : 2 Provider 0: id: 0x75 cap: 0x9, Source Output,
Sink Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 3 associated providers: 1 name:AMD Radeon
R6 Graphics @ pci::00:01.0 Provider 1: id: 0x3f cap: 0x4, Source
Offload crtcs: 0 outputs: 0 associated providers: 1 name:AMD Radeon (TM)
R7 M360 @ pci::03:00.0

I then ran this command to switch to my discrete GPU: xrandr
--setprovideroffloadsink 1 0.

This resulted in the following result to my GPU with this command:
DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer"

OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon (TM) R7 M360 (AMD ICELAND / DRM
3.18.0 / 4.13.8-041308-generic, LLVM 5.0.0)

Now however when i attempt to switch back to using my low powered Radeon
R6 with this command I get: xrandr --setprovideroffloadsink 0 1

X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range
for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR) Minor opcode
of failed request: 34 (RRSetProviderOffloadSink) Value in failed
request: 0x75 Serial number of failed request: 16 Current serial number
in output stream: 17

I should mention I am logging into the Gnome session using Xorg on
Ubuntu 17.10. I would love to be able to switch back to my R6 so any
help is much appreciated.

[Bug 1722207] Re: Very slow (3-4 minutes) to shutdown (17.10 without encryption)

2017-10-17 Thread Craig Stein
Systemd journal from reboot this morning.
There are some lines mentioning the following that i remember seeing from when
i had tried Debian Testing also with the 4.13 kernel (with a similar problem)
that showed up in the terminal:

"echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this
message.

These were related to some stop jobs that took a long time to run also
in debian before shutting down.

[Bug 1722207] Re: Very slow (3-4 minutes) to shutdown (17.10 without encryption)

2017-10-17 Thread Craig Stein
I have this same bug on my Carrizo AMD A10-8700P. When I cycle through
the terminals on shutdown there is no further information to describe
what is going on. I am running 17.10 based on the October 15, 2017
daily iso. I have also set my journal as persistent and can't see
anything in there that would indicate wat is slowing it down.

Later tonight I will post my systemd-analyze critical-chain and systemd-
analyze blame files and perhaps that will help?

I would say it takes at least 6 minutes to shutdown or reboot (just up
the the shutdown point).

Also I have no encryption enabled at present.

I can now confirm that the patch provided in the
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101029 fixes my problem, i
was finally able to patch and compile the source code for the kernel and
was able to boot into the system without crashing. What is the process
now to get this patch applied in Ubuntu? How long will it be until it is
applied? Also how can i stay in the loop as i will wait to upgrade my
main drive until this is in the ubuntu kernel?

[Bug 1683184] Re: GPU problems on HP 15-ba009ng

2017-05-13 Thread Craig Stein
Ok I tried two kernel packages both with and without nomodeset enabled
in the grub file, first tried the v4.11 image and specifically file
named linux-
image-4.11.0-041100-generic_4.11.0-041100.201705041534_amd64.deb. This
gave me errors similar to the above including multiple "AMD-Vi:
Completion-Wait loop timed out" and a bunch of disk checks that kept
failing. I then uninstalled the above package and tried a kernel image
from drm-next and specifically package "linux-
image-4.11.0-996-generic_4.11.0-996.201705122201_amd64.deb". Without
nomodeset enabled in the grub config it provided the same errors as
above. For both packages I simply used the command sudo dpkg -i
packagename.deb. And to uninstall the first kernel I used sudo apt-get
purge linux-image.

[Bug 1683184] Re: GPU problems on HP 15-ba009ng

2017-05-12 Thread Craig Stein
I can confirm that I have this exact same issue with and AMD APU
A10-8700P in an Acer E5-552G-T324 with the two graphics cards (the
second being a Topaz XT [Radeon R7 M260/M265 / M340/M360 / M440/M445]).

When i take out nomodeset in the grub config and run sudo update-grub
and then reboot my screen gets spammed multiple times with "AMD-Vi:
Completion-Wait loop timed out". As Paul Sonnenschein reported
nomodeset kills my 3D rendering and I would very much like to be able to
have that. Also this machine mostly works good under Ubuntu Mate
16.04.2 except my screen flickers when switching to the screensaver and
on boot up.

Please let me know if I should upload further information in relation to
this as I am new at reporting bugs.
