[Bug 1492764] Re: [drm:intel_pipe_config_compare [i915]] *ERROR* mismatch in ips_enabled (expected 1, found 0)

2016-01-20 Thread DG
I started getting the error today with the latest patch. I've sent in a
bug (via "ubuntu-bug linux") but wanted to add that I was able to get
rid of it* by running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm" in recovery mode.
I was already using lightdm so I don't know why that fixed the problem.

(* - It's possible it was just a coincidence but I tried multiple times
to reboot and failed every time with the drm error until I reconfigured
lightdm and it started the first time. It's the only change I tried.)

[Bug 1323930] Re: mod_lua.so missing from 14.04 install (apache2-bin, 2.4.7-1ubuntu4))

2014-08-25 Thread DG
Charles,

I fixed this by getting the updated version of Apache can be downloaded
from the following url:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apache2

You need the following packages:

apache2-bin_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb
apache2-data_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_all.deb
apache2-utils_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb
apache2_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb
apache2-mpm-worker_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb

(or apache2-mpm-prefork_2.4.9-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb)

and install in that order with sudo dpkg -i, first install liblua5.1

It's not in 14.04.1 - so I also would like to know if this fix perhaps
will be in 14.04.2.

Best,

Dirk

[Bug 676525] Re: mount.cifs cannot mount with kerberos

2014-07-11 Thread DG Turner
Kerberos' purpose is authentication. More verbosely, using kerberos as
the primary authentication method should ensure that the presented
credentials do in fact belong to the user presenting them (whether that
is a real user or a service is irrelevant).

To force the impersonation of credentials to perform a mount of a
Windows share within the user's home directory is a subversion of the
kerberos mechanism, and potentially allows a breach to propagate.

The concerns raised by this behaviour may raise fewer alarm bells for
those more accustomed to a *nix environment. When the environment is
Windows/Active Directory based, the aforementioned concerns become much
more disconcerting. The potential damage caused by the impersonation of
a user by root could be catastrophic is the right user were
impersonated, which is why several of my systems are configured to send
an alert when a chown of any ticket is attempted.

To make matters more interesting (at least for me), the cruid option
still fails for me when attempting a mount using kerberos credentials.

[Bug 676525] Re: mount.cifs cannot mount with kerberos

2014-07-10 Thread DG Turner
Regarding the comment from mcguire on 2014-03-12
Not a bug a bad mount.cifs usage.

Changed in cifs-utils (Ubuntu):
status:Confirmed → Invalid

What is wrong with you? This is a critical bug, not invalid usage. By
forcing users to impersonate themselve from the SUDO command, you
subvert the entire purpose of the kerberos system -- authentication.

Marking this as invalid was either an error, or a misunderstanding of

[Bug 1184160] [NEW] multitouch - not all 3 finger actions working

2013-05-25 Thread dg
Public bug reported:

As reported on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Multitouch, the following 3
gestures are not working (and they are the ones I find most useful):

3 finger pinch to maximize/restore windows
3 finger press and drag to move window

[Bug 1184160] Re: multitouch - not all 3 finger actions working

2013-05-25 Thread dg
I have no idea if this is related, but I also do not see settings such as
Horizontal Scroll in the MouseTouchpad settings window,
and the option Disable Touchpad While Typing, though displayed and selected,
does not work at all.
This makes typing and development very difficult - as my palm brushes the
touchpad, and the mouse cursor jumps unpredictably, causing me big problems
when editing text.

Please let me know if I need to log a separate bug report for this.
Screenshot attached.

[Bug 1166242] Re: 3-fingers does not activate window move/resize

2013-04-27 Thread dg
@ Andrea.
Whether the grab icons appear or not is the issue with this bug, I believe.

The problem is that the 3-finger drag does not work at all, with or
without the icons appearing. This is annoying as it was working fine
before and was a good productivity aid. Now gone, since I upgraded to a
recent 13.04 beta.

I have exactly the same behaviour as reported by Curtis.

[Bug 1074779] Re: llvmpipe used after clean install instead of intel

2012-11-27 Thread DG
Hi I am having the same issue in Mint 14 but when I create the
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file as suggested above, the memory issue is resolved
but it looks like Mint is selecting a different desktop environment (the
Legacy Gnome3 I think, but I am new to Mint so am not sure?).

When I log out and Select Cinammon 2D the correct desktop appears but
the CPU issue has returned. Any other desktop I select at the Logon
Screen results in the same appearance but uses the correct INTEL
Drivers. (The menu structure looks completely different and has a
small icon saying 'LM' at the bottom left rather than 'MENU')

Is there any other suggested fix or should Cinnamon work ok if I remove
LM14 and Install LM13 ?

[Bug 1074779] Re: llvmpipe used after clean install instead of intel

2012-11-27 Thread DG
I have now updated to MDM 1.0.8 but the issue is still there. Now when I
logon each time the normal Cinnamon desktop still doesn't appear. I
think I may be seeing the compatibility mode desktop because .

I then tried installing LM13 and when I booted from the DVD there was
just a Blue Screen. The menu would appear but when I selected a menu
item a blue window appeared with a thick fuzzy white border. I was
unable to see any contents within the windows so couldn't even start the
Installation of LM. I tried rebooting from the DVD but this time
selected 'Compatibility' Mode. When it booted the desktop loaded but it
was the same desktop I am seeing when I boot into LM14 !!

This would look to me like an issue with the Display Driver. IS there
anything further I could try to resolve this? I would really love to
be able to use LM rather than going back to Windows or another Linux
Distro. I did use Ubuntu about a year ago on the same PC without any
issues.

Re: [Bug 292450] Re: Broadcom STA/wl driver causes random kernel panics

2012-07-19 Thread dg
Emilio, it is probably better to look in Ubuntu Forums than add comments to
this bug.

Also, you need to give more detail than just it doesn't work.

How do you know it doesn't work? What is the specific action you are trying
now that fails?
The more specific you can be, the better the help will be.

Impact: The current broadcom driver (wl.ko) seems to have several
issues during operation. Reported have been random crashes between 5 a
day to only 1 every 4 days.

Fix: The latest driver from broadcom had positive feedback on Jaunty and
has been released there. This is the backport of that driver for intrepid.
The same code is intended to get ported to Hardy LRM. This would sync up
the Hardy codebase with the Intrepid and Jaunty layout. So this would yield
 bug fixes and ease maintenance.

Changes are local to wl.ko only.

Testcase: Generic usage will sometimes cause panics.

   ---

The new wl driver(Broadcom STA) randomly causes my Dell Inspiron E1505
to experience kernel panics. I haven't been able to get a picture of
the kernel panic though. The kernel panic happens randomly, sometimes
   even during bootup.

The reason why I know its from the wl driver is because, I was using
the b43 driver back on hardy. When the new broadcom driver was
released, I manually compiled it and installed it. The driver kept
randomly causing kernel panics on my system. When I blacklisted the
driver and reverted back to b43, no more kernel panics. I wiped my
disk down and installed intrepid and set my system to use the new wl
driver again. The kernel panics started all over again. When I changed
to the b43 driver, the kernel panics disappeared.

The system can sometimes run for 4/5 days before experiencing a kernel
panic and at other times, I can get about 5 kernel panics in a day. I
googled around and found a few people on both the ubuntu and debian
forums having the same problem with different systems and different
   broadcom cards but same driver.

I find most interesting is that app-armor is re-installed. Are updates

[Bug 886970] Re: Window disapears when minimized

2011-11-14 Thread DG
I have not been able to reproduce it. It has happened with gedit and libre
office writer if that helps.
I expected it to be accessible from the taskbar and have min/max/close buttons.
If I clicked the icon it simply brought up a new instance (except for gedit: it
opened a new tab) that behaved normal.
The program was not listed on alt-tab nor was it accessible by switching
workspaces.

[Bug 819398] Re: Skype has no indicator and no way of accessing the window

2011-09-15 Thread dg
I confirm this is an issue in up-to-date Oneiric beta1 as of today.
Skype starts and runs fine. No notification icon appears though.

If the application is closed by hitting the top-left close X button on
the main Skype window, the app also fails to register its running status
in the Unity launcher. If Skype is run again from the launcher, a second
instance is created.

Maybe this is a bug upstream at Skype? If I could confirmation of this I
will log that myself.

Running this version:
ii skype:i3862.2.0.35-0natty1

[Bug 567696] Re: [Radeon] [Lucid] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop

2011-06-07 Thread dg
Just to be clear, this bug has nothing to do with hardware drivers
(nvidia-current, nouveau, fglrx, etc), or even the Ubuntu distribution
itself. This bug has been around for years across different X and kernel
versions in different distributions (e.g. Redhat etc).

The only effective workaround I know is to disable desktop effects in
KWin or Compiz. and regress to using a straight 2D desktop (no
transparency, 3D effects etc).

This is a major loss of functionality, especially to use on high-end
hardware like my Lenovo W510, so I can't understand why it is apparently
getting so little love from upstream Xorg / kernel devs. Sigh.

[Bug 567696] Re: [Radeon] [Lucid] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop

2011-06-07 Thread dg
Since this bug occurs across multiple distributions AND across multiple
graphics hardware AND across multiple drivers, it is clearly a generic
Xorg/kernel issue, so I have logged a bug with upstream (Xorg -
freedesktop) team - URL is here:

 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38029

Unfortunately, as it keeps on coming up (Google shows this bug has been
around for over 2 years), I don't hold out any great hope that it will
be fixed at any time, by anybody, despite it effectively preventing use
of a MAJOR feature (ie standard 3D Desktop Effects).

[Bug 567696] Re: [Radeon] [Lucid] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop

2011-05-26 Thread dg
Getting the same on my Lenovo W510.

Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit - uptodate
KDE 4.6.2
Gnome 2.32.0
nvidia-current 270.41.06-0ubuntu1
nouveau 0.0.16+git20110107+b795ca6e-0ubuntu7

I get a hard freeze with mouse cursor still working, and the box
normally still SSH-able, if I use:

KDE + Kwin
Gnome + Compiz
and using either nvidia-current (proprietary) or nouveau graphics driver.

Workaround is to use Gnome+Metacity.

[Bug 676413] Re: Video playback performance drops substantially after suspend/wake cycle (Lenovo X201 i5 w/ Intel GMA HD)

2010-12-07 Thread dg
By now it is obvious that this bug has nothing to do with the Intel
driver - as I and others are using Nvidia (with the proprietary driver)
and we have the same problem.

My problem in particular is the choppy full-screen flash playback after
resume - scrolling in Chrome seems fine though.

Maybe we should reassign this bug? It's not correct, being pinned to
xserver-xorg-video-intel

(see discussion at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10210377)

[Bug 449801] Re: Networkmanager does not allow nm-applet to start for a network authenticated user.

2009-10-14 Thread DG Turner
Likewise open and Likewise Enterprise utilize the same authentication
mechanism and group membership determination. The differences are
primarily on the Windows side (specifically schema changes to Active
Directory), though Likewise Enterprise does use additional daemons for
the enforcement of GPO updates and data collection.

Dropping down into unprovisioned mode (which is what Likewise Open
functions at) would provide no additional information, and prevent me
from logging into the affected boxes as myself (since the UID reported
would no longer match the UID owning my home directory).

There is no doubt that using the Open version would cause the same
results. I think the deeper question is what mechanism is being used to
determine group membership prior to verifying access with
DBUS/PolicyKit, and why it is not querying /etc/group or /etc/gshadow?

I am beginning to suspect that the bug is actually in changes made to
PolicyKit rather than Network Manager or dbus. Either way, this is a
serious bug with dramatic consequences -- the inability to integrate
with a non-local authentication method places an Operating System
squarely into the consumer category rather than the Enterprise category.
The security ramifications are also dramatic: to allow my users to
access the wirless network, I had to change the default permissions to
allow ownership.

[Bug 449801] Re: Networkmanager does not allow nm-applet to start for a networkauthenticated user.

2009-10-13 Thread DG Turner
Apparently you either did not read the changes made to the configuration files,
or did not fully understand their import. I will reiterate: the changes made to
allow this package to work as intended, it was necessary to change the default
configuration from deny ownership of the NetworkManager Service and Settings,
I believe this will allow an individual to configure networking in an arbitrary
manner, which most certainly can allow for direct loss of privacy.
If you disagree, please explain to me how full access to network settings
cannot allow this.

i insist that this bug be reclassified as a security bug today.

[Bug 363272] Re: amd64 + vmware 1.0.9 vmware-authd broken

2009-07-13 Thread dg
Well, guys, I met this problem today, and finally I resolved this.
if you take a look on /etc/shadow, you will see the shadow password is too long
than the normal case,

= shadow ===
test1:$1$yzJSeIFS$FmhQgNYYD/BhapUkes0ME1:14438:0:9:7:::
test2:$6$CJOO9de/$ddz3ZkubIO8mGacvRkhMUX3cz0n2u0I4dLZMxila8iBsXN8q2QKYnx0X1dY0CGDsTDw9xgDcWbf0ilfd/1WX01:14438:0:9:7:::

this case, test1 is using md5, and test2 using sha512, vmware doesn't support
sha512.

Turn back, try to look /etc/pam.d/common-password:
there should be a line:
password [success=1 default=ignore] pam_unix.so obscure sha512

that caused the problem, the pam_unix.so in vmware directory can only
support md5 value, don't support sha512.

what you need to do is change it back to:
password requisite pam_unix.so nullok obscure md5

then using passwd to change user password, it should be ok now.

I don't know which package update common-password file, maybe caused by
pam-auth-update in libpam-runtime

what a stupid design.

[Bug 292450] Re: Broadcom STA/wl driver causes random kernel panics

2009-03-27 Thread dg
While we're waiting either for the bug-fix to appear in Intrepid (or
until we all upgrade to Jaunty) this is an updated quick hacky mini-
HOWTO that will result in a persistent updated fixed wl driver
installation (my previous mini-HOWTO only was good until next reboot):

N.B. for amd64 (change the wget and tar accordingly for i386)

cd; mkdir wl_src
SRC=$HOME/wl_src
cd $SRC
wget
http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/hybrid-portsrc-x86_64-v5_10_79_10.tar.gz
tar zxvf hybrid-portsrc-x86_64-v5_10_79_10.tar.gz
wget http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/wl_iw.patch
cd src/wl/sys
patch ../../../wl_iw.patch
cd $SRC
VER=`uname -r`
make -C /lib/modules/$VER/build M=`pwd`
cd /lib/linux-restricted-modules/$VER/wl
tar cvf ~/wlObj_bak.tar * # backup existing mod objects in case something
goes wrong
for i in *; do sudo cp `find $SRC -name $i` . ; done
sudo cp $SRC/lib/wlc_hybrid.o_shipped wlc_hybrid.o_shipped_x86_64

[Bug 292450] Re: Broadcom STA/wl driver causes random kernel panics

2009-03-23 Thread dg
I confirm that many caps-lock-flashing freezes still occur with driver
version 5.10.27.12 which is present in linux-restricted-
modules-2.6.27-11-generic v2.6.27-11.16 and using AES/CCMP encryption on
the wireless LAN.

Following Urschl's update above, I went to
http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php to get the latest
driver version 5.10.79.10 and also the Patch for WPA-Enterprise hang.
My concern with the patch is that it only addresses WPA Enterprise
issues but I am using WPA2 Personal right now . Maybe it will
still help?

Anyway, I've installed the patched driver v.5.10.79.10 and no lockups so
far (in the last 5 minutes :)

I've included a short generic HOWTO for those interested in doing the
same. It covers creating local source directory, getting the latest
driver and patch (for 64-bit Linux), patching the code, building and
installing the driver, and manually refreshing the currently loaded
driver. Hope it helps someone.

Latest Broadcom wl HOWTO:

cd; mkdir wl_src
SRC=$HOME/wl_src
cd $SRC
wget
http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/hybrid-portsrc-x86_64-v5_10_79_10.tar.gz
tar zxvf hybrid-portsrc-x86_64-v5_10_79_10.tar.gz
wget http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/wl_iw.patch
cd src/wl/sys
patch ../../../wl_iw.patch
cd $SRC
VER=`uname -r`
make -C /lib/modules/$VER/build M=`pwd`
WLPATH=`find /lib/modules/$VER -name wl.ko`
sudo mv wl.ko $WLPATH
sudo modprobe -r wl
sudo modprobe wl

2009-03-23 Thread dg
@Peter:

Here's a quick hack way to make sure which version of wl you are
running right now:

# strings `modinfo wl | grep filename | awk {'print $2'}` | grep
Broadcom

For me, this returns:
%s: Broadcom BCM%04x 802.11 Wireless Controller 5.10.79.10

[Bug 292450] Re: Broadcom STA/wl driver causes random kernel panics

2008-12-25 Thread dg
Also still happening here.
Had the same caps-lock flashing system freeze-up while using wireless, albeit
after some days using it without problem.

I don't get any dialogs popping up, nor do I have any debug lines in the
system logs either. I also don't need to do any fsck after rebooting
(luckily).

But it would be nice to have a stable 802.11 driver.

Hmmm ... it's been nearly 24 hours and I still don't see the new .deb!
In fact if I enable -proposed and try to upgrade, I get this:

The following packages have been kept back:
   linux-restricted-modules-generic (2.6.27.9.13 = 2.6.27.11.14)

which is due to the package linux-restricted-
modules-2.6.27-11-generic not being available

Am I just being impatient or should I be able to see linux-restricted-

Having enabled -proposed, latest version I can see is

(although I have linux-image_2.6.27-11.21 already ...)

[Bug 304926] [NEW] System freezes (caps lock flashes), broadcom suspected

2008-12-03 Thread dg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.27-9-generic

PROBLEM: System freezes randomly, caps lock flashes. Power cycle required.
NO errors or warnings are given in /var/log/messages or kern.log or syslog -
nothing!

System: HP tx2500z tablet notebook, using Intrepid 8.10 with all packages up to
date as of Dec 3 2008, and up-to-date BIOS
repos enabled: intrepid/-updates/-security main restricted universe multiverse

Kernel: 2.6.27-9-generic
(exact same behaviour occurs with 2.6.27-7-generic)

Suspected problem package:
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.27-9-generic version 2.6.27-9.13

After extensive testing, this problem has ** only been seen to occur
when wireless switch is enabled **.

For this reason, the proprietary broadcom driver (wl) is suspected to be
causing the freeze problem.
In other respects, the driver works flawlessly.

I believe that it also only happens when signal strength is low ( 40%)
but I cannot be certain.

** Affects: linux-restricted-modules (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
