[Bug 1935785] [NEW] Failed resume: radeon

2021-07-11 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Public bug reported:

My laptop used to be able to suspend and resume fine, on 20.04 and
earlier.

I recently upgraded to 20.10, and noticed that it was failing to resume,
but I didn't look into it much because I also noticed that I could
upgrade to 21.04. Same issue.

I ran journalctl -b -l -kand noticed an error with radeon failing to
resume. But, I'm not sure if that is the correct command. I was
suggested to run journalctl -b -1, and that doesn't show any errors at
the end.

[Bug 1929786] Re: Postfix Local only configuration adds 2 dots on hostname , blocking package upgrades

2021-07-11 Thread Daniel Hollocher
I'm attaching my old config, ie, the one I deleted. Also, I switched
the bug from Triaged to Confirmed because I'm not sure how this bug is
Triaged. It might not even be a postfix issue.

That's all I got!

[Bug 1929786] Re: Postfix Local only configuration adds 2 dots on hostname , blocking package upgrades

2021-07-11 Thread Daniel Hollocher
I had this issue as well. Seems to be some sort of config issue. I
replaced with /etc/postfix/main.cf with a blank file, and it worked.

I did not configure it myself, but I did get a question about postfix
during my upgrade, where I selected the default selection. The upgrade
was from 20.10->21.04, so I think this might be an upgrade issue.

Today, I ran a software update, and this bug seems to have resolved
itself. So I'm going to mark invalid.

FWIW, I run updates manually, so the timing of when this change happened
can't be pinned to today.

2021-05-10 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Tj, from irc #ubuntu, says "I can see the problem. it's the onegrub
builds for i386 going back to 16.04 ... the updater is picking the FIRST
in the list which is for Version: 1.167+2.04-1ubuntu44"

I think this is in reference to a change in grub2: grub2-unsigned
(2.04-1ubuntu44) hirsute; urgency=medium

  * Compile grub-efi-amd64 installable i386 platform on hirsute, to make
it available in bionic and earlier as part of onegrub builds.

[Bug 1899309] [NEW] firefox leaks memory and crashes computer (lack of swap)

2020-10-10 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Public bug reported:

I use lot's of tabs in firefox, and I also stream videos. Firefox uses
lot's of memory in the first place, and it also seems to leak memory as
well. The default install gave me very little swap. When my system
runs out of memory, it swaps almost endlessly. This last time, it was
more than 20 minutes of swapping, so I got frustrated, reboot, and now
I'm filing a bug.

I see this as affecting several aspects of my system:
1) the installer only gave me a 1g swap file to pair with my 12g of memory, and
it gave me no option to set it myself. At some point, that changed to 2g and I
don't know how. I installed on 18.04, fresh install over an old /home
directory. A little background: I normally manually set my partitions (msdos),
and give myself a swap partition that is at least the same size as my ram, and
maybe up to double it. I upgraded to a new ssd drive, and tried to go with the
new partitioning system, gpt. I realized I didn't know how to setup gpt, so I
went with a default install, and copied over my /home from a backup. Anyway,
not super important.
2)Firefox uses up tons of memory, and leaks it. Firefox also keeps asking for
memory from my system, even though there is none left
3) My system keeps trying to give firefox more memory, even though there is
none left. And it swap kills my system. Shouldn't the system just give
firefox an oom error?
4) When I have let this whole swap death thing just go on, it eventually stops
by killing some part of firefox and getting some more memory back. Usually it
kills the extensions part of firefox. But why does it take so long?
5) There is no warning that my system is running out of memory.

I feel like each of the above is a different bug, at a certain level,
and they are all coming together and crashing my system. I filed this
bug against firefox because, on irc, it was suggested as a place to
start.

[Bug 1673649] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in OsAbort()

2018-04-09 Thread Daniel Hollocher
I've been getting this when waking from sleep. I have a weird
experience before with sleep on this computer, where I was running linux
mint 18.something, and I noticed that it wasn't going to sleep all the
time. It was a weird thing where opening the laptop when a sleep was
already initiated would pause the sleep from happening even if the
laptop was closed again. I was playing with this, opening and closing
the laptop when I noticed some errors. It wasn't recovering, and things
were getting weird, so I decided to reboot... I never did boot off that
ssd again. Luckily, I was able to read ALL the data off the drive, just
couldn't write to it, or boot off it.

So I'm not going to test this. Maybe there is some weird hw bug.
Hopefully me sharing this story provides some kind of useful data point.

I admit I mainly read the section that you linked. What is "that" that
the article covers?

I do see a section on bisecting Ubuntu git trees. That might be what
I'm looking for, but I'm still confused as to how I would figure out my
good and bad starting points.

[Bug 1395219] Re: systemd-udevd segfault

2014-11-22 Thread Daniel Hollocher
I wasn't able to bisect this with the mainline builds because I'm having
trouble finding a build where this issue happens. I tried 5 before
giving up. Can you please point me to the mainline build which the
ubuntu kernel is built upon?

(it is my understanding that I can't proceed with a git bisect without
finding the issue in a mainline build)

[Bug 1385497] [NEW] Kernel not upgraded

2014-10-24 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded from 14.04 to 14.10, and I noticed the kernel hasn't
been upgraded. Then I noticed that the package linux-generic was
missing. I've been hacking my way through the logs and noticed this
entry in /var/log/apt/history.log.2.gz:

Start-Date: 2014-08-14 21:19:26
Commandline: aptdaemon role='role-commit-packages' sender=':1.91'
Install: dkms:i386 (2.2.0.3-1.1ubuntu5, automatic), fakeroot:i386
(1.20-3ubuntu2, automatic), nvidia-opencl-icd-304:i386 (304.117-0ubuntu1,
automatic), nvidia-settings:i386 (331.20-0ubuntu8, automatic),
nvidia-libopencl1-304:
i386 (304.117-0ubuntu1, automatic), screen-resolution-extra:i386 (0.17.1,
automatic), libcuda1-304:i386 (304.117-0ubuntu1, automatic), libfakeroot:i386
(1.20-3ubuntu2, automatic), libvdpau1:i386 (0.7-1, automatic), nvidia-304
:i386 (304.117-0ubuntu1)
Remove: linux-generic:i386 (3.13.0.33.39)
End-Date: 2014-08-14 21:21:19

I'm pretty sure the history of this install is that I "upgraded" to 14.04 via a
clean install, and then at some point installed the nvidia legacy drivers
through the standard repository gui. I'm guessing that's when linux-generic
was removed, and that's why the upgrader didn't update my kernel.

[Bug 1367827] Re: 14.04 BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ...

2014-09-10 Thread Daniel Hollocher
well, it is hard to say whether it is fixed or not. For now, it seems
to have lasted longer than ever. Ie, it seems to be lasting long enough
that I could acutally use it.

I will mark it fixed upstream, and just change it back if I run into the
error again.

2014-09-10 Thread Daniel Hollocher
I forgot to mention, that while my system doesn't freeze, things start
to stop working. It is hard to describe, programs will just not work or
crash. Currently, chrome froze, so I'm using firefox to post all this.

I will really appreciate any help that can be provided. I'm also
curious what the kernel oops means. What exaclty is going wrong?

[Bug 1367827] [NEW] 14.04 kernel oops

2014-09-10 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Public bug reported:

hey guys. So I have been getting this kernel oops on an old laptop on
14.04. It is a laptop new to my posession, so I don't have a lot of
experience with it. I believe it was running mainly windows xp before,
and had an old but unused Ubuntu install on it as well. I first
encountered it when trying to wipe the machine and install 14.04 xubuntu
from scratch.

I assumed that maybe it is because the laptop is old, maybe the memory
was bad, I dunno. I replaced the memory, same error.

I installed the server edition of ubuntu, and the install actually
worked. This current bug is being filed from that install, where I
installed xubuntu-desktop^ from the command line. I installed google-
chrome, and then tried to open chrome, then the oops again.

I have also installed 10.04 and 12.04, and both installs went fine.
Since the 14.04 kernel oops happened early in the install process, I'm
inclined to believe that those earlier versions are working, and that
this is a regression from 12.04->14.04.

I will attach a copy of dmesg which shows the oops, in case it isn't
already included.

[Bug 1360705] Re: 64.4.17.176 (fails to resolve ftp.microsoft.com)

2014-08-27 Thread Daniel Hollocher
yeah, it looks like the upstream author is changing over to non-
microsoft ftps, even though the regular ftp.microsoft.com seems to be
working (ie, works for me). They must have had a lot of trouble with
ftp.microsoft.com in the past.

I expect this fix will be incorporated in the next Ubuntu release. Till
then, I hope people who find this bug report can apply a fix themselves
in the meantime.

[Bug 1360705] [NEW] 64.4.17.176 (fails to resolve ftp.microsoft.com)

2014-08-23 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Public bug reported:

While using winetricks to install various fonts, it would freeze while
trying to connect to 64.4.17.176. Doesn't seem to be much there in my
webbrowser.

My assessment is that winetricks seems to resolve ftp.microsoft.com by
hard coding it to 64.4.17.176 [1].

Un-hardcoding it worked for me, ie:
Edit /usr/bin/winetricks and change the line that says
"ftp_microsoft_com=64.4.17.176" to "ftp_microsoft_com=ftp.microsoft.com"

I ran bootrepair again, and it seemed to finish. Here is the output:
Boot successfully repaired.

Please write on a paper the following URL:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/6495418/

In case you still experience boot problem, indicate this URL to:
boot.rep...@gmail.com or to your favorite support forum.

You can now reboot your computer.
Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sda2/EFI/ubuntu/shimx64.efi file!

The boot files of [The OS now in use - Ubuntu 13.10] are far from the
start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry
after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This
can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition
via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair].

[Bug 1208204] Re: indicator-sound no longer functions with xfce4-indicator-plugin

2013-09-16 Thread Daniel Hollocher
I do think the issue is that the xfce4 panel is in gtk2, and the gtk2
sound indicator was written specifically to support xfce. see:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1048217

Given what's in 1048217, I think comment #27 needs to be adjusted to
work for lubuntu as well, and then it can be a proper fix. And it
should also probably check against pidof xfce4-panel, since that is the
relevant program, right?

[Bug 862785] Re: Default sampling_down_factor setting for ondemand governor cripples Intel turbo boost

2013-09-13 Thread Daniel Hollocher
I can comment on this. First off, sampling_down_factor = 1 disables the
feature, so it is a bit the opposite of what you describe. I believe
what's happening is that ondemand can fail for certain cpu's (including
mine), and instead of amping up the frequency under heavy load, it will
resonate the frequency, switching it up and down.

sampling_down_factor delays, geometrically, how fast ondemand will down
scale the frequency, and can thus reduce this issue.

>From the patch author: "Set to 1 it makes no changes from existing behavior,
>but set to greater than 1 (e.g. 100) it acts as a multiplier for the
>scheduling interval for reevaluating load when the CPU is at its top speed due
>to high load. This improves
performance by reducing the overhead of load evaluation and helping the CPU
stay at its top speed when truly busy, rather than shifting back and forth in
speed. This tunable has no effect on behavior at lower speeds/lower CPU loads."

It's been awhile since I've looked at this, but running a few javascript
tests, it looks like I still have this issue. I guess I need to work
this tunable myself!

[Bug 1208204] Re: indicator-sound no longer functions with xfce4-indicator-plugin

2013-08-26 Thread Daniel Hollocher
I think technically, this bug is of high importance:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance
You can't adjust sound, which is core functionality.

The workaround is easy only if you happen to be looking at this bug
report. I suspect that by easy, the guide means that an uneducated user
could find a workaround, just by playing around.

Please don't change the importance as the release nears. Please just
set it correctly. Low means ignore potentially forever. High means,
fix at least before release. Changing it will just confuse or surprise
the dev.

I ran into this issue as well but through a specific route: I just
tried to select the image while it was trying to erase the disk. That
somehow canceled the erasing, according to startup-disk-creator, but
left it in the inconsistent state described here.

[Bug 1068341] Re: No way to specify correct dependencies for dkms packages (nvidia driver install fails to get matching header)

comment 7-8 is incorrect. You can test this by removing ALL packages
that satisfy the linux-headers virtual dependency, and watch and nvidia-
current* doesn't get removed. Then try re-installing nvidia-current,
watch as no headers get installed.

install failed by checking `dkms status`
- headers package was missing, and that was the issue according to `dkms
autoinstall`
- 'linux-headers' is a virtual package and an unenforced dependency for dkms

I feel like each of those things could be regarded as a bug. I leave
that to someone else. Ultimately, the driver failed to install. FWIW,
I already fixed the issue by installing linux-headers-generic, and
running `dkms autoinstall`, and that was the state when I file this
report. If it helps, I am happy to reinstall and re-test, or just
remove the drivers/headers and retest.

[Bug 1072819] [NEW] disconnected drive stalls boot: prompt can be hidden

2012-10-29 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Public bug reported:

the boot pauses if I have a drive disconnected. There is a prompt
asking to skip mounting the drive, but that prompt disappears if you
exit the splash screen and go back. So, either the boot shouldn't
pause, or the prompt should remain shown. The drive is just extra
storage, and not essential for boot, ie, /home / /boot are all available
on the primary drive

There are two fstab entries for the disconnected drive

The prompt disappears if I switch away the little splash screen, either
with ctrl+alt+F#, or esc.

The way I ran into this problem is that I disconnected one drive to plug in a
friends drive. Then my computer failed to boot (as I missed the prompt about
the missing mount points).

[Bug 1071545] [NEW] Ran out of disk space during upgrade from 11.10->12.04

2012-10-25 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Public bug reported:

Original summary: package linux-image-3.2.0-32-generic 3.2.0-32.51
failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-
installation script returned error exit status 2

I ran out of space. I knew before hand that I was short on space, but
the installer said I was ok. Crash ensued, and this bug report was
requested. That's the whole of the story. I guess the estimation of
how much disk space that is needed is slightly off, and maybe it is
kernel install related. Anyway, I leave that speculation to you smarter
folks.

[Bug 1045993] Re: remove chromium 18

2012-09-04 Thread Daniel Hollocher
I hope you can understand that this policy is frustrating for everyone
involved with chromium. There are already uptodate builds of chromium
available, as I already pointed out. I can only imagine that the devs
get frustrated when users complain about issues in abandoned versions.
I know first hand that those that volunteer to support chromium are
frustrated because of all the bogus complaints and bug reports based on
outdated versions - that they continually have to say the same thing
over and over "please update".

Anyway, could you at least link to the bug report that describes the
blocking issues for at least getting the ppas going again?

[Bug 329809] Re: sound-juicer crashes when pressing "Extract" button, with SIGSEGV in filepath_parse_pattern()

2012-03-25 Thread Daniel Hollocher
hmmm, I doubt that it will be included sergey. I might take a look at
that patch, see if it applies to whatever the next release is, and maybe
open a new bug report to get it included.

[Bug 896571] Re: fails to boot, 2.6.38-12

2011-11-30 Thread Daniel Hollocher
During the process of trying to collect those boot logs, I think I
figured out what the problem was: I didn't have linux-headers-generic
installed. Thus, dkms was failing to compile the nvidia module, thus
Xorg failed to load.

Strange enough, apt does not seem to be enforcing the depends that
nvidia-current has on linux-headers-generic. (It makes sense that I
might lose the package since I use an automated tool like debfoster to
clear out orphaned packages and programs from time to time). I really
don't know. The package info from `apt-cache show nvidia-current` has
allot of Modaliases info in it, which seems weird.

Let me know if you think there is a bug in all that that is worth
pursuing.

I doubt a bug fix like this will be backported. You may have to use a
later version of Ubuntu

[Bug 896571] Re: fails to boot, 2.6.38-12

2011-11-26 Thread Daniel Hollocher
FWIW, I posted this bug from 2.6.38-11 which boots fine. The previous
boot was from a custom patched kernel based off -11, and the boot before
that was a failed 2.6.38-12. I have no idea how to collect info off of
the frozen boot.

[Bug 896571] [NEW] fails to boot, 2.6.38-12

2011-11-26 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Public bug reported:

I quickly hit 'esc' as soon as the splash screen hits, and the last
message is about the battery being ok (this is a desktop). Then it
stops. I can still type characters at this state.

If I just let the normal splash screen go, all the dots go red, and it
freezes in that state.

[Bug 424927] Re: include CK patch set (BFS)

2011-07-15 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Hey folks, so I think it makes sense to wrap up this bug at some point.
I've created a team here: https://launchpad.net/~ck-patchset

I thought it would be nice to have a bug tracker, but a team with a
mailing list might be all that we need.

I'm going to leave everything as is for now, and if moving to a team
continues to make sense to me after awhile, I will close out this bug
and the forums thread, and invite everyone to join the team/mailing
list.

[Bug 598627] Re: driver doesn't build for kernel not running

2011-07-14 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Hey Mario,
The kernel I put together has the same packaging as the vanilla kernel, to the
best of my ability, and as far as I can tell.

It has been awhile since I have run into this, and I don't remember
exactly what the issue was. Right now, the custom kernel installs fine,
and uses the driver fine, etc. Looking that nvidia-current.postinst,
this still looks like it will be an issue when the graphics driver is
upgraded. nvidia-current.postinst only installs the driver for the
currently running kernel. So anyone running more than one kernel will
have an issue, not just those running a custom kernel.

I completely understand that this affects only a small minority of
users. I hope you don't mind that I will continue to use this bug to
track whatever the best solution is.
