[Bug 928553] Re: Non-default wallpapers are not readable by Unity-Greeter

2016-04-21 Thread Dario Bertini
Personally, I haven't been affected by this bug anymore.

(Also, I stopped having my HOME encrypted, and now I use full disk
encryption, which is a better solution anyhow)

Now, when you right click on an image and "Set as wallpaper", it'll get
copied to ~/Pictures/Wallpapers this folder is world readable, so if the
issue was with the folder, it's now solved. The file itself still
retains its permissions, but I think this is on purpose.

If a custom wallpaper is added with the + button inside the control
panel, the picture is not copied, so you'd need to workaround that
manually.

I think all of this might still be an issue if the HOME is encrypted.

[Bug 1571668] Re: Mysql upgrade locks out its root user

2016-04-20 Thread Dario Bertini
For those who are wondering:

My solution is to simply not use 5.7, and manually install mysql-
server-5.6 (after all, the application that I'm working on still needs a
bunch of changes to be able to work with 5.7's new stricter defaults)

Ok, at the very least this needs some documentation though. Since
neither Mysql's own documentation nor Ubuntu's community wiki have any

[Bug 1571668] Re: Mysql upgrade locks out its root user

2016-04-19 Thread Dario Bertini
Thank you, indeed I had the suspicion that some kind of local socket
authentication might've been disabled, instead of changing the password.

> I think it's something else - please see below. Based on this, you
should be able to change the root password to something non-empty with
"sudo dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server-5.7" and then logging in as a non-
root user should work. Alternatively, you should be able to log in as
the mysql root user that has an empty password if you run the client as
Unix root (eg. with sudo).

I did already attempt the dpkg-reconfigure, but that's not useful (You
can select the password only when creating a new datadir with empty
config, and thus a dpkg-reconfigure does not suffice).

logging in with sudo instead works, but weirdly if then I

ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'a';

I cannot login as normal user by supplying password `a`, and otoh I can
still login by sudo-ing and without providing any mysql password. (I
presume that this happens due to something like disabling the ability to
change permissions when logging in via sudo... weird that this doesn't
explicitly generate an error, though)

2016-04-18 Thread Dario Bertini
I just realized that not even the

mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables --skip-networking

solution will work, since after logging in

ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY '';

will fail with

ERROR 1524 (HY000): Plugin 'auth_socket' is not loaded

(the same applies for the old command: `SET PASSWORD FOR
'root'@'localhost' = PASSWORD('');`)

And trying

install plugin auth_socket soname 'auth_socket.so';

will only result in

ERROR 1030 (HY000): Got error 1 from storage engine

[Bug 1571668] [NEW] Mysql upgrade locks out its root user

2016-04-18 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

If you have a mysql database with an empty root password (like we have
here for development purpose) with mysql 5.6, with the upgrade to 16.04
you'll find yourself locked out on mysql 5.7

The problem is the new feature of mysql-server that generates a
temporary password.

Unfortunately, this password is not recorded anywhere, neither in a
.mysql_secret file (if the deprecated mysql_install_db script would've
been used) which is nowhere on the filesystem, nor in the mysql logs.
(Like instead it is on Windows or Red Hat, apparently).

The only solution (aside from wiping the db, and selecting a new
password at install time), is to follow the instructions to reset
permissions:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/resetting-permissions.html?acf=1

(but you won't be able to simply use the --init-file option, due to the
apparmor sandboxing of mysqld)

I attached a simple terminal session that demonstrates the issue

Yes, but the release notes cannot be seen anywhere at installation time,
if I'm not wrong. People would need to explicitly look for it.

Wouldn't it be possible to add a dpkg configure prompt ask for
confirmation to the user? (just like for the accept-license prompts)

"We detected that you're running in UEFI mode, XEN is currently
unsupported on this configuration. Continue at your own risk [yes]

[Bug 1349711] Re: Machine lockup in btrfs-transaction

2016-04-09 Thread Dario Bertini
With btrfs-tools 4.0-2, and kernel 4.2.0-34-generic, I got a kthread
pegging up 1 core at 100%, and the whole system was almost completely
unusable.

this persisted for several minutes. Then it quieted down, and then the
problem reappeared... even after rebooting.

I had 2GB of free space. I now freed up a bit more, and I have 30GB...
let's see if it'll happen again.

While it was happening, I got some perf dump with:

sudo perf record -g --proc-map-timeout 10 -a sleep 10

and I found that most of the time was spent in
native_queued_spin_lock_slowpath (name not unexpected, since it's a spin
lock), I'll attach the perf.data now (I have 3 of them)

[Bug 1401322] Re: Upgrade to Python 2.7.9

For the people annoyed at the idea to move to 16.04:

[Bug 1530876] [NEW] texlive-latex-extra should depend on texlive-fonts-extra

2016-01-04 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

This is not the same thing as bug 1225697 but it's closely related.

That bug is supposedly fixed in Debian, but (unless the Ubuntu packages
differ in a significant way) I doubt it.

The situation now is arguably worse, for the people that (like me)
weren't using particular features/fonts/styles in their documents, since
with the latest version of Ubuntu, it now suddenly fails to compile.

This is because packages like moderncv (which comes from texlive-latex-
extra) requires fontawesome (which come from texlive-fonts-extra), but
apt is not aware of this dependency.

(The best solution would be to have a more granular system rather than

[Bug 1520979] [NEW] Grub multiboot is unable to load Xen under EFI

2015-11-29 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

As a new Xen user, when I install the `xen-hypervisor-amd64` package,
I'd expect it to work fine.

But upon rebooting, even if Xen succeed to boot, the system is basically
unusable, and there are plenty of Irq errors in dmesg.

It turns out that EFI is not very well supported under Xen:

http://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Xen_EFI

The alternatives are:

- boot directly from the Efi (instead of relying on grub's multiboot)
- enable legacy boot in the EFI, and reinstall grub in bios-mode (and hope that
everything goes well)

Since I don't think that the latter can be automated, the first one
would be a better approach for ubuntu's packaging, I think.

But even if that's not possible, or there are no resources for it, at
least (until EFI on Grub won't be properly supported), either at install
time or at boot time, the fact that the system is running on EFI should
be detected, and explicitly warn the user (halt the boot process?) to
avoid leaving him in a puzzlingly half-working system.

[Bug 1290847] Re: pyvenv fails due to mising ensurepip module

2015-09-14 Thread Dario Bertini
@rspeer @wolfgang-richter

The bug is "sort of fixed"

You have to install python3-venv, this will make the ensurepip module
available, and the creation of a virtualenv will succeed

Imho this is an horrible naming choice: the error you'll get when trying
to run `python3 -m venv` mentions ensurepip, and most ubuntu/debian
users might have heard about the fact that ensurepip is disabled in the
distro

then, `apt list ensurepip` or `apt search ensurepip` won't yield any
useful results (just like I tried to do, before being puzzled about the
"fix released" status of this bug)

moreover, `--without-pip` will just work even without the new package,
making the name "python3-venv" even more misleading

Still, I'd caution you AGAINST using venv... I just found another
trivial bug. You're better off using virtualenv, given how it's battle
tested

[Bug 1290847] Re: pyvenv fails due to mising ensurepip module

2015-09-14 Thread Dario Bertini
PS: the bug I found is not truly a bug, just a difference in behaviour
between venv and virtualenv:

the former won't allow you to locally install packages when created with
--system-site-packages (making that flag effectively useless, imho),
while virtualenv will allow you to layer local packages upon the
globally installed ones

[Bug 1435108] [NEW] Volume hotkeys stop working (dozens of seconds of delay)

2015-03-22 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

This seems to be a similar problem to the one described here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1829744

With recent Ubuntu versions, though, gnome-settings-daemon is not there
anymore. I tried to kill unity-settings-daemon as a workaround, but it
doesn't work.

I followed the instructions here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting

and I can correctly see the keypresses be received correctly both with
xev and with evtest

with the latter, I can see that the interesting hotkeys codes:

Event: time 1427077143.513820, -- SYN_REPORT
Event: time 1427077143.616493, type 4 (EV_MSC), code 4 (MSC_SCAN), value ae
Event: time 1427077143.616493, type 1 (EV_KEY), code 114 (KEY_VOLUMEDOWN),
value 0
Event: time 1427077143.616493, -- SYN_REPORT
Event: time 1427077144.292461, type 4 (EV_MSC), code 4 (MSC_SCAN), value b0
Event: time 1427077144.292461, type 1 (EV_KEY), code 115 (KEY_VOLUMEUP), value 1

And the events can be seen even when the volume hotkeys are unresponsive
(the volume is not updated).

This seems to happen more often (or at least it's more noticeable to me)
when watching something in fullscreen.

Keypresses usually aren't lost, but are simply delayed and buffered, and
thus if I press the button 5/10 times, after half a minute of so, all
the keypresses will trigger the corresponding action all together

I don't have one with easy access for testing (In fact, the one with which I
witnessed this issue is 8600km away from me).
OTOH, I could give you the contact of the place (a youth hostel) that held the
access point, hoping they'd be cooperative

[Bug 1266226] Re: CredentialsError, stuck on "Getting Information, Please wait"

2014-01-25 Thread Dario Bertini
I worked around this issue with these instructions:
https://one.ubuntu.com/help/faq/what-should-i-do-if-authentication-
fails-auth_failed-state/

needless to say, I didn't manually remove my computer synchronization...
it seems suspicious to me that the web interface shows exactly 10
devices (some of these were devices I reinstalled from scratch), maybe
there's an hardcoded limit and by adding new devices old ones might get
deactivated? (weird, since it should prefer devices that haven't logged
in months, not my main computer)

Also, using seahorse is easy enough, but the ubuntu one preferences
should handle this automatically (or at the very least let the user know
where this information is stored)

[Bug 1266226] [NEW] CredentialsError, stuck on "Getting Information, Please wait"

2014-01-05 Thread Dario Bertini

It seems the problem is the same as this old bug, that has supposedly

I tried to reproduce the output of these log lines by killing the syncdaemon
and restarting it, but I only got this output once

Still, I think this is related to the actual error, since the stuck

What? I did that through the UI

As long as gvfs can see the volume, you can add smb volumes to Deja-Dup
just fine

[Bug 1249700] [NEW] evolution-source-registry locks keyboard and mouse input

2013-11-09 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

I updated ubuntu to 13.10, and now every time I login, I get the dreaded
bug #1142511

What's weird, is that the calendar auth popup doesn't let me interact
with anything else on the screen

I can only:

input a wrong password... the popup will disappear and reapper, still locking
the whole interface
input a good password (maybe, I can't test it, since it'd need an
application-specific password, and I can't open a browser to procure it)
select cancel... the popup is dismissed
press ctrl+alt+f#, and in a terminal kill the evolution-source-registry
process... this will let me go on

[Bug 1160847] Re: gvfs should not attempt to mount MTP devices in an endless loop (cluttering your desktop with messages)

2013-07-12 Thread Dario Bertini
I have a related problem: my Nexus S doesn't actually expose MTP, and so
gvfs pops up an error dialog each time I plug it in

I checked, and this seems to have been already fixed upstream: (4e21 is the
wrong id... 4e25 apparently is fine)
http://sourceforge.net/p/libmtp/code/ci/master/tree/src/music-players.h

If current devices truly have a different id when they have MTP enabled
or not, I think that Ubuntu on phablet should just be a good citizen,
and change it as well

[Bug 1114281] Re: ERROR @wl_cfg80211_get_station : Could not get rate (-1)

2013-06-12 Thread Dario Bertini
This is clearly NOT a duplicate of

that bug deals with output cluttering
this deals with non-functional wi-fi (possibly, it could be marked as
incomplete, since it seems hard to reproduce without doing an upgrade from a
previous ubuntu version)

but the log is being spammed also with messages of

"could not get rate" from get_station
"error" from invar_get
"error" from get_tx_power

There's a similar issue, when it asks for the password, but in the
meanwhile it can actually connect... but for each failed tentative or
something, it'll pop up a new prompt

I found out that in my case that was due to multiple connections were
set up for the same wifi (it was done automatically... maybe when OKing
on a prompt that happens when the signal strength is low), deleting them
helped out

apparently it's not in the 12.04 repositories... I don't know if it's worth it

[Bug 214786] Re: Apple USB ISO keyboard has incorrectly swapped keys

2013-02-06 Thread Dario Bertini
I'm affected by this problem as well, but the hid_apple fix didn't work
for me

this is weird, since I'm using the hid_apple.conf already to use the
special keys as default:

> cat /etc/modprobe.d/hid_apple.conf
options hid_apple iso_layout=0 fnmode=1

I tried all of the 3 alternatives that have been written here:
http://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Apple/PageFragmentKeyboard

but not even setting it from GRUB is working

I cannot use the xmodmap setting for a different reason, it seems that I'm
affected by this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-evdev/+bug/289781

the weird thing is that I don't have the evdev module loaded (I guess
that the keyboard driver is supplied through usbhid or something like
that), so for now I'm refraining to set that bug back to confirmed

I also tried to use this file for startup:

> cat .config/autostart/xmodmap.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=xmodmap -e "keycode 49 = 0x3c 0x3e" -e "keycode 94 = 0x5c 0x7c"
Hidden=false
NoDisplay=false
X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false
Name=remap < and \
Comment=

but it doesn't work (it's for the italian layout if you need it)

If I remember correctly, some time ago I also tried to put a script in
/etc/acpi/resume.sh (now probably it should go into /etc/pm/sleep.d/ )
to no avail

and finally, sebastien bacher suggested me to use a gnome-settings-daemon hook:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-settings-daemon/commit/?id=2ec0fbd38cd9d787fc3ad003f462c537ea795890

I wrote this small script

#! /usr/bin/env python3

import argparse
from subprocess import check_call as call
from os.path import expanduser

parser = argparse.ArgumentParser()
parser.add_argument('-t')
parser.add_argument('-i')
parser.add_argument('name')
args = parser.parse_args()

if __name__ == '__main__':
try:
if args.t in ("added", "present") and args.i == "10":
call(["xmodmap", expanduser("~/.Xmodmap")])

#EOF
(I also added some error checking when debugging it, and 10 is the XID obtained
from xinput)

and I added it to g-s-d with

gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.input-devices
hotplug-command '/path/to/mac_keyboard_fix.py'

but apparently, gnome-settings-daemon receives a device-added signal,
only for device #11(touchpad) and #14(unknown)

(so, this seems to be denying the hypothesis that the problem is due to
the driver loading the keyboard as a completely different keyboard)

right now, I'm not sure why, but when doing a suspend/resume, if I
previously applied the xmodmap, the change retains... but in the
meanwhile I removed the python script, deactivated the .desktop startup
item, and nothing else should be able to change the behaviour after-
resume without also changing it after bootup, so I'm quite baffled

I get fed up by this issue every few months, and I try to find a
workaround that works once and for all (unless something makes the
xmodmap script working, that is)... but now I've spent too much time on
this, I just hope that something/somebody will improve the situation in
the next months

[Bug 1092232] [NEW] Workspace switcher should ignore pointer position

2012-12-19 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

This behaviour wasn't there in 12.04 as far as I can remember:

-Go to workspace 1
-Have the mouse pointer in any area of the screen, except the top left quarter,
or the dash
-Open the workspace switcher with Super+S
the workspace view is open
-Press again Super+S (or without having released Super, press again S)

What is expected:
Unity goes back to the same workspace as before

What happens:
Unity goes to the workspace that is under the mouse pointer (so: workspace 2 if
at the top right, 3 if at the bottom left, 4 if at the bottom right)

I want to stress that even only the pointer location matters

If the user would've clicked the underlying workspace, or selected it
with the cursor keys, this would've been fine

Use case:
I have other applications opened in other workspaces... to get a glance of the
status of a long-running operation, or to get a quick reminder of which
applications are globally open (possibly easier to visually parse than glancing
at the small white arrows in the dash) I sometimes use the Super+S shortcut
followed quickly again by Super+S... this bug breaks it

[Bug 1073775] [NEW] Lock menu option responds slowly

2012-10-31 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

This happens when selecting lock from the unity menu more than one time:

steps to reproduce:
1-click on the cog/power icon at the right end of the unity menu
2-click on Lock
3-insert your password to unlock
4-click on the cog/power icon at the right end of the unity menu
5-click on lock

what happens:
it takes several seconds for the screen to become locked (sometimes even
minutes!)

this doesn't affect the keyboard shortcut

using ctrl+alt+L will lock the screen instantly each and every time

[Bug 1072120] Re: ~/.Xmodmap not read on login

2012-10-31 Thread Dario Bertini
I also have this problem, lightdm is the only login manager in use, and
I don't have XKB set

Ryan Kaskel, what workaround do you use?
I tried to add "xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap" to my ~/.xsessionrc but it doesn't fix
anything (but the rest of the file is sourced correctly)... maybe it's related
to the underlying problem?

[Bug 961473] [NEW] Authentication dialog has redundant text

this is the dialog:

"Authenticate" is written 4 times, I think that the dialog could be
simplified by removing the non-bold text

[Bug 961424] [NEW] When in the Workspace Switcher, clicking on the launcher changes the application focus but not the workspace focus

2012-03-21 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1- Have 2 different applications in 2 different workspaces
2- from the currently focused application's workspace, activate the switcher
3- click the other application's icon in the launcher: the focus correctly
switches to the other one (and it's raised if there were other windows in
between)
4- double click on the same icon to exit the switcher

you are being brought back to the first workspace, and the menu bar
won't show any menu at all

[Bug 961140] Re: synclient ClickFinger configuration is ignored

2012-03-21 Thread Dario Bertini
** Description changed:

This is related, but is not the same bug as

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/936341

this appeared only recently in the last 2 weeks, and it affects both the
  3 finger (ClickFinger3) and the 2 finger (ClickFInger2) settings

now, by default this is the output of synclient:

- ClickFinger1= 1
- ClickFinger2= 3
- ClickFinger3= 0
+ ClickFinger1= 1
+ ClickFinger2= 3
+ ClickFinger3= 0

this is wrong: there's not reason to disable ClickFinger3 while leaving
enabled ClickFinger2 (and maybe this is the cause for bug 936341)
- if ClickFInger2 & 3 would've been disabled, that'd have been a change in
behaviour that should be documented
+ if both ClickFInger2 & 3 would've been disabled, that'd have been a change in
behaviour that should be documented

but now, by changing any of the ClickFinger settings (any of the 1,2 or
  3) the setting is ignored and it generates a button1 event for all of
  these, regardless of it

I found this thread in the ubuntu-devel mailing list, and what I'm
referring to with "ClickFinger" there seems to be called "click
actions", it appears that this change may be the cause of this bug, but
  Chase Douglas writes:

"There are no changes for devices that have separate physical buttons."

Instead, I'm stumbling onto this problem on a old macbook3,1 with a
physical button (synclient correctly reports the ClickPad set at 0)

I'm not sure if this is an unintended consequence on old machine with a
non-clickpad synaptic touchpad, or if this is expected

if it's the latter, aside from documenting it on the wiki, I think that
then the ClickFinger options should be removed, if truly the ClickPad
  changes makes them unusable

This is quite a problem, since on these devices you can't enable the

+ PS Uhm, I just saw that the bug has been reported to the overlay-scrollbar

+ the external hd has 4 lvm volumes... when plugging it in, it creates a

[Bug 936343] [NEW] Lightdm locks up after logout from guest session

2012-02-19 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

-log in your user
-get into a guest session
-logout from the guest session
-lightdm is on the front, but it's completely unresponsive to user input...
there's no feedback when typing your user password

workaround:

-ctrl+alt+f# to switch to a vt
-switch back to the X vt, and lightdm will be gone (instead, the lock screen
will be shown... that one will let you get back to your session)

I tested it with the guest session, so the user configuration shouldn't
matter

btw, if you truly are unaffected... then it could be something dependent
on the graphics stack? Here I have an intel gm965

This is only a guess, but given the similarity of the problem, and the
timeframe... maybe a change in how gtk considers the widgets to be

[Bug 930978] [NEW] Super+W shortcut inconsistent

2012-02-12 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

There're 2 ways to undo things like showing the dash, the applications
switcher or such:

Press ESC, or press again the shortcut that activated the effect

examples:

Dash: press Super to go back to the desktop

Workspace Switcher: press Super+S to go back

but this doesn't work reliably with the window switcher:

Pressing ESC is fine, pressing W again without releasing Super is fine
also... but pressing Super+W after having released the previous Super+W
will simultaneously trigger the Dash

I demoed this in the screencast: before I showed the (correct) behaviour
that happens when not releasing Super, after I show the actual problem

(on top of this: displaying 2 simultaneous animations like this is prone
to slow both of them down, crippling the smoothness of the desktop)

[Bug 926441] Re: Unity shortcut overlay displays wrong keyboard shortcut

2012-02-12 Thread Dario Bertini
I thought that the shortcut was supposed to be "Super+cursor", given
that this is a different shortcut from the usual one (and seems
consistent with the usage of the Super key in the rest of unity)

Is this commit right?

[Bug 924468]

2012-02-04 Thread Dario Bertini
copypaste of my comment on the empathy bug at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=669169

"""Ok, I used that build (made at commit
0dc2ba9ea63c7d7d7f46b4d4e8b9311dfad823bb
) and indeed the problem seems to be absent

I can't remember how it worked before this bug, but it still seems it doesn't
work perfectly: after networkmanager reconnects, empathy stays unconnected for
quite a while, then throws an error (only for the facebook account), then
successfully connects on its own (both to gtalk and facebook, don't know about
bonjour)... after all of this, there's a spinner that keeps moving forever,
suggesting that it's still trying to connect to something (thus wasting cpu
cycles)

manually disconneting in empathy and reconnecting fixes this"""
