[Bug 1773859] Re: upgrades to 18.04 fail

2018-08-24 Thread David Anderson
I thought one aspect of the bug that nobody specifically highlighted was
interesting:

dpkg-divert: error: rename involves overwriting
'/usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.systemd1.service' with
  different file
'/usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.systemd1.service.systemd',
not allowed

Notice the replacement has an extra .systemd on the end of the name.

The fix instructions reported above worked for me.

[Bug 1492778] Re: kde crashes when powering on/off monitor

2018-01-01 Thread David Anderson
I had this problem using Kubuntu 16.04 and KDE 5.5.5. A workaround that
worked for me was to change the compositor via System Settings, Display
and Monitor, Compositor, Rendering backend, set to XRender. I can now
turn the TV off and on again without it freezing KDE.

This workaround came from the following page:
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/219073/how-to-enable-plasma-kde-automatic-restart-upon-freeze

[Bug 1688933] Re: systemd restart-loops logind

2017-11-20 Thread David Anderson
Does anyone have an idea how to do a temp fix job on this? For us, this
happens on an off the shelf gitlab AWS image (Ubuntu 16.04) Because the
gitlab runners ssh into the gitlab server very many times, each one of
those ssh logins needs to timeout on the login1 hand off and sometimes
it crashes the build, so it's pretty serious for us. This is our log

The suggestions about libmlt libmlt++3 and getting same from current

libmlt6_6.4.1-5_amd64.deb)
won't install on x86_64 16.04 without getting several other things.

[Bug 1395635] Re: export videos without sound

2017-07-11 Thread David Anderson
libmlt libmlt++3 in Ubuntu 16.04 are still 6.0.0.0-2 .
So openshot still won't generate sound in an output video.
Debian current is 6.4.x.x for some x.x.
Openshot 2.3.4.

While nothing in openshot says what the grayed-out square/circle/slash
related to sound
in the attached property screenshot mean it is perhaps a hint
openshot won't write some sound?

[Bug 1692997] [NEW] libelf test for section size in wrong place

2017-05-23 Thread David Anderson
Public bug reported:

It seems to me that the test for an invalid section size
wants be moved up from the map case to cover both the read and the map
case.

To guard against a bogus section size for both cases.
Rather than relying on a malloc failure to catch a
completely bogus section size.
Thus allowing a more accurate error indication.

[Bug 1571395] Re: Nmap gets Segmentation fault when scanning local network with service fingerprinting.

2017-02-17 Thread David Anderson
Regrettably I don't have much additional data, but nmap has been crashing
irregularly for me. At least daily. I get a crash notification window and
clicking 'details' I see that /usr/bin/nmap is the culprit.

nmap -sV -oG /tmp/tediptmpout -p80 '192.168.x.140-200'
(obscuring the actual local ipv4 subnet with an x here)

is the specific command used.

It gets used several times a day to find a device ip on local lan
and extract data from the device.
I never saw this problem before 16.04

Today I got fed up with this and downloaded nmap source version 7.40
and built it. Installed in /usr/local/bin.

So far that is working fine, but it is too early to say it solves the
problem.

[Bug 1532226] Re: No menu bar in gtk apps on fresh boot

2016-11-18 Thread David Anderson
Fully up to date 16.04 . The initctl above restores the items, but
on moving the mouse in and out of the libreoffice panel
the menu bar vanishes, never to return.
On one occasion moving mouse in and out of the libreoffice document
twice was needed to lose the menu bar.

[Bug 1434570] Re: 64-bit BOINC crashes with ever NVidia driver

2016-06-18 Thread David Anderson
Xubuntu 14.04. This really bites as of 3.13.0-88 #135. X86_64
Installing nvidia drivers via additional drivers menu works and X works
so I have a desktop.

No matter which nvidia I select. But boinc cannot see my pair
of GTX-760 GPUs

If I install nvidia-modprobe then X no longer comes up.
ssh from another machine works.

What have had to do after every recent kernel update (because
X would not come up after reboot) was

sudo apt-get purge 'nvidea*'
reboot (now in nouveau),
if necessary twice to get clean shutdown.

Using additional drivers, select one nvidia or another.
reboot (now in nvidia),
if necessary twice to get clean shutdown.

Boinc would not see the GPUS.
sudo apt-get install nvidia-modprobe
(which installs a 340 modprobe, rather old)
reboot.

But now as of 3.13.0-88 #135. X86_64
the nvidia modprobe kills X. No desktop.

[Bug 1492617] Re: Kernel Oops during boot

2015-09-06 Thread David Anderson
Ok. Rewiring to have the secondary disk only I was able to
boot of secondary and that worked.

Rewired back to 2 disks, primary as primary in the wiring.

In grub booted into recovery mode.

Used the dpkg option to get updated and remount as rw.

Got into root shell from grub extended manu and did
   apt-get remove 'nvidia*'
The quotes being essential.
Should probably have done purge, but..did not.
That removed the nvidia and did some kernel stuff.
exited shell and (as the on screen note warned)
only got back to a root shell. Shutdown.
Then rebooted and the system restarts normally! Yay!

The question, of course, is when I reinstall nvidia
what will happen? But at least the sytem boots and lightdm
runs now, normally. And I know how to get back to this state.

[Bug 1492617] Re: Kernel Oops during boot

2015-09-06 Thread David Anderson
Installed 14.04 on second drive from CD with primary disc unconnected..

Boot off of secondary disc with primary disconnected
using default 14.04 settings and
driver and the system comes up with xfce properly.

Attempted to boot off secondary disk with grub with both
connected but that failed. I note that Grub listed Ubuntu
10.10 for the secondary but that make no sense now
since I just replaced the old 10.10 on
the secondary disk with 14.04 (clean install).
dmesg on second drive boot 14.04 shows nouveau
driver.

I'm as puzzled as ever. No idea how to proceed
to identify the problem with the primary or fix it.

[Bug 1492617] Re: Kernel Oops during boot

2015-09-06 Thread David Anderson
All back to normal running nVidia drivers.

For 14.04 ignore advice about /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Irrelevant.
Instead, boot into recovery mode in the grub menu.

Go into a shell (root shell) from the grub recovery menu.
# make read-write
mount -o remount,rw /
# remove nvidia packages.
apt-get purge 'nvidia*'
exit

The apt-get command needs the quotes
around nvidia*.

You will get a warnng that the first reboot might not be
enough. I had to boot twice.

Now in the  Settings->Addtional Drivers
select the nvidia driver you want.

Then
sudo apt-get install nvidia-modprobe

Now reboot and all will, I hope, be good
for you too.

Problem solved.

[Bug 1492617] [NEW] Kernel Oops during boot

2015-09-05 Thread David Anderson
Public bug reported:

System crash during boot. First encountered when booting
3.13.0-63-generic #103-Ubuntu on restart after upgrade
from 3.13.0-62. that crashes the same way during boot.

I tried using grub and booted into 3.13.0-62 but that
behaved the same. The data that should be here

System remounts disk readonly
and boots. I can ssh in to the system (but being read only
cannot change anything).

Ran memory test overnight (about 1.5 complete cycles
of the test) and no errors.

(on the --63)
uname -a
Linux Dseti3.home 3.13.0-63-generic #103-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 14 21:42:59 UTC 2015
 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Two nVidia GTX 760 GPUs.
Using nVidia drivers because using OpenCL for boinc Seti@home
and Einstein@home.

I removed one GPU (as a test) and reboot encountered the same problem.

Suggestions as to how to figure out what is wrong would
be most welcome.

[Bug 1479584] [NEW] radiotray on xfce: no menus, no icon. Unusable

2015-07-29 Thread David Anderson
Public bug reported:

With xfce and Thunar radio tray is not usable. It does not show up in any panel
so there is no way
to access its menus. According to its log
~/.locale/share/radiotray/radiotray.log
it starts fine. And ps -eaf shows itlive.
But without a way to access the menus it cannot work.
This on a machine converted from gnome to xfce and on another
with xubuntu installed from the beginning.

On 14.04 running gnome ( using metacity
not unity), on the other hand, the radiotray icon
shows up and it all works properly.

Nothing I can find mentions any special actions to make radiotray
work on xfce...

==log entries, latest radiotray startup:

[Bug 1258231] Re: NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

2013-12-07 Thread David Anderson
12 core machine running 13.10, Saucy Salamander.
Never saw these problems before 13.10 .

3.11.0-14-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP X86_64
319.32 nvidia gets kernel error
319.60 nvidia does not (so far) get kernel error.

26 November 9AM: softwareupdates-additional drivers-
switched to the nvidia 319.60 'proprietary' driver (from
   319.32 'proprietary tested'). Rebooted.

Turned on Seti@home gpu processingand seti@home did a number of GPU
runs without difficulty. That is 10 days, no problem.

5 December 4PM: as a test, switched back to the 319.32 nvidia
   driver. Rebooted.

7 December 4:16AM: Got kernel warnings, the first is.
   /var/log/syslog:Dec 7 04:16:34 Dseti3 kernel: [129416.201395] NVRM:
os_schedule: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context
4800 lines like that. Including a few 'CPU#0 stuck'.

So that is just 36 hours till a problem arose.
10AM: Switched back to 319.60 driver. Rebooted.
   Resuming seti@home

This test may mean nothing, but 319.60 does let me do useful GPU work,
so far.

With Ringtail-13.04 I can access Android 4.2.2 data on my Galaxy Nexus .

A big advantage for 13.04 over 12.10. Thanks to all the folks who made this

On a recent reboot I found my nvidia 560 TI unrecognized by boinc. Powered
down, reseated the card and its power lines and on reboot it was recognized.

2012-12-08 Thread David Anderson

On connecting usb cable
a photo-reader connection starts up and when I close that there is no device
visible, no

[Bug 1075837] Re: upgrade 12.10, launcher bar no app tabs

2012-11-08 Thread David Anderson
Another machine here, x86_64. UPgraded 11.10-12.04-12.10 just now, and the
launcher bar
works perfectly with gnome classic. What the critical differences are
that make one machine not have a usable launcher bar is a mystery to me.

[Bug 1075837] Re: upgrade 12.10, launcher bar no app tabs

2012-11-07 Thread David Anderson
Denis refers to Gnome Classic (and Gnome Classic (no effects))
with that bar on the bottom. The workspace boxes at the right
of that bar show up for me and work properly, showing
the active apps. But the minimized apps
never show along the bottom.

I tried all 3 nvidia proprietary drivers available through the software-updater
/system-settings. Highest numbered 304.51. None made the
slightest difference.

Minimized apps disappear from the launcher bar at the bottom
but are still live.Which is quite annoying. So it's impossible
to usefully minimize things. All has to stay open on desktop to be usable.

[Bug 1075837] Re: upgrade 12.10, launcher bar no app tabs

2012-11-07 Thread David Anderson
In case it was not obvious above: running apps in 12.10 never appear in the
launcher bar.
Running or minimized. (Not referring to the workspace boxes at the lower right
of the bar, but to the entire white bar at the bottom, left of the workspace
boxes).
Not present when an app started, and do not
appear at any time, so when one minimizes (say a terminal session) the terminal
session is not visible on the desktop anywhere with Gnome Classic.

[Bug 901215] Re: Can not mount Hitachi Mobile Pro TOURO hard drive by USB

2012-09-08 Thread David Anderson
With trepidation. Downloaded i386 general (and the 'all' ) debs to a clean
directory and did sudo -i *.deb. Got errors (nvidia isues). Booted to the
kernel anyway and
it worked though the screen was sort of scrunched. commented out the uas
blacklist.
Rebooted to the new kernel again. And the Touro mounted fine and dismounted.

So then I rebooted back to the latest standard 12.04 generic-pae which I
normally run,
currently 3.2.0-30-generic-pae #48-Ubuntu. Things look normal.
And the Touro still mounts and dismounts. So how does that make any sense?
How could Touro mount now when it did not a few days ago?

I am totally confused.

[Bug 901215] Re: Can not mount Hitachi Mobile Pro TOURO hard drive by USB

2012-09-08 Thread David Anderson
Well, none of my comments really belong in this bug report, probably. Sorry.
But Touro is now mounting ok, but on rightmouse (with cores not running seti at
all)
can safely remove drive but after a few seconds it remounts itself. I can
unplug
after the safely-remove-drive ok, but if I don't it remounts. Odd. Seems
repeatable.
Never noticed this before. Running latest stock 12.04, not rc4.

Something odd about the Touro, that seems fairly clear.

Experiment: stock 12.04 as show just above (not rc4). 100% seti running on
both cores. No problem with
Touro other than the 'it remounts itself' behavior. Multiple 'safely
remove' actions.
Booted in current standard generic-pae, I used synaptic to remove all 4 deb rc4
packages Ming Lei asked me to try.

Linux q2 3.2.0-29-generic-pae #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:25:43 UTC

Like Lorenz it stopped again at some point and I have
to blacklist uas. It is 'blacklist uas', not uad. In
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

With the blacklist on as shown below the Touro mounts again, normally.

My blacklist.conf, part of it, as of a few minutes ago:

# Trying this so Hitachi Touro will be usable.
# Jan 11, 2012. See bug 901215, linux bug.
# Mar 11, still not working if uas present.
# Sometimes fails even if this blacklist command present.
# April 26 giving up on blacklist command it is no help.
# Worked without blacklist for a while.
# Sep 4, 2012 not working, so try blacklist again.
blacklist uas

I removed oss4-base and there were no dependencies, indicating it was entirely
my fault
from the beginning. The offending oss4 files are gone from modprobe.d and
a reboot shows sound is working.

dpkg.log.1 shows the install on July 17.

Thanks to all who commented, you helped a lot.
Sorry I caused you to spend time repairing my mistake.

I've learned a fair amount in the process, and I appreciate the

Sound was working after Feb 15. For sure (youtube videos worked).

Are the *noALSA sensible? Should I just comment out the blacklist
snd-hda-intel and reboot
as a test?
How could those noALSA be present? Something I did somehow?

I have not modified these modprobe.d files by hand aside from commenting out
a blacklist uas in blacklist.conf for a Hitachi Touro that temporarily
helped with a Hitachi Touro USB drive for a while (but is now supported in 12.04
so the uas blacklist is unneeded).

I edited oss4-base_noALSA.conf

Added the comment, commented out the blacklist as follows (showing in

# this is our sound. DavidA. Do not blacklist.
#blacklist snd-hda-intel

On reboot sound works without any problem I can find.
So... why is that noALSA there, I wonder?
Something I did somehow?

2012-08-21 Thread David Anderson
I have some backups of etc (not every day), and I keep pretty much up to date
with 12.04 updates.

On July 16 2012, the *noALSA files were not there in /etc/modprobe.d.
On July 18, the *noALSA files were present.
So sound disappeared at the next reboot after July 18.

I do not know or recall why oss4 appears.

The No such file or directory entries (where present for both etc30 and

the entry is a symlink to a file not part of /etc, and not in the tarfile.

[Bug 1035474] Re: [Asus P5Q3 deluxe] PCI/internal sound card not detected

2012-08-20 Thread David Anderson
I was unclear, sorry.

In early 12.04 sound loaded and ran fine.

At some point in routine updates it stopped loading, and in -29-pae it does NOT
load automatically, though
the modprobe loads it (thus providing a workaround).

When I went back (using grub) to -24-pae sound did NOT load. In other words
going
back to an earlier kernel with grub did not make sound work at boot.

Unfortunately, the above experiments do not really prove when sound stopped
working.
The experiments do not prove sound was failing in -24-pae. And in fact I have
the vague
impression sound was *working* in -24-pae and even later but have no way
I know of to confirm or deny that impression.
Sorry.

I made a brief effort to find the source code as I wondered what the
alsa-restore error code 19 meant,
but that effort failed.

2012-08-19 Thread David Anderson
Rebooted, current kernel (-29-pae)
Without modprobe, I have no sound devices in system settings (aside from dummy
device).

After modprobe, I have internal sound device listed in system settings
and sound works . Speakers work and skype test-call got my speaking so
microphone works.

This is a fine workaround. I remain willing to run further tests if
they will help.

[Bug 1035474] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2012-08-11 Thread David Anderson
As a sanity check I booted from the first live CD I came across in a stack
(Ubuntu 10.10)
and its sound settings panel says Internal Audio 1 Output 1 Input Analog
Stereo Duplex
and once I turned off 'mute' there the speakers worked fine.

So rebooted into 12.04. No sound.
Same alsa-restore terminated message in dmesg output as dtl131 noted above.

Urbaman, this 127 error is off topic. And your email address is hidden. But I
would guess you built your own
7.0.27 boinc source (which creates libboinc_api.so.6 and some related links)
and only partially installed it.
Get rid of that and follow the instructions provided by Daniel to install the
ppa. Please don't
muddy this bug report with off topic posts. Thanks. Email me if you need to
(not that I am
an expert in building boinc, I much prefer to install a prebuilt package...).

This seems very similar to 886699 in that resize fixes it.

[Bug 894314] Re: oneconf takes up half of the memory

2012-04-22 Thread David Anderson
I've found that the best workaround is to disable oneconf (so as to
avoid removing software-center and ubuntu-desktop).

sudo chmod a-x /usr/share/oneconf/oneconf-service
sudo chmod a-x /usr/share/oneconf/oneconf-query
sudo chmod a-x /usr/share/oneconf/oneconf-update

And then I killed the running process oneconf-service via System
Monitor. Goodbye Oneconf, thanks for the memory back. I did this a while
back in 11.10 and had no problems as a result. I've now tried it in
12.04 as the bug remains.

[Bug 901215] Re: Can not mount Hitachi Mobile Pro TOURO hard drive by USB

2012-01-11 Thread David Anderson
I get 'blacklist.conf' editting (a vi guy here), but if someone would kindly
suggest the exact change that you experts
have hinted at that would be great. Ubuntu 11.10 here, the same device as
Lorenz G just mentioned,
a 500GB Touro.

[Bug 714362] [NEW] Natty crash in live mode, and after install

2011-02-06 Thread David Anderson
Public bug reported:

This is from a Natty CD that had its MD5 checked as accurate, and checked as
accurate by the live checker when you boot into it.
During the opening of the live CD, when I pressed a key to go into the more
verbose mode instead of the Ubuntu logo with the progress dots, it just
stopped after a little while, and never booted.
I then proceeded to boot from the live CD without going into the more verbose
mode, and it worked fine. I installed it, and it booted successfully. I then
installed all the updates from the update manager and Nvidia driver from the
Additional Drivers tool. I restarted to apply the updates, and then during
boot, it just stopped after Checking Battery State or a similar battery
check. On trying again, it stopped after saying something about a bad USB check
or something. I then proceeded to try to install it again twice. The first time
it crashed during install and said the CD was scratched, or the drive was bad.
The next time it crashed without giving me a useful error. The live CD runs
fine, but install is really being a pain. Also, during the install, during the
slideshow, it keeps saying Ubuntu 10.10 when this is 11.04.
Attatched is the LSHW hardware info for my machine.
I downloaded this ISO-

Re: [Bug 318812] Re: *** buffer overflow detected ***: xfig terminated

2009-08-06 Thread David Anderson
Inkscape fell short for my needs - and the size of my physical plan
layout was too large for it to handle - I would also love to see the
patched version of Xfig added to the repositories, but I still have
not seen anything that compares to it - maybe QCad - but really XFig
is better IMHO.

turned to inkscape since this bug prevent me to use my lovely xfig...)

[Bug 318812] Re: *** buffer overflow detected ***: xfig terminated

2009-05-21 Thread David Anderson
This was still happening in Ubuntu 9.10 when I did an upgrade. I
originally experienced it in 8.XX and got with the author who provided
me with a fix/patch that can be recompiled into Xfig and gets it
working. Is there any way to go about getting this patch into the deb
file so that it can be installed with apt-get rather than having to go
out side the package system and use a compile? (the compile is rather
complex for new users and I would hate to see Xfig go by way of the Dodo
since there is nothing even close to it for speed and functionality).
